I don't think we want to be aiming for just random gross-out pairings here or taking the worst characters in the series and turning them into hawt sexy babes. That means no Ginny/Ripper or Cho/Colonel Fubster suggestions.

Harry/Romilda I don't know about, but I like the potential of Harry/Romilda's Mom (or hot older sister maybe).

What about Harry/Mary Dorkins? (Muggle newscaster from ch 1 of OotP, and there are some hot chicks doing the news)

Mr. and Mrs. Mason came to dinner at the Dursley's and got a pudding in their hair. Maybe they've got a hottie daughter.

Maybe Dursley neighbor "Yvonne" who did vacation in majorca.

Amy Benson was terrorized/molested/(killed?) by her orphanage mate Tom Riddle. She could have survived, had kids, traumatized more

I don't know how many newscasters you know, but every single one of them I know except one, thats one in ten, are stuck up arrogant assholes. The one that I know that's not is a 63 year old man who got into it a little later in life, and didn't seem to pick up the same tendencies the others have. It's only two news stations that I know these people from, and it's not current, as I worked in the stations a couple of years ago, but I'm pretty sure nothings changed. I don't know if Harry'd go for something like that unless there were other reasons involved. Just trying to be realistic.

Now, as for little Ms. Mason possiblity I could see the Dursley's inviting them over for dinner, trying to get Dudley a date for something (maybe an awards ceremony or something) and she ends up in the bedroom with Harry when they look away. Don't teenage girls like the bad-boy image combined with handsome guys?

Amy Benson is a little more far reaching, unless Harry has to meet her for some reason or another, maybe because he thinks Tom might have hidden something where she might know... it's usable, but a little harder to bring some realism to it. And hey, Harry walks in, finds out she was screwed up by magic and does a little magic of his own to fix it? Instant like or hate depending on his approach, especially if she's got a daughter that's been forced to take care of her mom for ages because of the magical problem that Harry just fixed.

Now, Yvonne just sounds like some MILF somewhere that needs a good one night stand, or a whole vacation away from her family.

Anyway, they're not bad, far outside the norm, and muggles to boot.

 

this is all well and good but my first problem is that when writing a harry/oc story based on a character that is hardly ever talked about kinda leaves .... to much to the imagination. like the daughter of the people who got pudding in the hair... shes not even an HP character anymore. for me, thats like cheating or something... idk. its just my opinion but the same thing happens occasionaly in harry centric stories where he does get with a girl from the book. they become so unlike the characters that are represented in the JK books that it is harry potter only in name. but i guess thats why its called fanfiction and not.... fiction fiction.

 

How about broadening the scope beyond standard people... that is to say living people.

Why not Harry/Ghost? Moaning Myrthle is too young, but that Ravenclaw silver lady could be interesting if she's somehow brought back to life or turns out she was alive all these time, only trapped in a ghost form or working on a comprehensive world history (thus using a spell that would stop her aging) or turns out to be Rowena Ravenclaw or something...

Or how about a painting? That mermaid in Perfect's bathroom seems interesting enough... if, say, she'd have an unique ability to leave her paiting, have her way with perfects bathing and oblivate them afterwards... Which is why everybody subconsciesly just love to go into that bathroom... Once Harry is made a perfect, she learns that memory charms don't work on him... Of course this is borderline beastiliality, so it might not be such a good idea... not to mention that would make her into kind of a slut.

De-aging could always work. McGonagall, Trellevani (sp), Petunia, Mrs Figgs, Andromeda, Grubbly-Plank, Hooch, Pince, Sprout etc... It's been done yes, but still leaves some opportunity.

Across the Mirror, link below. It's a oneshot right now, but I'm planning to expand it to a full story.

It's a nice ship and it hasn't been done with the exception of Silver Aegis's HP and the Girl Who Lived...a sad story with very little motivaton. And that one has a 17 year old Harry with a 14 year old "Lily".

Same age in mine.

By the way, should I put this into the General or Romance section? Read it and you'll understand the predicament.

 

I would actually love to see a story where Hogwarts mothers Harry. Yes, not as spectacular as Harry/Hogwarts, but that would be pretty cool.

Or even better, Hogwarts IS Harry's mother. Who would be the father?

Thats sounds interesting. Especially if Moldieshorts uses the link with Harry to create agents to battle, maybe a magical version of Agent Smith. Could even have those ghost guys with the straight razors roaming around. It does have some potential.

 

I do not see our hate as unhealthy at all! Its well founded and nurtured by nearly everyone on these boards! How could it be unhealthy?

I have always liked ships where canon characters are taken and OC-ised such as what I will be doing with my version of Luna. LT2000 did a good job OCising his Cho and he pretty much created Su - Li. Those are the kinds of ships I like.

For Hr I hate those fics, which are the majority of them, where she is this little ms. has to be all in the business and gets furious when the blanket gets pulled over her nose, but in the end she ends up with Harry.

 

The thing is is that choosing a pairing just for the hell of it doesn't really work too well (for the majority of cases). Often the 'meeting' will be very unrealistic and the following relationship underdeveloped and surreal. I know Cervus tried to get a H/Hestia Jones but just couldn't do it. A major reason why many non-pairing fics are better is because good authors go for the exotic pairings and mess up.

Best thing: H/OC. All the people mentioned previously are practically OC so why not make up your own character for Harry to stumble across? This'll mean it might actually fit in the story (unless you make her a beautiful, flawless Mary-Sue).

 

MS speaks the truth. I did indeed try to include an Harry/Hestia pairing into the plot of the latest story that I'm working on. I have, in hindsight, dropped the romance aspect all together. The issue, however, lies not with the actual characterisation of her as a person, but rather with the part the romance would play in the plot as a whole. There was no legitimate reason for me to include the romantic aspects of Harry's life in the story, and for that reason it won't be included.

I also think that he has a point about OC's. I found that, while I was still writing the romance into the story, Hestia Jones was an OC in everything but name. I think, more than anything, to make a pairing good first and foremost the romance has to have a good reason to be included (ie. as part of the plot or as some part of the main characters development) and that the characters involved have to be developed to a decent standard.

In conclusion. I don't think it matters what name is given to the person with whom Harry (or the main character) is romantically involved with, but rather that the character is included for a good reason and that they are sufficiently developed to a standard that the reader doesn't feel like they are just included as an half-arsed attempt at romance/plot furtherance.

 

Actually I've never seen a Harry is Tom's father, and I think it would be interesting. What if someone wrote it that 'the power he knows not' is some sort of paternal thing? Could be interesting. Seriously could someone pass along and Harry is Tom's Father fics?
