I don't mention my reading of fanfiction too often, because none of my friends give too much of a shit. I've mentioned it offhand to two or three of them (often in a sort of self-deprecating way, admittedly), and in context it wasn't even worthy of much of a followup comment from them.

Really, without additional clarification it's quite the boring tidbit of information, especially if you're a known geek like I am. Though there are exceptions - I suppose if your friends thought you were straight, and you admitted that you read James/Sirius Butt-Marauders fanfiction, that might attract some notice.

Hahaha. Well I suppose if the comparison is that Mogli understands animals better than humans just as my friend understands women better than men then its okay. Or maybe not. It's a good comparison though.

    :)

I think you flatter yourself a bit there...

Wait, what? Are you saying he understands women better than he understands men, or that he understands women better than other men understand women? Because I could see the former but not the latter, since living with lesbians =/= living with all types of women, whether those lesbians are really stereotypically butch or not. The dynamic would simply have to be a little bit different, as a natural course of events.

I'm all for people marrying any adult they choose, before someone says I'm against gay marriage or something, but it does make sense that a boy raised by lesbians would need another source outside the home as a role model for how to be an adult male.

    Public here.
Funny thing is the fact that I admit freely to reading lots of fanfics gets a lot of people to say "Me too!"
Most people really don't care though. And many don't even know what fanfiction is, lol.
I got my sister hooked on fanfiction a while ago, though she refuses to read anything other than tv show fics.

    ^ that.

Faustian: Introduce your friend to DLP and have him join IRC.

He'll either become a real man - or hang himself.

Public, I don't feel the need to be ashamed that I'm reading and writing interesting literature.

Though most of the few friends that I have are writers themselves, except they do original fiction >>.

I try to keep it private, but some people know. My father says its and unhealthy obsession and my mother agrees with him...and my brother too. So i'd prefer if they didnt know. The other people that know about it are some of my friends but they ignore the fact that I read fanfiction as much as they can. I didnt tell them. But one of my friends(which incidentally was the one who hooked me up to FF) told the rest of them. They laugh at her(with reason cause she reads slash) so I keep it as quiet as posible.

For me fanfiction is similar to metal music or anime: i do not share it, not because im ashamed but because people are not worthy of it. Does that make sense?

People are not worthy of it... that's the most retarded shit I've seen today. But hey, it's only 9:15 in the morning.

Well it is retarded... but is the only way i convince myself to not be part of the general consensus that what we are doing in one word is well... wrong

I'm not ashamed of the fact that I read fanfiction at all. Sure, I don't go about telling people that I do, but neither do I make any effort to hide it. None of my friends or family have a problem with it and if anyone else does they can go hang themselves.

Er...why do you think fanfiction is "wrong"?

I think that LycanQueen was referring to the 'general consensus', as in that most people seem to think fanfiction is 'wrong'. Which is actually pretty stupid, as it isn't very different from reading regular fiction. Sadly, though, that is a fairly prevalent attitude.

I will not talk to people who admit to reading fanfiction in real life.

    Fucking Losers.

I keep it completely private. I dunno what it is, I've just never come clean with the fact that I read fanfiction. My friends know I read a lot, they just don't know what it is I read.

I have a 'Don't ask, don't tell' policy, primarily because most people I know simply wouldn't understand that there are fics that are better than JKR (not that that is hard), and that it is just like reading a book. Although most people I know don't like Harry Potter anyways.

If it was up to me, however, I would run a weekly HP fanfiction discussion group in my town and proclaim my love to everyone! :p

My policy towards sharing is pretty simple. I give little hints to get them towards getting friends to admit to doing it, but I hide the knowledge that I do such things laboriously. People know I read, and quite a lot too, as I carry around hundreds of pages with text spanning both the front and back, but they never get anything coherent out of me when asking. Psh, I even got a few books made containing all my favorite fanfics, of course, with that fancy e-book thing, such actions are no longer necessary, but I have them.

I don't share because my friends are entirely judgmental. One friend came out of the closet once, and not a single person talked to him for a few weeks. As a result, I ended up hanging out with the guy and corrupting him, because he had nothing to do but read, so I gave him one of those tomes.

He needed the support that only fanfiction can provide. After all, no one supports you more than fellow deviants. Poor guy fell to slash though. Now everyone else talks to him, and I ignore the man.
