Thats a hard one to answer since the books really leave out all the teenage sex people in a co-ed boarding school would be having.

 

I don't think that we really know enough about James to be sure one way or another. All that we do know of him is through what characters who did know him said about him and Snape's pensive memories.

They've been teaching sex ed in England in some form or another since, at least, the Fifties. Though it only got on the National curriculum in 1993, so I suppose it is possible for Harry to not have had it. Regardless of that, I imagine that one of the adults probably gave it to him off screen. Rowling wanted to entertain her readers not give them an embarrassing in-book birds and the bees talk.

And why do they call it birds and the bees anyways? I've always wondered about that and yet I have never actually asked.

I can see it as 5th 6th,7th year thing.
Starting to pay attention to her in the 5th year, while she refuse his advances he play in the field.
Until he manage to successfully get Lily attention

Well, it seems unlikely that 11 year old James was properly in love with her - a childish crush, perhaps. Also, real world vs fiction - it kinda fits the YA, fairy tale-esque quality that a lot of the romance arcs in HP have
