So, after one google search with very mixed (read: poor) results (and a failed forum search, which I'm blaming on a combination of Crown Royal and operator error),decided to see if anyone here has had better luck than I did looking for stories featuring Harry as a duelist.

It can be a semi canon-compliant story in which Harry chooses to duel professionally rather than become an auror, an au in which Harry is being taught by a former dueling champion (say, Flitwick), or any myriad other options.

Basically I just want some reading material based around Harry as or becoming a skilled duelist. And while I enjoyed Johnny Farrar's (sp?) dabble in the topic, I'm hoping for something a bit more fleshed out.

Lie I've Lived is complete (fic wise, story was left for a sequel that was never posted afaik). It doesn't have Harry who goes into professional dueling, but it has a LOT of duel scenes in it and explores the concept of dueling pretty well.

 

Yeah, pretty good fic. And it has one of hpff's most memorable characterizations in the Sorting Hat.

That reminds me of lessons with Kwan and Thunderbird in Bungle in the Jungle, too. And makes me want to re-read To Fight The Coming Darkness.

Am working on a story that will have some duelling in it, I don't know if I'll be any good at describing them, but something should be up here soon, have been looking for a story like this lately as well.

Delenda Est has some deulling, Harry vs Bellatrix was a small part of the first half as they'd duel together, otherwise, The Lie I Lived is the only thing that comes to mind for me as well.

 

I remember there was a story where Harry was in some kind of underground dueling action and the place got raided by Aurors from whatever nation it was held at and so he bailed.

I wish I could remember the name of this fic but does that ring any bells?

Interested if anyone else knows this.

Not really many I can think of off the top of my head in regards to duelling. But if your fine with just straight up well written fights, try the Stranger Trilogy(unfinished) and Shezza's Denarian series.

My own story in the WBA - One Small Duel Can Change The World - is going to feature alot of dueling and fighting. That said, I've only posted 2 chapters and a snippet of chapter 3 in the WBA at the moment. And in my own opinion isn't all that good to begin with.

Hmm. I think Riley Poole if I remember right has a short duelling one-shot in the WBA aswell. And maybe you could check out Johnny Farrar's A Story Of Hallows And Horcruxes.

I'm kind of surprised by the lack of straight up dueling fics out there, I mean, with Flitwick's character confirmed as a dueling champion, I would have expected it to become more popular within HP fic as a whole. Guess not, though.

Edit: for anyone interested, this fic, Vulpem pilum mutat, non mores by Tine An features a bit of dueling, though Harry is just a spectator.

Thatfic would do well in the Almost Recc'd thread. Wouldn't recommend it based on duelling though, at least atm, as it is only 26k words after a year and only got to duelling in the latter half of the most recent chapter.

 

Aside from A Story of Hallows and Horcruxes Johnny Farrar has two other dueling stories worth reading. One is actually titled The Duelist and the other is Tequila.

 

I can't think of any stories that focus solely on dueling, but there are several stories that have great action/dueling scenes:

"Prisoner's Cipher" (which is in WBA) has one of the best dueling/battle scenes I've ever read (and honestly you could read the entire scene without reading the story). I can't remember what chapter it's in but the chapter I'm thinking of is where Harry shows Hermione his memories associated with the battle of Hogwarts. I'm too lazy to find the exact scene someone here could probably link to it.

"When a Veela Cries" by E.C Scrubbs has some great dueling scenes once Harry starts training at Durmstrang. The author really lets you see Harry's training and has really fleshed out the magical theory. All around the story has some really great action scenes.

 

Shezza's Resistance of Azkaban has a Harry whose dueling skills are on the level of Dumbledore and Voldemort.

 

When A Veela Cries doesn't sound familiar, so I'll probably be checking it out later. Thanks for the rec, sirius009. The rest of the fics linked so far I've read and mostly enjoyed.

TheWiseTomato, I kind of wanted to wait and see how the story developed before putting it in even Almost Recommended. And you're right, the dueling wouldn't be the best subplot to recommend the story, but for the purposes of this thread, I thought it made sense.

I think the story got mixed reactions here but I like it! There also is a rewrite (which is actually a new, changed story, called "Fractal") in progress by the same author.
