Checking out HBP right now, since you all say it's one of the stronger movies (though granted one of the weakest books).

All of the Dumbledore/Harry interaction at the start seems very, very stilted. I feel like I'm watching people who've never acted before in their lives. I had to take a quick break for some foods and decided to start a post.

Dude playing Snape is pretty good though. Though so much in these movies, all of them, feels strange. Like how Narcissa and Bella just pop up into his place and he's just chillin' reading the paper. It's not that the idea of it is odd, just the scene itself doesn't seem fluid.

Anyway, onwards to more movie. At least it does seem to be following the book so far.

I'll probably pop off to see DH tomorrow or this weekend.

    How is it?

Woke early by random chance today, decided to pop along and see one of the early showings at the cinema. Was quite good. Enjoyed it for the most part, some bits were silly and stilted but others were done really well.

And once again Rupert Grint proved to be the best out of the three at acting.

My sister called me and bragged about seeing it. Said it was good.

I might just have to see it...for free of course. I didn't pay to see the Half-Baked Plot, either.

I watched it yesterday. I thoroughly enjoyed it, and like Mordecai said, Rupert Grint's acting was very entertaining to watch.

EDIT: Did you get free movie tickets with your costumes? Cinemas here gave free seats to those who came wearing 'good' costumes.

Actually we had to go three days after the actual premiere so they might have been giving freebies then but we didn't get em that day.

The best thing about coming three days afterwards is the fact we were the only people dressed up.

This may seem like a con but really it's a massive pro. We made sure to split up at the food court and we each bought our dinner at a different place so as to troll as much as possible.

We also got a video of Bellatrix Lestrange and Harry Potter having a dance battle on the Dance Dance Revolution game in the arcade. Surreal, man, surreal.

I thought it was pretty spectacular. I especially loved the animation for "The Tale of the Three Brothers". (Anyone else think Death looked like General Grievous, by the way?)

Grint's acting was good, but I personally thought Watson did better overall. She did really well in the torture scene, imo.

Also, after seeing Harry kiss Ginny (UGH), I was completely amenable to a H/Hr relationship. It easily could have gone in that direction in a better alternate universe (side note: I thought the dance scene was mildly endearing).

    So yeah. Pretty good stuff.

Torture scene? She was squealing, that was it.

I thought Ginny bending down and tying Harry's shoes in Half Blood Prince was horrible, but the latest was even worse. Thank God for George.

The dancing thing was very inspired. The goofiness really worked.

I honestly enjoyed it. Even the firefights were okay - though it wouldn't have killed them to take on a real fight choreographer. There's just something about their wand-waving when in a fight that seems awkward...I think the directors just let the actors have at it, I dunno.

It annoys me that best example of graceful and aggressive spellcasting came from Tom Felton, when he cast Serpensortia.

Also, there's a clear difference between apparating and that smokey shit that Death Eaters could do. I guess in the movie-verse, Voldemort had taught all of his servants the flying spell ? I dunno, but it didn't matter.

Despite those nitpicks, it was definitely enjoyable.

The tabloids here are actually giving this rather crushing reviews, and some 2/5 stars reviews. Granted, you can rarely take them seriously, but it's still funny to hear about it.

    Time to get this, then.

I dunno, Bellatrix had an epic curbstomp battle here. One of the best bits of the film :awesome

I thought it was pretty good, overall - but it's very clearly the first part of a single film. I know that sounds obvious, but I hope you know what I mean. I think once we're able to watch both parts at once, it'll feel a lot better. The setpieces were damn good, although there were a few nice character moments as well. Probably the best scene though was the shadow play. Beautiful stuff.

The Tale of the Three Brothers was fucking awesome. For whatever reason, when I read the actual tale I had pictured the shadow world that anyone wearing the ring in LotR saw, but the shadow play was infinitely better.

*Looks at the reviews in this thread and sees no mention of Dobby*

    Rages

Seriously, he was probably one of my favorite characters.

"Dobby didn't mean to kill! Dobby only meant to maim, or seriously injure."

    :awesome

I liked the dance scene and the fire spell Harry used with the wand Ron gave him. Some light pieces so that the overall dark tones don't overwhelm us are always good.

In conclusion; great movie, and I can't wait for the final part. (Six months! That's going to suck.)

I know! Dobby is a fucking madcunt in this.

But Hermione with Harry's face was the most disturbing thing I've ever seen.

I was kinda pissed off by dobby doing everything. Like wtf? Here's a bunch of wizards from Voldemort's inner circle and dobby's just humiliating them.
Although the character was certainly likeable and his death was sad too.

She at least looked like a proper torture victim. And her teary expression resonated with me for some reason. *shrugs*

I agree with everything else you said, though.

One other thing I liked about the movie was that Harry didn't seem totally incompetent. I mean, Hermione was clearly superior in terms of spellcasting, even in combat scenes like the one with Nagini/Bathilda Bagshot. There were various bits and pieces, though, where you can see that Harry doesn't entirely suck (e.g. at one point you seem him casting the wards for the campsite, he is able to duel Death Eaters).

I do wish there could have been more actual use of magic. The duels were essentially just magical firefights (although Lestrange's whip scene was sweet). On that note, I really, really hope that Part 2 will have a legitimate duel between Harry and Voldemort. I just can't imagine a movie adaptation doing exactly what happened in the book. At least the trailer seems to support the notion of an actual standoff.

Other random thoughts: The depiction of the Ministry (+ Nazi-ish propagandic transformation) was pretty good. Dobby was indeed a boss. Harry casting the Imperius Curse better be awesome. Finally, I will be sad if I do not see Kreacher + elf army.

I have to say that that was possibly the best battle scene out of all the films so far. It really portrayed Bellatrix the way she is put forward in canon, as an insane and extremely deadly fighter, those death eaters didn't stand a chance against here.
