Use Console Commands to set them to essential, its what I had to do. I would never be able to use a single companion without it because even a glancing shot from Lightning Storm is enough to atomize most of the companions I've run across. Shadowmere is the only thing that can actually take a hit or two from that and keep going.

 

To reliably use companions, you pretty much have to use Smithing. Seeing as smithing is utterly OP, that's not a bad thing, but on a mage it simply isn't that great.

Therefore, you have to make a choice with mages, because there just aren't enough points. Do you go smithing and get a companion to fight beside you that you can heal, or do you get conjuration and go for a more late game build when you can have two daedra lords running around beside you making Deathlords look like kittens?

Meh, after fighting five Draugr Death Lords at once and only needing one or two potions (because I was trapping their souls at the same time), I don't see the dungeons being very challenging.

 

What difficulty are you on? I can identify with you there. I got into a three way battle between two dragons, a couple of mammoths and the giant who owned them and myself, and hardly lost any health on master. I've since sworn off of smithing and enchanting on later playthroughs - it makes the game far too easy in most cases.

 

Have to agree there; once I maxed out smithing and enchanting my character was just about impossible to kill. I ended up making a point of going places where the Falmer lurking around, since poison was the only thing I hadn't made myself completely immune to.

Apparently, Bethesda's devs were too lazy to fix up some stuff, and this guy fixed it all up by using some simple coding and such. I wish I had a better way to describe it, but unfortunately, I'm too busy playing Skyrim to pay attention to what, precisely he did.
