I think I have to revise Chp 1 for Temptations...I get alot of hits, but most people stop reading after the first chapter.

 

Amerision, sometimes the hits for your first chapter are increased because of the search bots pinging your story. Also, some readers click on the story, which automatically opens up the first chapter, then go to the most recent--and that ups your hit count for the first chapter for absolutely no reason. It might not be your first chapter that's the problem. ^^

Where it says Chapter, in the Ficwad ones, and gives a rather large number, i don't know what that means. The total of the hits for different chapters is larger than this number.

When you click on a multi-chaptered story on FicWad, it takes you to a page where it lists all the chapters and their individual summaries. Maybe the number is to the hits on this page.

...My short chapters.... whatever, anyways, mine hasn't been up for long. I had a huge influx of hits and reviews once I passed 20,000 words. Mine is an Unspeakable!Harry story, I don't know if that's 'in' right now or not, but it seems to be doing fairly well in my opinion. I'm sure that I can expect another flood of hits once I pass the next word-count mark.

I usually judge how the story is doing by the last two chapters and their numboer of hits. Chapters 4 and 5 of Bungle recvd 1657 hits and 1366.
Chapter 15 and 16 of my main story recvd 7515 and 4404 hits. I usually see somewhere between 6000 and 8000 hits per chapter on this one.

What do I make out of it? Darkness is more a mainstream story where perhaps 1-2 percent of readers are motivated enough to leave a review. Bungle gets about the same percentage, however the reviews for Bungle are usually longer and more thoughtful. It would be nice to see a higher reviewing percentage, but I don't want to resort to those cheesy tactics like begging for reviews or the tired "I won't update until I receive x number of reviews." Personally, I write for myself anything else is a bonus.

Have you folks noticed that ff.net has started putting an advertisement the first time you log in and check your stats. Very annoying designed to target the small percentage of people who provide content to the site rather than the masses that are browsing the site.

1-2% is a good average. I don't think anyone gets more than that, other than flamebaiters, hostage takers, pool posters etc...

 

Is it? I never knew what constituted a good percentage. I actually wanted to write Bungle first, but knew that the idea was kind of a niche idea that would appeal to some and drive others away, so I went with the more mainstream idea as my first story to build a bit of a following first. It seemed to work as many of the reviewers for Bungle are already fans of the main story.

Now all I need to do is to write the sellout H/G story to draw the masses to me! **Insert Manical Laughter Here**

Of course you guys would eat me alive, but the sweet rewards of thousands of reviews that say 'UR2cool Up2Dt Sn!' will make up for the loss of dignity.

LOL! Those are pretty damn remarkable numbers on the fic considering its category. I suspect a lot of them aren't actually Firefly fans, but rather nonjon fans and want to read it whether it's Harry Potter or Pokemon. I know a lot of people don't watch Nurato but read the fics.

 

I know it's been three months and necro and all that, but I still really like this thread and I know there's a lot more authors out there. I'm curious how everyone's fics have developed since you last took the measuring stick to them.

My current fic is way longer than I wanted (and still going), but the response has still been way bigger than I expected too.

I just put a story on story alert list actually, heh. It's when I don't think a story is good enouh for the faves and also when I don't particularly like the author's other works/they have a million other fics. That keeps my inbox count down, heh.

I was referring more to the fact that 5 people put a clearly finished one-shot on story alert. I'm pretty sure they're also on author alert, which kinda defeats the purpose. All my one-shots vary between 5 and 21 story alerts. The two with only five each have ten different people.
