Click here to take the survey.

Click here to see the results. Since it doesn't show up on the results page, a quick reminder for the "Trope Alert" section: 1 is "Strong Dislike" and 5 is "Strong Like".

    Last year's thread here.

Some new questions this year. I've also finally got rid of the politics section as it generally just produced homogeneous results anyway, and some people who are less political didn't like having to answer those questions.

Perhaps, if there is appetite for it, we could have a separate political survey.

A staple of DLP's calendar. I'm about to get in a kayak, but I'll take the survey later today.

I really like these surveys. I think they are fascinating.

I'd be interested in a separate political survey. How are the questions determined? As someone who has some experience in this area, I'm interested in how you go about deciding.

Not sure if you mean the questions in this survey or a hypothetical political survey.

If this one: the questions mostly come out of the fics I've read and the HP conversations I've observed over the course of the year, both on DLP and elsewhere, and accumulate year to year. The addition of the trope section last year was the biggest development, which I think added a lot to the survey. This year I organised that section a bit more logically (wizarding world, magic, Harry, other characters, genres) and added some more questions.

Look at that, the annual DLP sausagefest is back!

In all seriousness, it is once again a very engaging survey that forced me to question my own preconceived notions of what a quality fic should or could be about. And interestingly enough, while I would argue that there are some irredeemably bad story ideas, I found that I don’t actually mind some of the tropes I thought I would, as long as they can be executed well within my range of comfort as a reader, or have been in the past. Not what I expected at all, but perhaps that is also due to the relative broadness of the questions.

I continue to find it strange that thinking OotP was the best book is unusual.

The true winner of the DLP survey is Albus Dumbledore.

It does suprise me how few girls there are on here (admittedly not too many have taken the survey yet.) In my head it's about 25% but in reality it is probably less than 10%.

It does feel a bit surprising, at least until I try to come up with names. Ched, Lindsay, you, Ironrose, and I'm already starting to blank a little at that point. In comparison I could probably go on forever for the dudes peopling DLP.

As to the survey: great that my boy Albus won out.

Suprisingly large proportion of the userbase in favour of actual slavery. A bold choice.

I'm assuming that in the "who would win in a duel between Dumbledore, Voldemort and Grindelwald" question, number 1 meant 1st place and so on.

To the 4 people who picked fem!Harry as their favorite het romantic partner for Harry:

I'm not mad, I'm just curious. Are there actually stories that do this to the extent where you're like "yep, this is peak fandom right here."

    And if there are

Next year, can we throw in - what theme do you use for DLP? I am sure there must be a ripe underground alternative theme scene. LLPs represent.

I would say no to that since I can't think of any outstanding 5/5 fics in the category. The amount of fics with the pairing is already quite low to begin with, especially if you don't count the bad ones and all the porn.

Also, I'm dissapointed that Voldebabe wasn't an alternative.

I didn't expect the proportion of Europeans to be higher than North Americans, though I'm not too surprised in retrospect.

I think it's funny that so many people here rarely read fanfiction. At this point, I find myself enjoying the discussions more than most fics.

I'm surprised there aren't any people that only read fics without explicit sex scenes, but I suppose I shouldn't be. I was unsure if I should have answered "no" or "yes, but I dislike them", the main reason being that I haven't read a fic with such a scene recently, so I don't know how I would react.

I am completely baffled that 50% prefer Harry/Hermione over Harry/Ginny. Can't wrap my head around it.

    Dumbledore's the man as expected.

I sort of agree with enembee about the house elf thing.

I love the shift in the shield charm questions. I wonder how everyone interprets the shield charm's mechanism. Why can it stop one muggle thing but not another? I'm surprised so many said yes to the shield charm stopping a nuke though. I would have thought it to be a more radical idea.

Why do people have stronger feelings regarding a large wizard population vs small or medium?

I'm the only one that likes soul bonds. That's funny.

Dodging spells just reminds me of Sinanju from Remo the destroyer series. Too goofy. There was a really funny scene in that fic, Timely Errors. Completely killed any interest in seeing people dodge spells.

I think people feel more strongly about a large population because of all the questions it raises. If there's a large population then what jobs does everyone do? How does the economy work? And people either want to read stories where that's done well or they want to avoid the issue at all and have the population be small enough that half the damn population can work at the Ministry.

I guess... having a large population implies things that people either feel strongly about reading or avoiding, whereas a small population just lets all that get ignored?
