Quick question guys: How do I sell?

I've sold some of my stuff around an hour ago and it's still pending. Is there any particular option choose or does it normally take that long?

I believe the Stock Exchange is closed for today, just as it is in the real world.

I'm pretty sure that means we can't buy or sell til it opens again. However to sell I just clicked on the Ticker in my portfolio and it seemed to give me the option, though I haven't actually sold anything yet.

Yep. You can't buy/sell stocks when the Exchange is still closed.

So if we made a purchase or sold does that mean it goes into effect when the exchange opens? Or do we have to redo?

It will be bought first thing in the morning.

Also, you can institute limit orders, instructing the system to buy or sell certain shares of a company as soon as it goes under or over a certain amount.

Helpful when you want to get the best possible deal.

My experience with the system is that, even when the stock market is open, it can still take several hours (yet also sometimes only a few minutes) for a transaction (purchase or selling) to process, by which time the price of the stock will have changed.

Fucked me over a few times, that.

Also, if you cancel a pending transaction, it doesn't cancel it. It just does it anyway.

lol @ Google losing me $61...Fuck you too Google, fuck you too.

I've never felt so noobish in my entire life, but playing with stocks is most definitely NOT my thing. Where's Scott Trade, or whatever the hell it's called, when you need them?

Yeah I would never do this with real money. If I wanted to gamble I might have a better chance playing poker or blackjack.

Hrmmm, ok. I need to figure out how to work that "limit" function then Amer. If I click "limit" in the buy/sell box, I assume it would work like... if I put 5 dollars in there, it will buy or sell when it reaches 5 a share? Or when it can buy the number of stocks I entered in for 5? Or sell, etc? It's probably in the instructions somewhere but I've only read about half of those. Intend to get to it tonight.

Also I just realized that by making, uh, 56 different purchases I spent about 560 dollars in commissions. I hope I make that back up because that's a PITA. Probably shouldn't have been so stock-happy, but I wanted to spread out my purchases a lot to see what does well and what doesn't.

Good find on the game. Enjoying it so far and I think I'll continue to.

I made quite a few mistakes earlier today, but I think I've learnt from them. Here are my three three steps of deciding if a company is something to invest in:

    1. Look at the company's 1-year, 2-year, and 5 year growth. This should show you if they're something sustainable or something very volatile that could lose you a lot of money if you invest at the wrong time.

    2. Next look at the 2-month growth. This should show you if the company is currently in an upswing or not (some fluctuation will always occur). If it is a) looking like it's about to peek, or b) looking like it's in the middle of a downturn, don't invest. You want something with fairly good 2-month growth. After all, sustainability is good, but safe bets aren't going to win you the game.

    3. Finally, look at 5 day growth. This won't matter so much in the long term, but it means you can get the best possible price for your stock. Buy in a trough, not an upswing. If you've found a company that passes 1 and 2, but is in a boom, wait a bit for the price to fall before investing. Price fluctuates several times a day, so this should only be a few hours.

I'm starting to hate this $2.00 minimum - it won't even let you set a stop to buy stock when the price goes over 2 bucks. >_<

I'm in and losing money already. Pretty sure I made a mistake buying too many high priced shares.

Ah well, got plenty of time for things to turn around.

The only problem I really have with this game (and by proxy I suppose playing the market in general) is that I get antsy because I can't check on it at night. I barely have time during the day to fool with it, then when I do have time it's "closed."

    I'll get used to it.

For everyone who didn't want to google it though, seems like the New York Stock Exchange at Wall Street is open from Monday through Friday 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Eastern Time. (NYSE)

Taure, for anyone starting out on the Exchange, this is great advice.

One more thing I might suggest is that you only buy in companies where you have a fairly strong understanding of their operation. It will allow you to understand why a stock price will rise and fall.

I'm taking a couple of risks and buying stocks in Google, Apple and Broadcom, but nothing else. Let's see if it pays off.

Damn the price limit. I wanted to invest everything in Blockbuster.

Instead I invested heavily in Panera Bread and AMD. Wooo logic.
