Whoops. I just noticed the mis-spell. But it's more to do with the fact that every time I go shopping, something creepy or odd happens. I think the fear of dog leashes is fully justifiable though. :awesome

 

At the risk of extending this tangent... This.

First: People fuck up the cliché. It's not that guys hate shopping, it's that they hate going shopping with women who expect you to stand RIGHT THERE and watch them, while they spend two hours browsing scrunchies and slingbacks in a store that's playing mind-numbing muzak, when you could be doing something useful, like plucking out your own eyeballs.

Guys shopping on their own waste their time looking at whatever the hell they want, rather than fleeing from the store in terror.

Second: Even ignoring the first point, Harry has every reason in the world to WANT to go shopping. He's never had jack shit bought for him, he's essentially been living as though he were dirt poor his whole life, and now he has major cash flow.

Why wouldn't he want to go out and buy something?

Third: While I do hate stories where Harry goes out and spends a million galleons on stupid shit, half of it being clothes, I will admit that the person described above, having survived such privation, when confronted with their first ever shopping trip, is significantly more likely to blow a wad of cash on stupid shit... just because they can.

Sometimes though, a new/different wand can be a useful thing to implement - like stereotypes. It can be used to dump information quickly and easily. I'm sure in PS Ollivander says how Harry's parent's wands were better at different styles of magic.

However, when people just change wands for the hell of it, I do find it annoying. What they'll have written will be completely superflous to the story.

One fic I think does this sort of well is Landstradd's 'Sorting Hat's Stand' .
Apart from that, I can't remember seeing it being done well AND being important (albeit only slightly, so far)

 

Sortings Hat Stand as a good different wand fic? Harry gains a new power every other day, and his wand has the core of an extinct dragon that destroyed rome.

 

Yeah, so I went and re-read the actual wand scene part. And you're right. Perhaps detail going into it is a bit OTT.

But then throughout the rest, Harry enjoys setting things on fire and blowing the crap outta stuff.

can't really comment on the new power every day part. I've always quite liked reading Landstradd's stuff, so I tended to forgive minor silliness like that.

 

Damn, I'd really hate to see what you consider massive silliness of Sorting Hat's Stand in only minor silliness.

 

I'm enjoying the continued use of the word 'silliness'. Seriously though, Sorting Hat's Stand is major silliness, just with fun explosions and the like, and tbh, who doesn't like explosions?
