For those who've not heard of this, "Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog" is Joss Whedon's brand new musical short thingie posted online. Broken down into three parts, each about ten minutes. Starring Neil Patrick Harris as Dr. Horrible, the 'less than super' villain who always gets thwarted by the hero, Captain Hammer played by the always awesome Nathan Fillion (best known as Mal from Firefly/Serenity).

I know it may sound ridiculous, but this thing has me more excited than just about any of this fall's new tv shows.

Down the line, I expect there to be a DVD of this filled with extras, but first it'll just be free on the net. This is what happens when there's a writer's strike and a genius like Joss Whedon with little to do.

I figured it's time to spread the word on this little project now that there's a teaser video for it on the official site here: http://drhorrible.com/

The official fan site with news and updates is here: http://doctorhorrible.net/

    NPH + Captain Tightpants + Lord Whedon = uber-awesome.

Joss Whedon gets top marks from me for just about everything he does... but I'm a little surprised at the apparent fan base for something that's just a tralier and a few days ago wasn't even that.

The trailer is pretty funny though. It's very camp and cheezy. It doesn't take itself seriously and that's refreshing.

Speaking of Joss Whedon- anyone else looking foreword to Dollhouse when it premiers in January? After Firefly, I'm kind of wary of a Joss show on Fox again, but Dollhouse looks awesome and they seem surprisingly commited.

He's like an abused spouse going back home because their partner promises they'll never do anything like that again. I'm still a little pissed about Firefly. I'm gonna be cynical about Dollhouse next year. I'll take every episode that is produced as a bonus and not expect anything more.

Well, I'm pretty sure the only reason he went back to Fox is because Eliza Dushku had a development deal with them, and he wanted to work with her. As for Dollhouse's chances- I have a little bit of faith, considering that they could not possibly treat it worse then they did Firefly (shitty PR and airing episodes out of order for the motherfucking win), and that despite it, Joss' projects tend to last a long time. Buffy had seven seasons, and Angel, the spinoff, had 5. Even Firefly had a movie made of it eventually.

Well I know a big part of the Dollhouse deal with Fox was that they weren't paying him to make a pilot and then make a decision. It was for seven episodes guaranteed. Since then that's been upped to 12 or 13 episodes (can't remember). Whether Fox airs them all remains to be seen. I'm guessing the show will run from January til the end of next tv season. The ratings will decide if it goes beyond that. There is a decent trailer for Dollhouse here.

I think Fox won't be nearly as quick cutting the cord on Dollhouse given how well Firefly did after it got canceled. It's also possible the show won't be as good as his others. We shall see.

Looks amusing. Isn't Dr Horrible the psychic guy out of Starship Troopers too? I'll have to pick it up when it comes out, Weadon is a genius when it comes to TV.

The psychic guy from Starship Troopers? NPH is best known as Doogie! A sixteen year old star of his own hit tv show for four seasons. He's best known as Barney 'Legen... wait for it... dary' Stinson. Or he's best known for playing himself as a car-stealing cokewhore sniffing crack off of naked strippers in the Harold and Kumar movies. Hell, if you just search "NPH" on imdb.com it goes straight to his page. But the psychic guy in Starship Troopers? Yeah, that's him too. Great movie.

Never even heard of Doogie, probably an American show that hasn't made its way over here. Same with the second one. Haven't seen the newest Harold & Kumar yet... Been meaning to pick it up on dvd for a while though >_>.

So yeah, only place I know him from is Starship Troopers :p.

Doogie Howser, MD. It's a show from the late 80's to early 90's about a young prodigy who works as a medical doctor but still has the typical troubles of a teenager. That doesn't ring any bells? The guys who created it went on to work on NYPD Blue, LA Law, Chicago Hope, Ally McBeal, and many more.

The episodes will air on the official website drhorrible.com as follows:

    Part 1 - Tuesday July 15
    Part 2 - Thursday July 17
    Part 3 - Saturday July 19

These episodes will “air” online only until July 20.

Following that they will be made available for download at a “nominal fee” and in the near future available to buy on a very special DVD “with the finest and bravest extras in all the land”.
    ------

Someone had better revive this thread on the 19th when it comes out. I'd hate to miss it.

Normally I don't much care for extras and commentaries, but the commentary on the eventual DVD will itself be a musical. I'd love to hear that.

    Interview with Whedon here: http://community.tvguide.com/blog-entry/TVGuide-Editors-Blog/Roush-Dispatch/Joss-Whedon-Dr/800042425

There is also an 8-page comic that I haven't come across. It might not be released yet.

It'll be interesting what Fox does with Dollhouse, but I can't wait for Dr. Horribles singalong blog. It'll be entertaining for certain.

as for NPH: Hilarious ad he did. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1hAXRvrGsmY

NPH + Whedon + Fillion = Too much win for the universe to handle.

It'll be sad, when it all blows up. July 15th, you say? I'll have to cancel my hair cut.

Joss Whedon's 'Dr. Horrible' is a site-crashing success

Site came up, tons of people went to watch and bickety-bam, it all came crashing down.

Go ahead and envy me. I loaded up Act I early this morning and halfway watched it. Went back to the bedroom computer and the page was still up so I just now watched it all the way through properly.

Some of the dialogue, like the start is a little tiresome, but I freaking love the songs! The first one, when the music comes in and NPH just plays the adorable dainty super-villain singing, "Laundry Day"... Excellent.

Okay. There's some lag issues with the new server for Dr. Horrible.

Here's the address for it: http://207.57.78.179/

Problem is, hulu.com checks the referrer, and that links straight to the IP. If you can spoof the referrer, you can play the video. Or if you just edit your own hosts file to convince your own computer that the IP above resolves to www.drhorrible.com, then you can also play the video.

Here's a forum thread explaining how if you don't want to wait for the new server to get referrals working right.

I haz Hosts Manager to tricksy my Windows boxen. Huzzah!

It works. I've gone over my bandwidth limit so I'm speed limited to 64kbps (a mere 8kbps faster than dialup). I'm going to have to leave this video paused for hours until it's all cached.

Hulu sucks. Unlike Youtube I can't even seek backwards without having to re-stream the video. I'll only get to watch it once.

edit: Fucking Hulu. It'll only cache one minute of video at a time. Then I have to watch that one minute before it will cache another minute of video for me. This episode is 14 minutes long. That's 14 separate one minute long segments spread half an hour apart.

Does anyone know how to rip a Hulu video using free software? Downloading (rather than streaming) seems like the only way to watch it on a slow connection.

edit2: I just watched the whole thing. It's pretty funny. It's more polished that the old musical Buffy episode. I loved Dr. Horrible's evil henchman, Moist. What's he going to do, drip drop the enemy to death?

    Balls.

So far, the opening song of Act Two is my favorite.
