Err... why is it Dobby and not Kreacher? I know Harry is Kreacher's master, and Kreacher played a much bigger role in HBP than Dobby. But you're right on the elf. I didn't notice it's right hand on Harry's shoulder or the top of its head and ears visible there.

As for the veil, I'm inclined to think otherwise. The US cover has large heavy curtains visible and some broken wood and rubble in front of Harry and Voldie. I'm not sure what they're both looking at and holding their hands towards, but I'm guessing that's our Deus Ex Machina to the miraculous Voldemort defeat, whatever it is. Though it does look like Voldemort is looking at Harry, while Harry is looking at the mysterious thing. I'm still half-way hoping JKR didn't drop a Deus there.

Because Dobby is a traitorous little bastard who's been spying on "the great Harry Potter Sir" all along?

Seriously, when it comes down to loyalty, who would you rather have knowing your deepest secrets? The elf who will only tell your family, or the elf who will run right to the guy you're trying to kill? You can disown family but a security break like Dobby just can't be plugged. It's like the old adage, "If she'll cheat with you, she'll cheat on you."

I am interested about the necklace or pendant that Harry is wearing in the first picture, as well as the sticks and stones located at the bottom of the screen. I think it's a good bet that they end up inside the veil at some point... and then the 'Power' is the love from his dead family including Sirius and Dumbledore. Lame? Yes. Probable? Yes.

The children's cover: Did anyone notice the fact that (assuming the castle on the back cover is Hogwarts) the moon is full? Also, I'm all most positive that the front cover is a scene where they look for R.A.B's locket in the Black vault. The arch in the back would be the front entrance, and the elf is not Dobby, but Kreacher instead, forced to help them find the locket. Still don't know why he would be holding a dagger though... unless he's trying to stab Harry in the back...

What about the random stag in the (large version of the) British kid's version... that's smiling.

Patronus love? Or just a red herring?

And lets not forget a picture of Hogwarts too. Or is that Hogwarts? And if it is, does that mean mroe dilly-dallying there?

I'm fairly certain it is Hogwarts - the Whomping Willow is directly in front of it. As for the Stag... you can't exactly take a higher meaning from it, since it's obviously got to be used against Dementors at some point. That doesn't really shed any new light on the story... unless his new and improved power-of-love-Stag eats Dementors--I hope that's not the case.

I was wondering about the snake in a bubble on the opposite cover under the JK Rowling Bio.

And is it just me, or was that the worst summary on a Harry Potter cover yet? I mean, we knew everything in the summary at the end of HBP. There is always a hint of things to come (example: Umbridge in OotP and Sirius in PoA) but in this one, there's nothing.

    Weak.

Maybe it is Creacher who wants to kill Harry with this cursed dagger Narcissa gave him?
Anyway, I think the cliched ride to Gringotts is going to happen with Harry and his staff browsing through Potter\Dumbledore vault... Weak....
Also, the hope for Indie!Harry doing a lone hunt is lost...

you know, maybe we are reading a bit too much into all this...
i remember all the speculation about the title of book 6 (which i shall not refer to in name), and pretty much all were wrong in the end...

i wasn't a member of DLP back then (did it even exist in some form?) but in the circles i talked to back then the odds were highly in favor of some kind of transfer student showing up.
Some few people assumed harry would suddenly be a prince, some guessed that it would be connected to voldemort.
I don't have records of that board anymore, but at a guess i'd say only about 5 out of 100 said snape (and were mocked badly by the others).

Anyway, to get back to the pictures, aside from the lack of wands i don't really see a common theme among the different versions.

I'm thinking something (maybe Fawkes) is holding their wands above their heads. In which case, Harry gets his wand back, AK's Voldie, and is awed by the disappearence of his scar.

I love that Salazar's locket is not Silver, but rather gold.

They said it was gold in the book. What I love is the sheer amount of fake-looking jewelry that adorns it's front. As I recall it was a simply an S wrought into the front, not a crappy looking compilation of plastic green rocks..

Yeah, to me it looked something like that.

Single wand in the air, both arms outstretched to grab it. Harry snatches it like a snitch, levels it at Voldemort and BAM, the end.

No... and BAM they both explode because neither can live while the other survives. Yeah bitches, I said it.

But that would make for some cool special effects, right?

Is nobody else frightened at the prospect of an ADULT version of the book? That, to me, implies that J.K. is gonna try her hand at writing porn. :puke:

Can you imagine that? It'd probably go like: "HarrY put his weinEr into giNNy's womanly viVacious perfect hole and they ExplOded into Love and Bunnies. The enD."

    :puke: :puke:

Please, Vash, if you see this, write a good smutfic to cure me of the mental image.

It is obvious what the American cover means, during the final battle Voldemort and Harry are going to apparate onto the stage of a Greek play. That is a chorus in front of the recycled backdrop from last month's rendition of Julius Caesar, clearly a low budget production. What they are looking at is the Gods' machine coming to take Harry away.

The summary of the adult version gives some sliver of hope.

"He must leave the warmth, safety, and companionship of The Burrow and follow without fear or hesitation the inexorable path laid out before him."

I don't believe it's that kind of adult, though I could be wrong. It's just a cover that makes it so adults don't have to be 'embarrassed' about reading the book out in the open or some such. (I think. I'm not sure, so if I'm wrong, don't kill me >.>)

I think OotP had an adult version as well, though I'm not sure about HBP.
