Would kind of remind me of Ranma. Which would be disturbing, because all I could think of when I first read Ranma was the crackup potential of being a woman whenever a guy looks, and a man whenever his friends look.

    Lulz would ensue.

Ranma is one of the greatest anime/manga ever.

The amount of hours I spent reading Ranma fanfiction is probably in the thousands.

Actually, no. It was above average, but not that special. Typical action/romcom teen fare with a O_O twist to the main character. The story was unnecessarily dragged out over many years.

Oh, hell yeah. The Ranma fanfiction community expanded Ranmaverse way beyond the intent of the author. They were magnificent. I still go back to re-read one or two every now and again.

I actually refuse to try reading/watching Ranma for that very reason. It's far, far too long (if I remember correctly).

I started reading Ranma fanfic only after watching a few scattered eps from god knows what season in '99.

After reading Ranma fanfiction for a while I downloaded all of the fan-translated manga that was unlicensed at the time. It wasn't a chore to read, although I'll quickly admit that my standards were lower at the time. They weren't low enough to deal with DBZ though. That was pure shite. So, that's one indicator of quality for you: 'better than Dragon Ball Z'. Lol.

The main reason I read the Ranma manga was to get a better grasp on some on the fanfic I was reading, and to differentiate between fanon and canon. If it wasn't for the drawcard of the fanfiction community, I most likely never would have bothered with Ranma. It's not that great in and of itself.

To be fair, I did watch Dragon Ball Z. I haven't in a while (simply due to the fact that the series failed post-Frieza in my opinion), but I did enjoy it while I watched it. I was 13ish at the time, though, so my opinion of the series would likely be very different if I watched it again now.

On Ranma, I have maybe a chapter or two hidden in my old room. I may not be willing to attempt to read the series itself due to its size, but I can see what you mean.

Also, if you want to read a good manga, go pick up GantZ. Even if you don't want to read a good comic, you should pick it up anyways. GantZ is just that good.

Heh, I was reading Gantz as soon as the first chapter was scanslated and put up on Toriyama's World. I haven't kept up with it (or any other manga) in years though.

They all tend to piss me off eventually for one reason or another.

Huh...I wonder, why did you stop reading GantZ?

Because I left the internet for over a year. I had an and off access to a slow, low bandwidth connection, but nothing at all where I was living. I'd ferry fanfics on a usb stick to my home computer.

When I came back online, I wasn't addicted to scanslations and fansubs any more. I picked up Gantz again after I'd been back for a while out of interest, and it was alright, but it didn't sustain that initial 'wow factor' it had when I'd read the first chapters way back when.

In the end it's just another manga.

    Yak.
