In that thing you call a closet. Better watch out,
Is the Wizarding World backward? Yes. So, would Lily get money, when she is not Pureblood, and a women? No. James would have it all. True, James "loved" her, but even if he gave her any, why in the fuck would Lily give any to Petunia.

In her will, she would have to give some to Petunia, besides she is a Muggle, there are probably some rules.

Well, Since James parents died while he was so young, around 20ish. that would conceivably mean that He inherited money and property from his parents, which would cover schooling. and if he and lily had be sort of working for three years that would be some more money.

And I believe that the Weasleys are poor because of the number of children they have. Arthur works the the ministry, which is a government job. 7 kids of 7 years of hogwarts each, plus clothing and books and such, gets pricey, even for a muggle family sending their kids to a non-boarding school.

I had handmedowns with having an older brother, and my dad worked for most of his life. We were no means rich, but we had the enough for the important things, which is similar to how the weasleys function.

  3. This has bugged me for quite a while as well.

Though i would like to think, they believed that everything with the will would go fine and dandy after the their deaths (with their will's all in order) i'm not sure that would have gone to plan.

If Lily hated the Dursley's she probably would have put in her will "Do Not place Harry in the care of my sister" or words to the same effect, which leads me to think that the will was unread, or non-existant.

There would also be the money/possessions problem, what if they wanted other's to inherit something from them?

What I want to know is why didnt they become the secret keepers themselves... that way you hide in your own home and no one gets the secret if you dont want them to. If there was a traitor and i Knew it was my friend I would rather not take the chance.

As to the will thing. I figure its slightly different in the wizarding world. I aint a big dumbledore fan But because he got all those fancy goverment titles beside his headmaster title, he can probably use his clout to revoke certain aspects of the will for the greater good.

But as The book that shall not be named proved... Dumbledore is a idiot.

I'm of the opinion there was no will, and everything went to harry just because he was there son and anyone who would disagree with the boy who lived getting what his parents owned would be castrated politicly.

That's not how inheritance law works. If there is a direct descendant, collaterals and ascendants don't recieve any share.

Is wizarding inheritance law ever mentioned in Canon? I don't think it is, and if that's the case all this arguing is pointless. For all we know wizards don't write wills in the first place; that could be a muggle custom that the wizarding world never adopted. Remember, wizards ARE centuries behind muggles.

Not much is revealed about the Wizarding Law in canon, save for the decrees about status of secrecy and underage magic, and the use of Unforgivables being outlaw. But we do know the wizards write wills, since Sirius wrote one.

You know, I actually went through the trouble of fetching my copy of OotP, finding the right page and typing the most significant passages. Have you seen it? If so, I really don't see how you can say that. The question of why Harry was sent to the Dursleys' is explicitly given, and it has nothing to do with the absence/presence of a will. Please go and re-read the quote I posted.

On a side note, the Potters were tracked down by Voldemort so it's more than likely they had written a will, probably under Dumbledore's supervision.

If the will named Sirius as Harry's legal guardian, as I believe it did--from PoA--do you really think anyone would have wanted to respect the will to the letter, and give Harry to a guy who was believed to be a murderer? The Wizengamot would have probably named the Dursleys as guardians themselves, if Dumbledore hadn't beaten them to it--for reasons explained in a previous post.
