I'm thinking quite hard about starting up a Harry Potter/Exalted crossover.
It'll probably be a Harry/Luna (eventually at any rate) and will, for obvious reasons, divert completely from canon, to the point of name changes where necessary: Luna will almost certainly be called something else, and surnames will be changed a lot.
For those who've not encountered Exalted before, the Exalted wikipedia page should help.

As I see it, Voldemort will be an Abyssal, probably the Abyssal equivalent of either a Dawn or Twilight caste.
Bellatrix will probably be the Abyssal equivalent of a Night caste.
Other Death Eaters will be a mix of heroic (villainous) mortals and normal mortals, though depending on version, there may be a handful of corrupted Dragon-Blooded as well.
Dumbledore will be a Sidereal, his faction depending again on version.

The way I see it, there are two variants that could work.

    Variant 1: High-powered Harry
In this variant, Harry would be a Solar Exalted, leaving his parents at best heroic mortals. Most of the rest of the canon characters would be heroic mortals or dragon-blooded, leaving a nice tension between him and Ron, Hermione, Ginny, etc, for a nicely independent!Harry story. Dumbledore would either be a Bronze faction Sidereal working against Harry, or a Gold faction Sidereal helping him. Tonks will be a Lunar, just because it fits so well.
Harry will be able to match power with Voldemort in this version, given enough time.

    Variant 2: Low-powered Harry
This variant sees every character other than Voldemort, Bellatrix and Dumbledore at most a Dragon-Blooded, the weakest type of Exalt.
It means Harry will be no match for Voldemort one-on-one (even Dumbledore, as a Sidereal, falls short) and will force him to work with others to bring him down. It does still allow for rivalry, however, as Dragon-Bloods are notorious for tantrums, arguments and general carnage while getting away with it simply by virtue of being Dragon-Bloods.
It would make the history part fit better, although it would mean Sidereal would be non-an animagus, though v1 requires an animagus to be Lunar Exalted, and try as I might, I just can't picture Professor McGonagall with full-body tribal tattoos (a Lunar requirement).

Either version requires Voldemort to have made a conscious choice not to have attacked Harry, my way of getting around this is that Voldemort swore to leave Harry alive long enough for him to have children, just so he could kill then next generation of Potters as well (and maybe the few beyond that).
Horcruxes will be all but impossible to work into this story, but as they come from the Half-Baked Plot, :hbp I somehow doubt it'll worry too many people.

Anyway, I'd appreciate some help making the decision on version here. I'm leaning towards version 2, simply because there's a very nice scene with Harry and Luna discussing Crumple-Horned Snorkacks etc. and Luna telling Harry that she makes half of them up just to get Hermione to pretend she's heard of them, simply because Luna is more knowledgeable about Occult matters.

I know not a lot about Exalted, but from what you say, you sound as though your planning on transplating the Exalted Universe into the HP Universe. In my experience, this rarely works, and it is definitily easier for you to select a small number of characters from one fandom to transplant. Simply putting Exalted theology to work in the HP fandom would be very very difficult to manage correctly, and would almost undoubtably lead to you make mistakes with both fandoms as you get confused over different points.

And that is why a lot of crossovers blow. If you can't merge the two worlds decently, just don't even try in my opinion. Might as well just write an OC-centric story in that other world.

After reading that, i say your better off using AD&D. Exalted is a weak D&D rip off.

With a more diverse selection of Celestial, Infernal, and Abyssal creatures.

Edit: http://www.d20srd.org/ <-- lists most basic d20 creatures.

Defineatly sounds like a fusion in the making. Personally, Im not a big fan of fusions but as far as crossovers go just ask yourself one question.

How are these changes/Characters going to add to MY story? Does it add conflict? Does it cause MY character to grow in interesting ways?

And often the simplest smallest change that results in the biggest pay off later in the story is the best way to go.
