How does this make sense? It seems to me that fearing a dementor would make you afraid of having your soul sucked out, or perhaps a fear of despair, or your past. Having a boggart as your boggart would make you afraid of fear.

There is a thread already centered around logical errors in HP not to mention the fact that I already brought up this point in another thread because I didn't know about the logical errors thread.

Well... As three different people brought it up in three different threads, I think we can safely say that the 'boggart turning into a dementor thing' does not mean that you have a fear of fear...

Well, a dementor leaves you with your worst memories, which I guess usually involve quite a bit of fear, and I had always thought their presence, by default instilled fear, along with sucking out happy thoughts.

Or Remus just told the 13-year-old child with issues that to stop him going emo over how he fares worse against dementors than the 11-year-old new students who have never cast a spell in their lives.

I always thought that what the dementor makes you feel (cold and like you'll never be happy again... yadda yadda) is actually what you would feel if you were scared out of your mind.

Therefore, what the dementor would make you feel is fear at it's worst, and if your Boggart was a dementor, your worst fear would be fear. Of course, I may have just tried to rationalize it the best way that I could when I had read the third book.

I don't think that his worst fear would be getting his soul sucked out, because that is like your worst fear being poison or something, it just isn't a death you think about constantly unless you are in a certain situation.(I gather that there wasn't to many people getting there soul sucked out by accident until Voldemort came along.)

Well, he sees his parents die when he is by a dementor. I would say there are several ways to interpret this scene. He could be afraid of being helpless to protect those he loves, he fears the past, or he is afraid of never having a family. Since a boggart shows your worst fear it would then have not worried about the dementor if one of these were the case though it would have just shown him that scene. I'd say the most likely outcome is that he fears dementors because of the feeling that they give him. He feels cold and he sees the memory of his parents death which tends to lean towards the thought that Harry fears being alone. That is what the feelings coupled with the memory seem to indicate to me, and the dementor makes people feel like that at least that is what I thought of when I read this post.

I always thought that Lupin said that, because Harry said he thought of Voldemort at first but then the dementors came to his mind as well. The point being that Harry does not have any fixed fear but he fears those things that can instill fear in others.

I was under the impression that having a dementor boggart mean your greatest fear was a panic attack.

Thats going out on a limb, don't you think? A Dementor is something concrete in the story. They're used to represent fear. Harrys' fear isn't shifting in any form.

He thought of Voldemort, sure, but he didn't fear him. Rather, he felt the fear that was attributed to his mothers screaming. He heard her, couldn't do anything to stop it, and therefore the dementors represented a unstopable force that can only be counteracted by something of opposite value. Hence, the Patronus Charm.

Lupin said it himself: Wise choice Harry, the only thing you fear, is fear itself.

    Something along those lines.

Say what? An attempt at humor, or just jibberish?

Dementors are supossed to feed on the Happy memories right? Then how does that equal fear? If you fear a Dementor you fear a Dementor not fear itself. And dont say because the Dementors cause fear, they cause depression.

How is fearing fear wise? In most other fiction where the hero has to overcome insurmountable odds, fearing fear itself is seen as a big sign of weak will and lack of power.
