Smile -- think Blockbuster will do decently? I saw it and almost invested, but then I remembered that with things like Red Box, Netflix, Internet Downloads, and so forth... well, seems to me like it's going the way of the Dodo.

But then I probably watch about a dozen movies a year, so it's entirely possible I could be missing something.

I have a few questions though. I looked in the instruction area and didn't find it, so... I'm trying to figure out how the "limit" function works. I know it's supposed to either buy or sell when stocks reach a certain amount, but I don't know...

If I put 5000 in there, does it buy / sell when the # of stocks I put in (say, 1000) can be bought or sold for 5000 dollars? Or does it buy / sell the number of stocks that can currently be bought / sold for 5000?

What does the "stop" function do?

@Taure: I'm not sure if your advice is good or not, but for what it's worth that's pretty much what I started doing too after a while. So I think it's awesome advice.

EDIT: This helps, though I'm still getting my head 'round it. Stop vs. Limit:awesome:awesome

I think Blockbuster will fail hard. What I do know is that if they managed to repair themselves, I would get a profit of like, 10x.

I'm in - I'm terrible at following this sort of thing though, so I'm likely to invest in a few long term scenarios, and then down the road when I remember about this, hope it all paid dividends.

*Edit* Or at least I thought I was in. I signed up, and joined game, but isn't showing me as in game. Hm.

*Edit2* I'm an idiot, but am in now. Time to go on a shopping spree!

Midyear PM me about resetting your portfolios. I'll only consider this if you've done something hilariously stupid like invest in Blockbuster, which is closing its doors faster than buffets when they see an oncoming Oz.

Ha, I'll try this out. Want to see just how badly I fail at this.

Holy Shit indeed. Did you just randomly select as many companies as possible and then pick the ones that were over $2 per share?

Okay I'm in, should be interesting, especially to play around with money that I don't have to worry about.

One question though, does anybody know how dividends work in this game?

I'm hoping that my stocks pick themselves up in the long run. Right now all of them are doing spectacularly badly, but its early days.

I'm interested in the %equity column, does this actually mean anything in game or is it meaningless statistics.

Haha @ all the Holy $%#&! comments about my beautiful Portfolio. You're all just jealous. Admit it. ;)

There was some method to the madness, though not much. It was a combination of picking sectors via this route that I thought might be good investments (such as Pharmacy, Technology, Oil and Gas), looking at growth over a wide timeframe, and then buying ones between 2 and 20 bucks. That's where about half of it came from.

Several other investments (Intel, AMD, AT&T, GSK, Lenovo, etc.) were companies I knew of and thought I'd try investing in.

Lastly I checked out a Business Week magazine in the bookstore and got 2-3 ideas from there. I think I also selected another 4-5 stocks based on a google search, though most of what I found via google was for Penny stocks.

    Bwahaha, I shall prevail!

This column shows you how much you have gained or lost in that specific company from when you purchased the stocks, but in terms of percentages rather than an actual dollar amount.

Here's the Wikipedia article on it for further reading.

Pretty sure it just shows you the value of the asset as a percentage of total equity. Not that I understand anything about finance, but that's how the math seems to work.

Lol I invested a lot in some Chinese energy recycling company. Needless to say, I got pwned quite heavily.

Second day and my stocks did a nice 180 degree turn-around, making up for a poor first day performance. Gas and Chemical industries are the way to go.

Quick question: I've used up most of my buying power (got a $98k margin) and I'm guessing I'll be paying interest on that borrowed money, correct?

I invested in the same company and it bit me in the ass heavily.
