So there are some of us working on the story competition, and I wouldn't ask anyone to reveal whether or not you're submitting an entry; it would actually be better if you did not. Apart from that, though, who here is actively writing fanfiction and what are you writing? If you're not putting pen to paper today, do you have something that you're trying to write? Do you have something you want to write in the future?
I mainly ask because I've got nothing good to read right now, and I really want to see how involved DLP is.

 

I'm trying to work on that short story I posted to WbA, but no fanfiction at the moment.

 

Victoria Potter is my main project. Currently around 8k words into the next chapter, aiming to post it by Christmas.

I'm also working on an original story but progress is very slow. My desire not to abandon VP for original fiction means that the original story tends to fall to the bottom of the to do list.

I’ve been working on low hanging projects and commissions so not a lot of writing has been happening. It’s hard to maintain that sustained creativity. Sewing is just planning and execution. No creativity in the stitches I’m afraid.

I’m thinking of doing more next year. I’m out of touch in a lot of fandoms though so I’m not sure how that ramp up is going to go. Trends don’t dictate what I write but I’d be lying if I didn’t occasionally write because a trend is right up my alley.

I’m currently writing a big HP au where Hogwarts was and always has been in London in multiple parts. This led by butterfly to no statute of secrecy. I’ve got the 6.8k opening chapter. A snippet for the prologue, and some scenes from a few bits in the story.

I’ve got a comp entry to revise and probably one more to write to avoid stuffing the ballot, but feel I’ve done a good effort.

I had a worm story that reached 30k words, but I’ve lost interest in it to start working on HP at the end of November.

At least the comp entry will be posted one day. I doubt anything else will be if past form is any indicator.

 

New story called The Unravelled Seam, which is HP with a few elements stolen from the video game Death Stranding. Not necessary to have played the game to read the story, as at most all I'm pirating are concepts around death and souls from that game.

In the traditionally published original world, I just finished a final draft and have sent it off on submission for publication. I've started on the next one, sort of a Peter Pan meets Oliver Twist tale, anticipated to be about 90,000 words. I've a rough outline--like napkin notes--on a serial killer story set in northern Sydney, where the protagonist is blasted back in time six months with all his memories intact. He knows who's going to die, roughly when, including his brother, just not who the killer is... there's something there. My agent likes the idea.

In the self published world, I am thinking about flirting with Patreon for the next Reminiscent Exile, as well as a bunch of short stories set in that world, and complemented by an idea for a novel I had a few years ago about a protagonist that sees dead people/demons, but chooses to use that ability for selfish reasons. The more I think on that one, though, the more I feel like it would make a better web comic - Ghosthustlers. So I've been dusting off the old sketch pad and seeing if I can string something together.

It's taken me some time, but the gears are slowly starting to turn again--hope to catch some momentum soon.

 

I'm working on an original short story for a potential anthology with my writing group - a bit of a variation on the changeling trope.

 

I finally started actually doing something about one of my many ideas aside from collecting a ton of lose notes. I've sort on and off planned this one for three years by now, largely due to the fact that my overambitious worldbuilding plans led me to absurdly large list of hard to read books. I finally decided to screw it and use a combination of winging it and checking specific stuff as I go. So now I only need to finish some basic planning for the early part and I should be able to post a prologue and first chapter in WbA next week so it can be ripped to shreds.

The fic itself is pretty heavy AU (though I use a lot of stuff from canon and non-canon official works) both in terms of story and the universe. The main divergence story-wise is that there was one more person who fit the bill for Voldemort - Susan Bones. And since the Bones family was generally problematic for Voldemort (Susan's grandparents got personally killed by him, her uncles were in the Order and got killed by Death Eaters, Amelia would work for Ministry already) she got prioritised over the others. Her family is attacked almost a year earlier than Harry's would be so the war ends much earlier and the Wizarding World in 1991 is quite a different place than it was in canon. And so was Harry's childhood - resulting in him having a burning need to prove himself.

With some help, I'm looking to return to Emerald Mirror 3.0(bunch of AU Harry Potter's come together to fight a Dark!Harry and his Voldemort) over the next few months.

 

I have a few projects that I fiddle with depending on the day.

Eurotrip - Harry Potter and Dumbledore doing Indiana Jones type daring do about Europe, acquiring allies and artifacts.

Thus is Our Treaty Written - 31 year old Dumbledore PoV set in 1912. He's on the Titanic meeting with an informant who is giving him vital information about the rise of one Gellert Grindelwald and the people flocking to his banner.

Untitled actual shit HP/FD story that will likely be consigned to the dustbin of my Google docs.

Vampire contest entry that evolved into its own thing and promptly died. Might turn it into something original.

Scholomance!Hogwarts - Hogwarts is a much, much smaller institution with only 13 students per year. Houses actively recruit younger students, and are in a constant state of low level conflict with students stealing each other's secrets/spells/artifacts. Professors are supposed to be above the fray but interfere in favor of their former or chosen House. Lots of apprenticeship and familial training shenanigans. Takes a lot of inspiration from the Scholomance quest setting, mythical Scholomance, and a smattering of Wandering Inn's magic University.

One Here is Loyal To Me - When Harry is possessed by Voldemort in the atrium, he begs Dumbledore to end it. Dumbledore obliges in a moment of weakness, but Halloween of '81 repeats itself. As the Order prepares for the war against a resurgent and triumphant Voldemort, Harry begins his own quest to restore his lost headmaster. Dumbledore will only ever be gone when there are none left who are loyal to him.

Also two RWBY things. One oneshot and the other being a longer Jaune-PoV fic.

I'm always working on a bunch of stuff simultaneously.

re-editing It Takes Two to Tano here in the WBA. I wanted to pick it up again and found it rougher than I remembered. Some of it's decent though so it's kind of slow going because I'm not looking to just rewrite it all.

Working on two-ish, maybe three, Worm fics. First is my most recent story, "The Hero" which is kind of tongue and cheek, and is sort of based on the old cliche "every villain is a hero in their own tale" sort of thing. Second one is a fic that I've tentatively called "The Rogues Gallery" and focuses more on the indy!cape scene. Third one is a Tinker thing. I've tied to write one like 8 or 10 times. One of my attempts is over 30k words and I really hate to toss that many words away, so I might try and work on it again

 

1) NewGame+ : Gamer!Harry. Harry becomes aware he's inside of a game after the final battle with Voldemort, where obtaining the Elder Wand sends him off to Level 2 (of 5). Each level has an objective he must complete, and the Game claims he'll be released after he beats it. It's an action/adventure story where nothing is as it seems. I have most of it plotted out, and maybe 40-50k words, but I currently have a mental block on writing it for some reason.

2) Void : A dark, silly fusion between coffee shop AU and mafia stories. I don't have much of an outline, but it's fun to write. Harry is an orphan adopted by a mafia boss. He's meant to fix trouble, but always winds up causing more. May include a romantic subplot with Fleur because why not just add every meme.

3) Vampire competition entry : As someone who's cursed to never die, Dracula takes a terrible interest in the Master of Death.

4) Hp/Astoria entry : this one was for the most recent story competition. I polished off half of it within the week the prompt was finalized but couldn't be assed to finish it. Basically, Luna Lovegood ventures to the Amazon to secure a near-extinct magical beast for conservation. She's injured and sent to St. Mungo's for recovery. Her dear friend Harry is recruited to finish the task, but in the humid jungles he meets premier chef Astoria Greengrass, who's viciously determined to make a feast out of the very creature he seeks to protect.

I have some random original stuff too as well as many false starts of other fics, but if I wrote them all out this list would reach my toes.

 

The first thing is the Desert of Ka'tan

A cataclysmic event ended a space faring empire thousands of years ago, the upper class had all died off due to inbreeding, plague, or war.

In the remnants of titanic monuments to the arrogance of man, civilization begins to flourish as the the left over slaves live their lives again. Time skip a thousand years, a man wakes up on a dusty wooden dock, looking at a small town, behind it, a vast dune sea with a single skeletal building reaching to the heavens.

Basically, a strange man awakes in a strange place, and must brave the perilous Desert of Ka'tan to get to the north side of the island to return home.

An odd little HP thing, I've taken to calling Sundered Heart, Harry is the bastard son of the Sorcerer Lord James Potter, his father in an effort to remove his bastard from his household and afford him a future sends him to the continent where he finds work as a guard for in Marismollises, the castle city of Baron Delacour.

Harry stifles under the harsh guard captain Rufus Scrimgeour, his guards being quick to kill, and unyielding in matters of justice, leaving little room for humanity.

He meets Alastor Moody after taking a petty crook who had tried to rob him, Moody is a delver. A man who was once the Guard Captain but was forced into retirement during the Purge. Basically Dumbledore was being too kind to the children of a rebellious second son of the old King. This meant the new King was heavily against Dumbledore, and pressured a member of Dumbeldores faction into revealing all his agents, and they were all killed. Delacour was a kinder man and just made Moody an Exile, free to enter the city, but he could not have any property or live there. So he became a delver, men and women who return to the Heart of the Sundering, the site of a great explosion, or plague, or something. No one is sure what happens but what remains there is the wreck of a great city, and its full of treasure. But it is not without peril. Magical creatures of all make are drawn to it for some reason. And not to discount the Husks, the remains of the people who once leaved there, doomed to walk the Earth until the end of time.

Harry leaves the guards and apprentices under Moody. I got a lot more notes but from here its mostly spoiler-y

 

Main focus is a quest I'm running but do I have a Harry Potter side project. Current title is Star Atlas Codex and its an alternate 5th year where winning the Triwziard Tournament unknowingly qualified Harry for second tournament, which he visits during his dreams each night. First contest is DOTA with magical golems. Second is a sort of gladiatorial fight but rather than fight yourself, you have a few hours to enhance a homunculus champion with spells, positions, training etc.

 

Current main project is my master's thesis , Sherlock Holmes and the Adventure of the Velvet Room. I've stalled out for a bit at the moment, and while I could continue writing I'm gonna wait for the Inqs to drop their reviews. Seems more efficient, that way. ~70k so far.

Side projects:
Theoretical CS for Dummies By Dummies, a thread about learning theoretical computer science stuff. Gonna try and update it weekly.

Othersider, which is original: half Accel World, half LitRPG, with a lot of grime and blood and murder on top. Mostly started this because of /tg/'s Joker Quest, and also as an excuse to practice writing action scenes, even if I'm not particularly good at them so far. ~5k so far.

And Nothing But The Truth, a HP story where Harry meets Dumbledore instead of McGonagall, is more curious about the world as a result, and gets sorted into Ravenclaw. Would skip to 5th Year, because we've all read dozens of canon retreads anyway. It'd also feature Luna in an antagonistic role, because Harry's experimenting with magic and she's seen what that can do. That'd turn romantic eventually, obviously. Currently only an outline.

GaRome, not a story but a plan for a quest. Based on the live-action series Garo, but set in Rome. You're Maximus Varus Aquilinas, the Golden Knight. The last Knight assigned to guard Rome against its many, many Horrors has fallen; it's your task to meet with the current Emperor and become the new last line of defense against otherworldly monsters. Good luck. Just an outline and half a system.

Practical Heroism 101, a Fate/Zero story where sane Heracles gets summoned instead of Gilgamesh. Shit dovetails from here - I'd need to adjust the other groups by necessity because holy fuck Herc is a Big Deal. Wrote a single snippet, which is only 500 or so words, and put it aside for something else.

Fate/Hostile Takeover, which would be another innovative crossover and my way of living up to Rep's motto: find an empty fandom and make it your bitch forevermore. A Fate x Kengan Ashura crossover, where Yamashita Kazuo is recruited as a Master for Nogi Group, because Tokyo's Fifth Holy Grail Annihilation Tournament is about to begin. Only an idea at the moment but I'm idly working on an intro snippet.
