Which house would you think was Dumbledore in?

Please dont tell me JK or hp-lexicon said he was a Gryffindor. I want to hear why he was in that house. What would the sorting hat have said? And remember, he was 11 years old, when he was sorted, not 150.

HpLexicon/JK Rowling said "Gryffindor" just because she decided to make Gryffindor the 'good' house and Slytherin the 'evil' one in HBP, so she needed all the good guys to come from the 'right' group.

As for Gryffindor... well, the old fart didn't have the guts to kill Voldemort himself before the Prophecy was made. He also lacked the guts to come clean with Harry, and instead deciding to avoid him (his problem) for the entire year (OOTP).

So, he doesn't seem very brave to me.
    He's not rash either.

Thus, I don't see him in Gryffindor. This decision by JKR was probably just so she could show how 'good' and 'light-sided' he is, instead of matching his character.

Ravenclaw. Prior to the conflict with Grindinwald Dumbledore was a researcher and a teacher. He makes plans within plans yet doesn't like the power that he is straddled with. If he was a Slytherin he would have at least become minister of magic or plot to control the world, as some of fandom's evil dumbles do. ip82 already explained why Gryffindor doesn't fit so that leaves the house that puts out the most researchers/ teachers.

I agree, i think he would fit best in ravenclaw. He's definetely extremely smart and intelligent, and doesn't seem the type to run into danger senselessly. He could be slytherin but he didn't have the ambition to become minister of magic when it was offered to him, so fudge took it instead. He might have been gryffindor, he shows a lot of leadership qualities and bravery (heading the OOTP, killing grindalwald) but i think he's suited best in ravenclaw.

Hmm I disagree with Naga's Shadow in most of his points. He could be very well Slytherin. Why? Because he didn't need to become a Minister to control people. He controls them and manipulates them through various means which are not visible to regular eye. It was proven by many people that he is manipulative old coot so in my eyes he could be the best Slytherin.
He could be also Ravenclaw or Hufflepuff.
The guy was a prodigy as Marchbanks says and as we seen he is indeed loyal to his causes and accepts people even if they are death eaters (Snape).
It's surely one of the four . =)

Wow good reasons you have here mate.... It's all clear now, thank you!

About the general idea: In my opinion the Hogwarts houses says almost nothing about the person. I mean look at the people from cannon.
Surely Pettigrew was brave ha? No!
    Malfoy cunning? Big no.

But I stick to my opinion that Dumbledore was in Griffyndor.
He could get sorted to any of the houses.

I think the sorting hat wanted to put Dumbledore in Ravenclaw house, because he has a very "intellectual mind", but perhaps argued with the hat to put him in Gryffindor. He did say to Harry about choices or something, when Harry confessed about his sorting. I can’t really remember what he said but I’m quite positive it’s in The Chamber of Secrets.

I dont think it takes guts to tell a 11/12/13/14 year old that their life is bound by a prophecy. I do believe he showed a great deal of compassion in not telling Harry about the prophecy. I mean it took balls for him to go on the run from the MoM in OotP in order to protect Harry.

And it isnt as simple as just going out and killing Volemort. Voldemort is as intelligent and magically able as Dumbledore in my book.

Gah, you people and your manipulative Dumbledore. I honestly don't see the evidence in canon to back up the theory that he is manipulative at all. If anything he may might be a bit suggestive... Therefore I dub him inappropriate for the Slytherin house. Wow that was easy :). OK, now on to the rest of the houses.

My best bets here are Ravenclaw and Gryffindor. I know many of you will disagree with me on the second one just because you have this strange aversion to canon...

As for Ravenclaw... it is a possibility that can be backed by the fact that he was one of the best students to go through Hogwarts. Academically and practically it also seems courtesy of the comment made by one of Harry's O.W.L proctors. He is also very logical, very smart... blah blah blah. This could also be explained by his old age. With age comes experience as they say, and Dumbledore is indeed old.

For Gryffindor (the one I believe in) we have JKRs backing. That is really all we need, but I'll solidify my theory by providing some other evidence. As for the fact that Dumbledore is so smart... and all Gryffindors are stupid... right? Wrong. Hermione, though I know many of you hate her, also thrives in an academic environment. Besides Dumbledore makes many mistakes that a self-respecting Ravenclaw would never... Sorcerer's Stone anybody? I'll throw around some other things as well since I'm on a roll here. Hmmm, somebody mentioned something about Dumbledore not being reckless. Err... sorry to point this out to you, but Dumbledore does the same thing that Harry does much of the time, he just pulls it off with style. When do you ever see Dumbledore sitting down and writing out a plan of attack before going in? He, like Harry, is a Gryffindor... a man of action! He doesn't take any situation sitting down and is always ready to burst in, wand blazing with spell fire! ... Yeah...

Anyways those are my views... for all I know, Dumbledore was lying and he is really a Hufflepuff like so many of you wish him to be.

I think he was either in Ravenclaw or Slytherin

Both houses price knowledge and Dumbledore has been established as a prodigy that did things with his wand that none had done before :)

If he was a Ravenclaw then does it go well with the fact that the first 70-80
years was he a teacher and a researcher and also he dident want to become Minister because he dident want the power.

If he was a Slytherin so did he spend the years as a teacher and researcher to gain knowledge and to influense people and he dident become Minister because he would rather control things from the shadows.

Hm, well, what Slytherin wouldn't want to be headmaster to more or less every british witch and wizard in his lifetime. The students seem to look at him in slight awe, and some of these children willend up as their societies leader. He's bound to be seen as an authority figure even as the students grow into adults.
But, honestly, I do think Gryffindor. He admits in the fifth book that he cared too deeply for Harry. No Slytherin would do that. Probably no Ravenclaw either, as they are likely to be more analytical and logical. Possibly a Huffelpuff, he seems loyal enough.
No he seems to be brave and all that guff, taking the unknown potion in book 6, galloping off to the ministry in book 5, going on the run to save Harry from being expelled etc in book 5. Yes. Gryffindor.

If you are going to point out that he was sorted when he was 11 and not 150, I'm going to point out that we don't know a thing about 11-year old Dumbledore from Cannon. The youngest we saw him at was 100 years old in one memory from Tom Riddle. And for all JKR's spouting about choices and crap, she does seem to support "evil" Slytherin and "good" Gryffindor in her interviews and the books.

Edit: I take that back. We do seem a 90-something Dumbledore in the Horcrux memories from HBP.

I think he was in Gryffindor, because Gryffindor has three syllables in it and so does Dumbledore.

    No really. That's my reasoning.

I'd say Gryffindor because Dumbledore is, in a way, brave. He has his beliefs and stands in for them, even dying for them. That is quite some bravery.
In HPB, he also seems to bit quite a bit arrogant, making me lean further to Gryffindor.

As for Slytherin, I do not belief the Manipulative!Dumbledore theories. The fact that he can make mistakes also adds to my thinking he was in Gryffindor.

Ravenclaw, well, he may be quite a wizard, but that does not mean he studies much, even though he may value knowledge. His hunting for clues about Tom's horcruxes shows that he is quite intelligent, but when he went for the horcrux with Harry, he didn't really plan anything, did he?

As for Hufflepuff, I guess you could call him loyal, but I haven't really seen that he is hard working. The point that the position as headmaster is a lot of work may come up in many fanfics, but I don't remember any evidence from canon.

I keep thinking Hufflepuff. Don't know why.

He probably was a Gryffindor though. Why? Again, don't know.

I'd say Slytherin, just because of the fact that he allowed Fudge as Minister of Magic. I mean, who better?

Would you rater be the Minister of Magic - sure, its powerful but there's so much paperwork to do. Everything is bureaucratic. As Headmaster he would have influence over all British magical children (not counting the generations he's seen before this), have an easily manipulated, fool in power, who we know went to Dumbledore for advice all the time, before 5th year. Any major law/proposition would probably go to Dumbles before it hit the Wizengamot.

Let's not forget that he is the supreme Mugwump of the Wizengamot. He must carry a lot of clout amongst the Wizengamot members, being the guy who killed Grindelwald and was probably a teacher to most of them. Teachers are generally well respected and Dumbledore is regarded as the greatest Wizard alive.

Therefore, Slytherin. He can operate from the shadows and has a lot of influence over virtually everybody. He had the ex-minister going to him for advice almost constantly and was the Head of the magical Parliament

Where the hell did this come from? Your mind must have been warped by fanon. I was of the impression that Dumbledore didn't want to be Minister of Magic, not that he wanted to control the Minister of Magic. Besides, where the hell is the evidence that Dumbledore is even controlling Fudge at all? The last time I checked, Fudge did just about everything that Dumbledore didn't want him to do.
