Alright, I seem to keep reading stuff that has Harry keeping his standard Holly and Phoenix feather wand, and that pisses me off more than a bit, as despite a ridiculously large amount of differences in personality, he still has the same wand. Are there no fics that are above 70,000 words that have Harry getting a different wand?

Seems more like a pet peeve than anything else. It is the brother wand of Voldemort; changing the wand only prevents Priori Incantatem. Unless you're giving him new powers based off of it.

Other than that, wands don't really seem all that important when it comes to usage by Harry. The most you'd get is an off hand comment about how such and such magic seems easier.

Edit: Also, though it may have nothing to do with it, Holly is the symbol for those born in July by the Celtic Zodiac, which has to do with trees. I think Hermione's falls within it as well, but it probably doesn't go with all wand choices.

 

It's a plot device that has been used to death, so to speak.

It's been done well a few times with the more 'realistic' options (even if some of the components are a tad unusual albeit conventional), but most stories that use this device use 'teh uber wand with a basilisk fang/venom/unicorn penis' corez!'

Or a staff. With a ruby/diamond cap. :facepalm

Also ties into the whole 'linked destiny' thing with Voldemort, but if something else is going to overshadow that destiny with its own challenge, a new wand is plausible in my eyes.

Agreed. I do dislike the plot line where a staff or some crazy shit is used in a wand, like one story I read where they used a Giant's urine. T'was weird to say the least. What i'm looking for though, is a story where the wand is important in the story, and gives a change from the mundane use of the regular wand. There was one, but I can't remember what it was called, where Harry holds the Holly and Phoenix feather wand, but it causes him pain, as the wand that fucked him up is its brother. If anyone knows the title to that, it would be awesome.

Getting a custom wand is an essential part of the cliche shopping trip. You're not a fanfic writer until you have written that scene.

Here's the single worst chapter of a story I've ever written. I'm not proud of it, but it's ancient history to me. The wand part is at the end. The chapter serves as a good reminder of how not to write a story.

I really should just remove that story from ffn, but it's the only story I've ever completed -_-

Oh, and the vast majority of the genre is not much better, so I wouldn't look too hard.

Damn, I thought I'd lost this forever. I didn't know about DLP when I read this, and I thought it was half-decent.

 

I didn't know about DLP when I wrote it, and I thought it was half decent as well. It's amazing how much has changed in just a year, DLP has spoiled me.

 

I thought the question was asking why Harry gets the Holly and Phoenix feather wand all the time even when he isn't the same as his canon counterpart. It brings up the idea of that statement Ollivander gave us about every wand chooses the wizard. If Harry had grown up with Sirius instead of the Dursley's would a different wand have chosen him?

Though I assume Harry is a special case. Not every child shows up to buy their wand with the soul fragment of Voldemort in their head. Even if Harry had grown up showered in love or physically abused I assume he'd get the same wand because of those circumstances.

Though I'm sure it has been discussed many times before this.

 

The other cringe-inducing, done-to-death cliche regarding wands would be a legacy wand.
I forgot the name of the story but in it, Harry got Merlin's AND Flamel's wands AND Ravenclaw's ring-wand thingy.:facepalm
