So far, I've never really told anyone that I read fanfics. I've always considered it something private, kinda like porn, in a way. My friends know that I'm a Harry Potter fan, but they probably don't realize just how big a fan I am.

The closest I got was when one of my friends just started randomly talking about how she read My Immortal. After a few minutes of bashing it, I almost told her, but then I remembered that she was a huge fan of Ron Weasley.

I tend to keep my interest in fanfiction private simply because I've never found a point to revealing it.

I have a small group of friends who read fanfiction like I do. But I don't tell anyone else. Except that one time when there was an impromptu reading of My Immortal. I think I traumatized a few people.

Nobody out side my family. Reason I am posting:

I was in early for an exam a few days ago the girl next to me(before the exam started) was writing furiously. Glancing at her page, I read "Chapter 5" then a bunch of text. She told me she was writing twilight fanfiction, dubiously I asked "Fanfiction dot net?". After she nodded yes I turned around and walked away.

Joking, chatted with her for a while but lacked the balls to admit I login to a forum called "Dark Lord Potter" every day.

Should've shown her the April Fools day skin from this year--Dark Lord Cullen.

Got drunk with a girl the other night who I knew to be really in to Harry Potter... she randomly started talking about fanfiction, and I told her about this forum and that I write it... first person in real life I've ever told that to. It may have been a huge mistake.

I never hide it, but then only one of my friends reads fanfics and rest of them don't care about it. They probably think it another weird thing I do.

But once I met a girl, friend of my roommate, who also read HP fanfics. And of course my roommate told her that I read them to. First thing she recommended to me? You bet it was some slash - Harry/Snape or maybe Harry/Draco. I told her it's not something I will enjoy reading that was end of this discussion.

She wasn't my type (as in she wasn't smoking hot ;) ), so I didn't feel need to lie about it, just to get her in my bed.

Only three of my friends know that I read/ write fanfiction and only my best friend knows about this site.

I only told the third one, a coworker and one of my best friends a few weeks ago when she mentioned that she was really into Harry Potter a few years ago. I asked if she had ever heard about fanfiction and she said 'yes '.

Pretty neat, because she did read fanfiction and now we are writing something together.

I've been reading fanfiction since I was 12, got into it by meeting a friend that wrote Yu-gi-oh, she was quite crazy about it, had her own site and everything.

I found the Harry Potter ones by going to her older sisters profile who wrote marauder era self inserts, read it but wasn't my cup of tea and looked for Harry centered ones.

I have no idea what I liked back then, but I remember that I had a Independent (heir of blah blah)phase and a Severitus one. Slash is one thing I luckily never fell into, partly because the friend became a gravitation fan, she made me watch the first episodes and I hated it, other reason may be the general suckage of that stuff. These days I'm not a fan of pairings in general, I like adventure and introspective fiction more.

Nobody knows I still read, not even the friend(, she's busy with her cosplay anyway). My parents know I read stuff on the computer but that's it, it helps that I'm only child and I have monopolized both the laptop and PC in the house. If someone would ask if I read I think that I would say the truth, I hang out with cosplayers anyway, so they have no right to laugh with my nerdy hobbies.

Maybe you should spend more time learning. It looks like you need it.

I started reading fan fiction a long time ago, more then 10 years, first anime then HP, so obviously my family knows, some of my friends from high school got into it too. Nobody from college knows though and they never will.

Everyone around me knows that I read fanfiction, I have no problem "admitting" to it whatsoever. My family and friends tolerated my Perry Rhodan craze, which cost hundreds of euros, so Harry Potter or any other fanfiction is no big deal for them.

I actually like to bring the topic up when I'm intoxicated- couldn't care less if people who waste their time away in front of a TV monitor think I'm "weired".
