FI saw it on CS first, didn't understand it much then.( back when 1.3 was out ) Now I just attribute it to elitism of exp. internet people v. n00bs.

I'm used to it, I used to play games alot.

Besides, his isn't that bad, there's people that type sentences full of 1337. >_> Now that's annoying.

*snorts* that would be seriously annoying. It would be funny to make up your own code, and mock them while they attempt to figure it out.

Ahh... so you're an amatuer hacker? Also known as a script kiddie? Interesting.

IIRC '1337' speak was an ourgrowth of AOL and their attempts to filter content. Its part of what gave us 'pr0n' and 'teh' and basically devolved from there. Correct me if I'm wrong someone. I think I've got it righ but I maybe connecting two seperate trends here.

Err... you're a little bit wrong.

It actually started way back before the Internet and world wide web was a big deal. The old old school 300 baud modems and bulletin boards young hacker types chatted etc at (private dial-up Bulletin Boards). Literally the speed at which talking and sharing data/text would be such a snail's pace compared to today. They used common abbreviations and shortened things like "U R gay". It was the chat rooms and then IRC channels where it primarily spread and mutated. Cliques and all the usual junior high things where you talk in old languages or cryptic ways only others who 'got it too' did. And I think the term for 'leet' came from old arse BBS games where the 'elite' was the highest levels and masters of the game.

But this was all way before cybernannies and AOL content filters. Think the movie "War Games" where he places the phone headset onto his giant expensive modem box.

Ah... But i still don't see the practical use of 'leetness'..

My Dark secret? I don't mind reading H/Hr.

If Harry/Draco is sexual tension why not Harry/Snape :)

    Or Harry/Crabbe/Goyle

    Or Harry/Umbridge

Have you tried using a chat client on a 486 or under with a 14k modem? Try it sometime...you'll understand. I put together an old box for my sister who was going to college that was an all in one AST machine with a 14kb ISA card that I found... I tried testing it under Win3.x with Calmira II and one of the earlier versions of AOL Instant Messenger and it was hell.

If you're literally getting a character a second or two--not words but characters... ANYTHING that speeds getting the message across is good. See if yolu know anyone who is Deaf or Hard-of-Hearing and has a TTY that might give you some idea.

nonjon reminded me of how it was. I'd forgotten about BBS boards when I made my post before..

As for my deep dark secret? I'm an omnivore when it comes to words. More likely or not I've read it and will continu reading it unless my intelligence is streched or insulted beyond tolerance. I've read slash and not immediately recoiled. I usually skim over the slashy parts, but I still read it. I've read Ginny stories and enjoyed them. I read everything.

    I'm like a word-slut or something LOL...

I used to be the same. Everything that was somewhat interesting and could use puncuation well enough to understand where one sentance began and ended was read desperatly to feed my addiction. It was like buying questionable drugs to get a "fix".

Eventually, though, I realized all it was doing was tearing my mind apart, and everytime I refrained from cursing out some illiterate slob putting words together in the most unappealing ways that I was slowly killing myself.

Today, I still suffer the mental scars, but for my own safety I restrict my reading policies to "Anything that is interesting and can use a spell/grammar check. Cliches are to be handled with a critical mind, and romance will be avoided if it is fluff based." This site has helped greatly on getting my life back on track.

I'm slightly more than I was when I first started reading but not by much anymore. And as for scars? I know exactly what you mean. I always seem to freak out my relatives and co-workers at my high tolerance level for 'tasteless' and 'disgusting' subjects. I don't know HOW to explain to them why it just doesn't faze me...

The fun part is imagining how to explain these things to people who have never seen them and then explain that you weren't looking for them....

*laughs* Oh, I know. People don't bother to ask anymore. Actually, they don't willingly socialize with me either... wonder why? Never fails to amuse, though.
