i'm looking for stories with the basic premise "history is written by the victor" or the 'dark side' is just misunderstood and that revolution always comes with a price, etc... basically where death eaters are not as bad as they are portrayed and the light side is guilty of just as many atrocities. Harry doesn't want to be forced down the path chosen for him and wants to make his own decisions on "pureblood tradition" Dumbledore is most likely manipulative or at least a master of propaganda.

basically a sympathetic 'dark' harry with the dark side being toned down, no senseless and random killing and everything is done for a purpose.

stuff like this, (Harry is ignorant of old wizarding traditions,, blurred lines of light and dark... )

stuff like this too is ok (harry takes dark mark to get closer to V)

    ^ my eyes bleed.

You guys could at least try to make your writing not look like... something unpleasant.

Traitorous. You'll probably like it. Most people here in DLP do, though I never really found the story to be very engaging.

i got about 200k words through this story awhile back. i could have finished it if it wasn't for slash, but slash sucks and ruined a decent story, enough said.

i also got about half way through traitorous last summer, but i lost interest about halfway through if i remember. i might give it another whirl, i don't remember to much about it.

Since you mentioned slash ruined The Black Heir for you, you might not like this one, the slash is light but present. Also many characterizations leaves much to wish for. Still, in my opinion it's one of the more interesting portrayals of a dark society in the HPverse.

It's a bitch that most stories focusing on exploring the 'dark side' turns out to be slash.

I've read this one before and it is one of the better one shots I have read. Just as good on the second read through too.

The Black Heir/sequel is one of the few fics in which I tolerate the slash in order to get the story. I got initially suckered in and now I kinda want to know where everything is going and how it all ends.

I tried to read the Black Heir a long time ago, despite my overwhelming hatred of romances. It was bad enough that it was slash, but in the end it wasn't the squick value of the Voldemort/Harry that made me hate it - it was the constant, overbearing stress of the whole thing. There were no breaks to the things going wrong in that story. It was overbearing drama.

I think Out of the Night, mentioned previously, is pretty much the epitome of what you've been asking for, though. It's the only one of the 'the evil guys are actually the good guys' genre that I've been able to tolerate, really.

"Out of the night" is great, even though I have not finished it yet (c19 as I write this). It falls well within the kind of stuff I am looking for, and it is a very good read. I am undecided if I like it more than the story that got me looking for these kinds of stories, "On the Wings of a Phoenix," but I think I do because Harry is actually learning stuff in this fic and is not a huge pussy.

The one thing I am unsure of with this fic is that it doesn't seem to have too much of a plot yet (which is fine with me) as compared to "OtWoaP" where there was DE and OotP scenes, but then again, I have not gotten through all the posted chapters yet to make a complete review.

You are right in that this has nearly everything I am looking for. The biggest thing I am looking for with these kinds of stories is that being Dark is more about history and tradition rather than ministry defined magics and terrorism.

Anyways, I thank the two of you for recommending this because it is a great fic.

I just finished the written chapters of "Out of the Night" and ill just reiterate with my last post that I enjoyed it a lot.

It is definitely the kind of story that I am looking for, and if anyone else knows of similar type stories, please let me know.

I just read through "Traitorous." I must admit I was wrong when I said I tried to read it before, I simply got it confused with the fic "The Traitors"

It was a decent read, It wasn't quite what I am looking for, it looks like Harry want's to rule the world for himself and take out Voldemort. I suppose stories like this is why this site is named Dark Lord Potter, but I am not really looking for fics where he takes over.

This story did have a lot of stuff I like though, such as people questioning Dumbledore's motives and the like, but in the end nothing came from it (other than Harry converting during the beginning) and AD was killed anyways.

In the end I suppose my flavor of the moment is looking for stories that are based on dark wizarding tradition, history, and facts that the Ministry/Dumbledore is trying to cover up... essentially more stories like "out in the night" and "on the wings of a phoenix". I suppose I just like immersive stories and the mystique of misunderstood 'dark' magic.
