    They did an episode on pirahnas on River Monsters, and I think the guy proved that they usually leave you alone unless you are a bloodied corpse (or close to it, like if you got a major injury). He even dived into a river known to have schools of them and swam in a pool that had a school of them swimming around about 10 feet away.

    I think that's just generally implied in the Amazon.
