There are some really famous writers who supposedly only wrote when completely shitfaced. There was one guy in particular...can't remember his name, but his writing was horrible. No grammar what so ever. His editor was lucky to get periods at the end of sentences much less all of that other nonsense. Amazing writing, but only after the extremely overworked editor cleaned it up by inserting things like commas, periods, paragraphs, chapters...

I know Poe was famous for being drunk more often than sober. There are some authors quite contrary to this in that they are drunk quite often but don't write while drunk or even with a small buzz. Hemingway was one of the more famous writers who seemed to sober up just long enough to write. :)

    What a great thread.

I write (fan-)fiction in one of two ways - legless or bone-dry. Either extreme. If I know where a story is headed and have roughed out a chapter's content, I will usually have two goes at the same chapter, in either state, and later take the best parts from both. Most of early Unforgiven, in fact, was written like this, and I'm not writing any of my current fanfic whilst sober. Though bear in mind that for me 'legless', once a month or so (and to the horror of various impressionable people on the board) implies coke and booze instead of just the latter. I couldn't stay awake for it without.

All of my original poetry was written while tipsy. Most of it is drabble but one or two pieces are actually above par - this is more to do with my mediocre poetry skills than the state I'm in, however. Equally, I'm barely ever on DLP when I'm sober (as is fairly evident).

And Joe; Glenfiddich > Glenmorangie. A quarter bottle, aged for 14 years in Spanish and American 'rich oak' barrels, has got me through this fine All Hallows' Eve.

I suppose, grudgingly, that it comes down to personal taste.

Though my heart screams 'He's Wrong!'

If you're ever in Scotland with a bit of money to spare, go to the original Albannach in Edinburgh. Tried 17 that I'd never heard of from their 100+ whiskies, bought 4 and still have a Tobermory and a Laphroaig unopened. The place is incredible. The Trafalgar Sq one just isn't the same :(

    Depends on what you want.

I find fiddich to be be pretty much the 'king of smooth'. It's one of those scotches that you can drink a hell of a lot of and not realize you're doing it.

Glenmorangie definitely has a peatier (is that a word?) flavor.

Also, I have an unopened bottle of Glenfiddich 50 Year Old that I bought in Scottland while on vacation with the wife. She's still having problems believing that I dropped that much cash on a bottle of scotch, no matter how fucking good it is :)

EDIT: Writing my thesis was made much easier by the mild influence of Glenfiddich.

I'm really sorry if you wrote more than this, but this is all I saw.

/Adds dmacx to hate-list. If I wasn't already green, I fucking would be now.

I have difficulty focusing enough to put coherent words to paper even when sober. I suppose I've never actually 'tried' writing when a bit gone, but I can't imagine the results would be terribly good for me, at least.

As both Joe and NMBro seem to draw inspiration from it, I've spent my food budget for the month on Glenmorangie in the hopes that it'll inspire me to start writing - the assignment was to write something in a Nadsat-inspired narrative, so enough lube will definitely help me with that.

    Yay.

I don't how you can write while drinking. I picture y'all sitting in a dark room, bottle in hand, staring at your computer's word processing software while "I'm So Ronery" plays in the background.

    So NAY for me.

You need to look no further than Zombie's excellent 'What's The Story, Morning Glory' in WbA. It's the only Stoner!Harry story really worth two shits.

Ruskbyte's Flying Without a Broom is the most hilarious stoner fic I've ever read. Go for that one, despite it being abandoned.

I would rather write when I'm sober, but sadly most of my inspiration for stories comes from random thoughts while on alcohol, blow, and marijuana. I often get an idea down when I'm fucked up, forget completely about it when I finally am sober once again, and then rewrite it completely after remembering my 'fantastic' plot idea.

Often I carry a netbook with me in case I want to hop onto Facebook or something a lot more interesting (fanfiction? Pr0n?) when I'm getting shit-faced with close friends, so I'll end up thinking of something random when I'm zoning out of a conversation and then running over to write it down. I'm a sad individual.

    This.

Though I don't smoke weed, because it makes you stupider and God knows I don't need more of that.

Some colleagues of mine and I held an evening a few years back specificaly devoted to getting shitfaced and writing, in that order. Sure, times were had, but I found the 'writing' part of that equation fell out the window in a communal environment.

Arguing opinions either way is pretty nonsensical.

I personally prefer blow, because it does exactly what I look for in a drug, and makes any night 27% better without fail. I use it on big nights out or at important work socials, so actually only about once or twice a month. Marijuana makes me white out and very ill, and even if it didn't, sitting around laughing at Wayans Brothers comedies isn't what I go for on a night out. So, for me, white beats green.

    Everyone has their own poisons.
