    Hmm, gotta say Roku = Dumbledore on this one. That way, the parallel of Dumbledore living on vicariously through Harry can still exist in the fact that Aang is really just a new incarnation of Roku dealing with the repercussions of what Roku referred to as his own mistakes.

    Technically, Grindelwald would be more like Morgoth than Saruman. Actually, it would make more sense for it to be
    Grinelwald - Sauron
    Voldemort - Saruman

    But I must give you credit for
    Greyback - Grond
    Hagrid - Beorn
    Aberforth - Radagast
    Rosmerta - Rosie

    Those were excellent :D

    All jokes aside, Naruto is very similar to HP, almost to the point that I'm suspecting Kishimoto of bad deeds.

    Orphan kid, growing around mean people, his parents sacrificed themselves so he could live, he has an unusual power/ability, there's a Prophecy about him, he has some sort of evil entity sealed in him.

    This orphan kid is very famous for something he hasn't actually done.

    The orphan kid eventually joins a team of three with another boy and a book-smart girl.

    There's an old wise man involved too.

    There's also a powerful evil snake guy who is obsessed with immortality.

    To be fair, orphan with mysterious and tragic background is practically a cliché, as is old wise man, prophecy, sealed evil and unusual protagonist power.

    Come off it. Grindelwald is clearly Morgoth/Melkor. The Bigger Bad who is now pretty much vanquished.

    But on another note, here's some near-blasphemy (Alexandra Quick):

    Alexandra: Ron (impulsive, hot-tempered)
    Anna: Hermione (studies hard)
    Constance & Forbearance: kinda sorta Parvati and Padma? Ish? (because twins)
    Innocence: Colin (hero-worship, annoying)
    David: Ron also? Maybe Fred/George?
    Lilith Grimm: Amelia Bones???
    Mr. Grue: obviously Snape (potions/alchemy, asshole)
    Hucksteen: Fudge/Voldemort in one
    Livia Pruett: Remus Lupin?

    Old Kingdom:
    Lirael: Harry and Hermione in one
    Sameth: Ron or Neville
    Touchstone: Oliver Wood
    Sabriel: Ginny
    Clariel: Grindelwald, in a way
    Terciel: Dumbledore?

    Since I'm into the Star Wars hype:

    Harry = Luke
    (Orphan hero with prophecy who's life is completely changed after they discover their true potential.)

    Harry & Ron & Hermione = Luke & Han & Leia
    (The "Golden Trio." Hero and Second character save the third character, which forms a bond between the three. Second and third character banter throughout the series, while the hero often acts as the mediator. The two characters end up together.)

    Owen & Beru = Vernon & Petunia
    (Uncle and Aunt who took in the hero in a time of need. Both knew the truth of the hero's potential and
    parents, yet refused to reveal it to him.)

    Voldemort = Darth Sidious
    (Evil villain of the dark side.)

    Dumbledore = Obiwan Kenobi
    (Old, wise guardian/mentor to the hero. Both knew the complete truth about the hero, but did not reveal it until the hero met him in force-ghost/limbo form.)

    Not just characters:

    Hogwarts = Jedi Temple
    (Where young children go to learn magic/the force to later become a witch/jedi.)
    Magic = Force
    Ghosts = Force Ghosts

    Dumbledore is so obviously Yoda that I can't even. Lemon drops are the HP equivalent of Yodaspeak.

    Hmm... well, what comes to mind is Percy Jackson

    Percy = Harry (the black-haired, green-eyed hero with a prophecy and the job of saving the world)
    Annabeth = Hermione (the intelligent girl of the trio who most definitely likes her books)
    Grover = Ron (the hero's best friend who faces his fears throughout the series while assisting the saving of the world)

    Agreed. In the original trilogy, the OSV syntax is not even all that prevalent, compared to merely archaic diction.

    The Tale of Jiraiya the Gallant is actually a Japanese folk-tale. The Toad guy, the Slug magician, and the Snake warrior with the same names as those in the manga. It's quite an entertaining read, if you can find a translation. It's quite nicely blended into the manga, and I would tip my hat off to Kishimoto for being able to so seamlessly blend the characters into a modern-day adaptation which stays quite true to the original's roots, while being very original in of itself.

    I would argue that Sarutobi is more like Dumbledore than Jiraiya, particularly taken into account the comparatively little development that Kishimoto had done at the time of his death.

    1) Physically, he was older than Jiraiya. He was actually elderly, like Dumbledore, not just getting up in years. He also had white hair, and some facial hair. Though Jiraiya shares hair length with Dumbledore.
    2) Sarutobi, even now, with the further development since his death, was much more powerful than Jiraiya, when you take into account that he was starting to lose some function with age. In the time frame of his death, he was probably the second most powerful man in the series, ignoring his age. When he died, Kishimoto had not yet created the Shodaime and Nidaime Hokage as the absolute beasts that we now know them to be. At the time, Minato was the greatest Hokage, but Sarutobi was undoubtably the second most powerful. In the real world, Sarutobi was the first to be called The Kami no Shinobi, not Hashirama.
    3) While both Jiraiya and Sarutobi were killed battling a student that had gone bad, similar to Dumbledore, I think Sarutobi has the advantage in this. Jiraiya had had no idea Nagato was going to become bad, he didn't even consider it until they met again. Sarutobi, on the other hand, did know that Orochimaru was going bad and was derelict in his duty to protect the world from him, like Dumbledore was with Voldemort.
    4) In relation to their evil students, Orochimaru and Voldemort both sought immortality and ultimate power through extensive learning. They also both sought to conquer. Nagato just had a powerful kekkai genkai and believed himself a god, he didn't care for immortality and already believed himself the ultimate power and hadn't made any strides to improve beyond the Rinnegan. Nagato also had no interest in conquering anything. He just wanted to spread pain to force peace. Neither Voldemort or Orochimaru wanted peace.
    5) Sarutobi's death also marked a change in tone. His was the first true time of personal loss for Naruto and marked the beginning of his true strides towards power. The first introduction of Akatsuki also came after Sarutobi's death.
