They needed to get over the overlength time marker, so they could charge more entrance fee.

All the spoilers about the differences between the book and film are below, and some of them seem good, and some seem, uh... not so good.

    * Mr. Ollivander appears to be familiar with the Deathly Hallows, while in the book, he doesn't understand what the term means.
    * When Griphook is killed by Voldemort, the Sword of Gryffindor disappears from his hands.
    * Aberforth Dumbledore doesn't explain his brother's backstory.
    * When arriving at Hogwarts, Harry bursts into the Great Hall furious at Snape for standing in Dumbledore's place, even demanding that Snape tell everyone how he killed Dumbledore.
    * Professor McGonagall duels Snape in the Great Hall in front of the entire school before he turns to black "smoke", smashing through a window.
    * The protective shield the Professors place around the school disintegrates anything that attempt to run through it. During the beginning of the Battle of Hogwarts, it instantly kills 17 Death Eaters.
    * During the start of the battle, Harry and Ginny kiss, the directors placed this in to show their relationship and love for each other. (No!!!)
    * When Voldemort destroys the shield around Hogwarts, the Elder Wand cracks a bit by the amount of power used.
    * Both Bellatrix and Snape create the largest Dark Mark over Hogwarts the Wizarding World has ever seen.
    * Harry, through his connection to Voldemort, sees a memory of the Grey Lady at Hogwarts, making Harry realise that Ravenclaw is connected to one of Voldemort's Horcruxes.
    * Harry goes to Ravenclaw Tower alone and does not encounter the Carrows in the common room. Amycus does not spit in McGonagall's face. >.>
    * A scene is added in Hogwarts where Ron and Hermione enter the Chamber of Secrets to acquire a Basilisk's fang to destroy Hufflepuff's cup.
    * Ron and Hermione are nearly killed in the Chamber of Secrets when they are attacked by a tsumani created by Voldemort, as their "lives flashing before their eyes" they lean and kiss each other.
    * A scene where Ron and Hermione are chased by Nagini is added probably after the Chamber of Secrets scene.
    * Some changes made for the Half-Blood Prince film, such as the circumstances of Harry hiding the potions textbook, may also result in some additions.
    * Vincent Crabbe doesn't appear in the film due to the drug charges against actor Jamie Waylett and Gregory Goyle will die in his place.
    * Blaise Zabini is present in the Room of Requirement with Draco and Draco, Gregory Goyle (instead of Crabbe) and Blaise Zabini are about to enter the Room of Requirement.
Goyle as a replacement for Crabbe. He will likely play the same role Goyle does in the book, as it has been stated Goyle will take Crabbe's role.
    * Fred duels a Death Eater during the battle, and then gets disarmed, and cornered by many other Death Eaters. This is likely what leads to his death.
    * Aberforth fends off hundreds of Dementors during the Battle of Hogwarts with a tidal wave patronus.
    * Lavender Brown is killed during the Battle by Fenrir Greyback.
    * Nigel Wespurt is killed during the Battle, and Neville carries his body into the Great Hall. Clearly this is a substitute for Colin Creevey, as he has been since the fourth film.
    * The scene where McGonagall leads desks to battle is omitted from the film.
    * Death Eaters burn down the Hogwarts Quidditch pitch.
    * Buckbeak, centaurs and house-elves don't appear during the Battle.
    * The final battle between Harry and Voldemort will be extended, and while other parts of the second phase of the Battle of Hogwarts will be shown, the primary focus will be centered on Harry and Voldemort.
    * Once Harry reveals himself, Voldemort locks Harry up asking how he escaped death, after Harry tells him Voldemort lets him out. This causes their chase around many different places in Hogwarts.
    * Nagini is not in a protective sphere.
    * Voldemort slashes Snape's throat open with the Elder Wand using Sectumsempra, before ordering Nagini to "finish him". Nagini's attack is not seen, but Snape's screams are heard and the windows of the Crystal House are splattered with his blood as Harry, Ron and Hermione watch on in horror.
    * Voldemort attacks the Great Hall from the Boathouse, causing it to burn and collapse.
    * Scabior duels Neville on the Covered Bridge, and is killed when half of the bridge collapses.Snape in front of Godric's Hollow.
    * A scene is added in Snape's flashback where he comes to Godric's Hollow, after Lily and James were killed in 1981, to see them dead even collapsing when seeing Lily dead, he cradles her in his arms then sees Harry sitting in his crib watching on.
    * Harry tells Ron and Hermione that he is a Horcrux, and that he must die. Hermione tells him that she suspected so all along.
    * Instead of Harry being naked when arriving at King's Cross he is instead fully clothed, he also sees Voldemort in the image of a red, slimy breathing thing.
    * Hagrid does not place Harry's dead "corpse" on the ground, he instead leaps out of Hagrid's arms ready to fight, while Narcissa Malfoy was looking for signs of life but finding none until Harry leaps out of Hagrid's arms.
Harry and Voldemort falling during Battle of Hogwarts.
    * Harry grabs Voldemort and throws them both off of the roof of the castle, they nearly reach the bottom when Voldemort apparates them both away.
    * Ginny will see Harry and Voldemort falling off the cliff.
    * Molly kills Bellatrix with the Avada Kedavra Curse. (wtf?)
    * Harry and Voldemort duel at the Entrance Courtyard instead of the Great Hall.
    * After being struck with the Killing Curse, Voldemort turns to ash, and crumbles apart in a similar manner to Quirrell in Philosopher's Stone.Harry and Voldemort's final duel at the Entrance Courtyard instead of the Great Hall.
    * After the conclusion of the battle. Harry, Ron and Hermione stand on the remains of the Covered Bridge discussing the events of the past year. Harry snaps the Elder Wand in two and throws it over the side.

Apparently the filmmakers intended to put Pettigrew in Part 2, but decided not to, as David Yates has announced that he will not be appearing. This has led to the belief of the possibility that Dobby killed him despite their initial intents to have him merely stunned, or that Voldemort kills him after he returns to Malfoy Manor.

It can't. It literally can't be worse than the books.
    (within reason, of course)

Harry physically grabs hold of Voldemort and jumps off a building.

He tries to take down Voldemort physically, not magically.

He does so by jumping off a building, when Voldemort can fly and he can't.

Jesus. I thought that was some kind of metaphorical mindscape crap. But no. Apparently they actually do it. And Voldemort re-captures Harry and locks him up after Harry's resurrection, and doesn't kill him? WTF.

Um, okay. Perhaps my statement was a little hasty.

On the other hand, are we sure Voldemort can fly in the films? It wouldn't be the first time they change important stuff.

    EDIT: @Celestin:
Stronger visual impact, I suppose. Also, in the books Harry tells Ron and Hermione what he plans to do with the Elder Wand, but we're not shown the actual moment. To avoid an extra scene, they make him just snap it right there.

These little, seemingly unimportant changes in movies always confuse me. I wonder what is the reason of this change?

I think it's to cut the ten minute scene with Albus's portrait to be honest. And to have a short "ending" before the epilogue, and if Harry dosen't use names when addressing the kids I will like it all the more.

The thing I'm most upset about- is Molly using the AK, since it's said loads of times how you have to mean them and rage isn't enough, plus the fact Moody said it would probably only give him a nose bleed if one of them casted it.

I'll seriously be lol'ing hard when that epilogue scene comes. I don't care what they say about the make-up and the special effects, watching Dan, Emma and Rupert '19 years later' is gonna be hilarious.

My thoughts exactly. I had high hopes that somehow the movie might make lemonade of the shitty lemons we were given by the canon ending, but no. It's as if they lost a bet and the pay-out is, "make this as nonsensical as you can, except differently nonsensical to the book, mkay?"

The "you have to mean it" was only ever mentioned about the Cruciatus, and even then by Bellatrix. In a stupid turn, Harry is somehow able to cast that curse on one of the Carrows in a fit of pique over him spitting in McGonnagal's face. So what we're lead to believe is that anger and pain and anguish over your dead godfather is not good enough motivation to torture said godfather's killer. On the other hand, having a tough ol' teacher insulted and spit on is quite good enough. What. The. Fuck.

Oh, and it's pretty obvious from the book that Molly does in fact cast the Killing Curse on Bellatrix. I mean, how many green spells are there that kill instantly?

Oh, and the past tense of "cast" is still "cast", for fuck's sake.

I've been cringing about that since I saw the first stills of it. They're supposed to be about 37-38 years old, and Harry looks older than Mr. Weasley. Aren't wizards supposed to live LONGER than regular people? Christ, I said even then that Harry and Ginny looked like a grandpa and his crack-whore, meth-addict granddaughter.

I think you misinterpreted that scene. I was personally under the impression that, as two years had passed since his first attempt, he had a lot more anger and hate built up and by this point was fully willing to make any Death Eater suffer like hell.

I thought it meant from this:

"I see what Bellatrix meant," said Harry, the blood thundering through his brain, "you need to really mean it."

-that he didn't understand how to properly cast them until Bellatrix gave him the tips.

In the book Harry actually says that he is going to return the wand to Dumbledore's tomb, which is pretty stupid.

All in all however, the edit's seem reasonable, if a bit pointless.

What she really says is that "righteous anger" won't do it. Which is perfectly understandable, and yet the Why The Fuck is McG being spit on and called a cow good enough? It's not, and that's what I'm talking about.

Besides, if Harry wasn't in possession of enough hate and anger after his fifth year, why in hell would he be more full of it in DH, long before he finds out about being a Horcrux, etc?

It's just asinine, is all I'm saying.

Harry tried the wrong Unforgivable against Bellatrix, IMO. To use the Cruciatus properly you've got to "mean it" - which I take to mean that you have to want to inflict extreme, tortuous pain. That clearly wasn't what Harry wanted then, but maybe "righteous anger" is better for powering the Killing curse.

With the Carrows, I like to imagine that it was about more than just the spitting incident. By that point, Harry was quite aware of what type of person the Carrows were, from the scene on the Astronomy tower in HBP, and also from the knowledge that the Carrows were beating and torturing Harry's Hogwarts friends.

Add all that up, and it becomes easier to suppose that the Carrows are people who Harry would want to experience agonizing pain. In that case, the spitting on McGonagall was just the catalyst. Also, it goes without saying that if Harry could successfully cast the Cruciatus on the Carrows, he could have cast it on Bellatrix in DH as well.

You know, I wish I could fucking believe that.

Except this is David Yates, the direction with the emotional directing range of an eggcup. I have never been moved by a single dramatic scene in his movie. Sure, he can occasionally block a nice composite shot, frame the special effects in a manner that might look pretty for a moment, but ask him to write a scene with human drama and he consistently FAILS.

Frankly, as a director, he's a disappointment. Every change he's made to the HP series in terms of 'pacing' or 'drama' has failed for me, and I genuinely try to get invested in these movies when I watch them. From a technical standpoint, the editing gets worse as you progress into every film, so much so that I could have blocked a better shot in the Malfoy Manor scenes in DH Part 1. And the lighting in all of his movies... god, it's just BAD. I don't know what contrast setting or filters he's has used in the movies, but they don't work for me at all - it makes the films feel sloppy and very plastic, very unreal to me. It just fails on so many levels.

And really, the fact that the acting in some of these movies has been as poor or haphazard as it has been can be partially blamed on him as well. Sure, you can only do so much with Emma Watson, but the best directors can get great performances out of anybody (look at the Lord of the Rings movies for proof of that).

And you wanna know the worst part? I look at Yates' movies and I see tons of utterly wasted potential. Even just in the little details of set design, I find myself disappointed. Or the fact that Yates has some great dramatic actors like Alan Rickman and can't use them for shit. Or that he tries to insert rewritten scenes to aid the pacing of the film and only end up fucking the mythology in the ass or depriving the audience of scenes that are actually poignant and have some fucking value! Or when he has the opportunity to make good changes where Rowling fucked up, he doesn't even fucking take them! I'll place money on him not putting Tonks' and Lupin's death in this movie, or cutting away from any scene that might actually have a visceral edge because he wants to make it 'friendly' - fuck that. DH could have been dark and morbid if directed properly, and it still would have made shitloads of money because it's HARRY FUCKING POTTER! But no, we're going to get some PG shitstain of a movie that's not worth the digital memory it's printed on.

So yeah, these changes only depress me more. I have no expectations for this movie whatsoever. Fuck Yates and the couch he rode in on.
