Seeing as entries have completely dried up, you have 24 hours to submit your team. After that I'm rolling with the first sixteen people to submit their teams, and hosting another tournament for the others. There will be some overlap if that happens but whatever.

If we manage to scrape up another seven teams before tomorrow then we'll go with the full tournament. In other words...

Well this is it. The first draw has been made. Everybody involved get yourselves on irc and the server ASAP.

After every battle, report the result to me and I'll update the chart. The clauses you must have activated before battle are; Sleep, Freeze, Evasion, OHKO and item.

Each battle is a single match.

The first few battles have taken place and the bracket now looks like this:

 

I wasn't going to post this, because it seems like rubbing salt in the wound to dazzle you all with my amazing fighting skills, then turn right back around and show off my sensitive artistic side.

Still, to not post this would be grossly unfair to the pokemon who will inevitably earn this honor at the closing ceremony of the tournament. I felt it would be wrong to not give it every moment of glory it deserved.

Nice to see the tournament's moving so quickly. To the losers, why did you lose? You don't have to say anything specific (especially if you're using your team again in the next tournament [assuming there is one]) but why did you lose? Dumb luck (50 critical hits in a row)? Or were you against a team that was too effective against you (ie you didn't have enough counter to sleep / poison)? Be as vague as necessary :d.

 

My team was made weeks ago, and I hadn't bothered changing it before the tourney started.

But the main reason is because Gliscor is a dirty whore that likes to show assets before admitting that it really has nothing else to offer.

 

So, after an epic battle between Chaos and Vira(Mel). The bracket looks like this.

The match between Silens and myself was dominated by a middle period of recall and counter-recall. I feel that comparatively, I was able to always stay a half-step ahead of Silens during this, both due to our overall team makeup, and my early victory over his Froslass with my Tauros. I also managed to somehow get a 'free' move in with Marowak, which I used to Swords Dance. It helped.


Despite the facetiousness, MVP for me really was Venusaur. I won't go into specifics here, but Silens had a number of heavy hitters that my Venusaur strategy was able to counter with surprising effectiveness, even when type would have suggested otherwise.


Overall, a good match. I'm going on memory here, but I think that I had won with three guys fainted, two wounded, and one that never came into play. If there's an interest (and I place well enough to allow it), I'll say a point or two about my team building strategy later on.

 

;.; I had come into the tourney with great hopes and probably a bit too much confidence. That turned out to be my downfall against mknote when his Toxicroak decide to destroy most of my team ;.;. So with my tail firmly in between my legs I thought i would redeem myself against Kalas. Unfortunately with a inspired moveset from some old faces I managed to crash out. It did, however, come down to the last pokemon with a remaining 53 hp.

 

Wait Ahsun was you Kang? 0.o

 

My money's on chaos.

Epic asskicking was just had, as Torak throws me into the loser's bracket.

 

And my lovely rape train stops at the 3rd round.

Good match to mknote and I hope he takes it.

 

I don't have a notion of what happened, as I was away; but this is how the tourney stands at the minute.

 

He still could. Also, Derulo beat Vlad, but I'll update in the morning.

 

I'm out. Good matches to Torak and Derulo. I made a few really dumb mistakes against D that probably made a difference in the degree of asskicking, but I won't take away from his well fought game.

Full Disclosure:

I have only played the Kanto-based games (originals and the remakes) and so it ought to come as no surprise that my roster and with few exceptions, my moveset, all came from Gen. 1.

Tauros

There was an NU tournament on 420chan a while back and I went with Tauros and had surprisingly good results. I like him as an opener, and he performed fairly well in the tournament - terrible luck that against Derulo, his opening attack hit for 98% damage, but them's the breaks. Goal is just to take out their starter through brute force.

Nothing fancy going on here, a standard OU with its standard moveset. A below average performance in the tourney, not least because I kept using thunderbolt against goddamn Lantern... oops.

Venusaur

Giga Drain, Leech Seed, Sleep Powder, Sludge Bomb

Bulbasaur is the only starter I ever choose, and thus it had to be on my team. First time I've used this moveset, which I developed in response to special vs. physical move changes taking away brute-force strategy. I'm fairly happy with Sludge Bomb > Toxic, and he performed pretty well in the tournament. The Leech Seed/Giga Drain/Leftover combination is very satisfying.

Marowak
Adament Nature, Thick Club
Max Attack, Max Speed
Swords Dance, Bonemerang, Ice Beam, Fire Punch

Guy held his own, but its critical to get the Swords Dance in during an enemy switch or status skipped turn.

Primeape
Hardy Nature, Salac Berry
Max Attack, Max Speed
Close Combat, Protect, Seed Bomb, Thunderpunch

Basically, same strategy as Tauros except against different types. It's not a terrible strategy, but given the number of things my team proved to be lacking in (antispikes and antisteel most notable), it was foolish to have Primeape and Tauros. Primeape has less speed but proved to have more chance to effectively use his STAB. Odds are I'll have to revamp all around and will end up using neither.

Jynx
Calm Nature, Focus Sash
Max Hit Points, Max Special Defense
Perish Song, Mean Look, Protect, Psychic

HOLY SHIT!!! A JYNX!!!
The good news was nobody expected it. The bad news was that didn't matter at all. Jynx actually pulled off two suicides against types that would have given me trouble, so it wasn't a complete waste, but terrible defense and speed meant it really didn't do what it was intended to do. I should have given it Lovely Kiss instead of Psychic - it was no use trying to actually fight with it, and as such I just wasted a move slot. Kiss --> Perish --> Mean Look --> Protect could have been a potentially awesome strategy, and I'd have done better then putting its points into Speed. I didn't, and I ended up with a dud. You learn...
