I was wondering if there is a well written fic where the Dursleys died (for example in a car accident, whatever) before Voldemort killed the Potters.

Obviously, that means Harry was raised by someone else.

Now, I'm looking only for completed stories.

 

That could work. Wouldn't it be kind of funny, by the way?

Dumbledore (and Lily's sacrifice) protected them against Dark Wizards and yet it took one car accident to kill them.

Imagine the Headmaster's face when he hears the news.

 

What's the point if they are or not if the story is about Harry not living with them? They are a non factor then.

 

It could provide a semi-realistic rationale for why Harry was on his own early on. I'm not entirely sure of the exact circumstances but I could see it working. An example would be that the Dursley's get into a car accident and are put into critical condition in the hospital before dying. Because they don't talk about Harry it never dawns on anyone to go check up on him until after all the chaos has settled down. Harry doesn't know that they've been in a car crash, and only that they haven't come back and this leads to him getting lost or something along those lines.

Granted I'm no writer, but I think something could be made of it. That or something to do with the blood-wards coming leads to something else etc.

 

If Harry wasn't raised by the Dursleys, his personality would be completely different from canon.

For example, if he was raised by Alastor Moody, you can expect just what kind of person Harry would grow up to be.

 

It'd be more interesting if they got killed by a disease or something, and Harry survived because he's a wizard, and boffins try to figure out why he survived.

 

What disease are you thinking of? Because even if they contracted smallpox somehow, it only killed something like 30-50% of people back when it was still around. Even if they got Ebola Zaire, it doesn't kill everyone that gets it. Plus it's beyond unlikely for one of those to show up.
