I generally don't say anything, but I don't hide it if someone sees me and asks about it.

I would pop my eyeballs out and replace them with burning coals before I confess to reading fanfiction.

    Ouch.

Although, I remember seeing a movie once where the hero had his eyes burnt out with burning coals as a kid. It was a pretty awesome movie.

Well, looking at the reactions of my friends, ie them taking the piss, I should probably have kept it private. As for family, well my brother also takes the piss, but the rest don't really care. All in all, maybe keeping it on the quiet could have been beneficial but to be honest it's hardly terrible that they know.

My family and friends know, and they probably think it's a little strange. I've never been too worried as far as hiding what entertainment I enjoy. They know I love the NBA and NFL, the same way I love Fanfiction, and comedic musicals.

It's a hobby, and not one I'm embarrassed or ashamed of.

I just might have convinced a friend of mine to read some fanfiction. We have a bet whether ff could be better than the original book... I need to browse through my favourities and a case of beer is mine.

I'll never admit to reading fanfiction.

If I'm ever caught or someone asks what I'm reading, I say it's a political forum/website. Then I pull up one of the news websites I usually have open and start talking about politics until the person I'm talking to loses interest.

    This.

Although - on the other hand, when I was running IT for my old company, I discovered that virtually every employee under the age of 25 read fanfiction in the office (I was clever, and only read it on my laptop - not the company PCs). Fun fact: the girl who read nothing but Buffy/Spike stories set the record for having the most malware/viruses on a pc.

I'd be more embarrassed if someone found my fanfiction 'stash' than if they found my porn stash.

And I watch some pretty nasty porn.

Your fanfiction must be even nastier.

Hmm, like people said, friends and family generally know I'm a Harry Potter fan, but I don't think anyone knows I read fanfiction.

I don't think it's ever come up in conversation, and I doubt I'll bring it up. Fanfiction is just another of those things I use as escapism. Like movies or video games and such.

I am an open fanfiction reader, most if not all of my friends know that I read it.
My opinion is that it is nothing to be ashamed of.

Most of my friends would think that reading itself was strange, let alone fanfiction. Most of my friends have not read a book since the english class required books in highschool, if that.

Yeah, no. My friends know I'm a Harry Potter/Naruto fan, and that bags me enough ridicule as it is. The subject has never come up before, so I'm fine with keeping it a secret. Sure, I've had a few people stumble upon me reading it, but it's easily explained. I just tell them I'm reading a book online, and they generally lose interest.

That's actually quite hilarious because it's a virtual guarantee that none of them know that anyone else is also reading fanfiction. How many employees under 25 did that company have?

Meh. I've told a lot of my friends and family, made a few recs to people who like the same movies/shows/books I do and now a few of them read it too. Sometimes I get a few recs from them. Nice cycle. Seriously, it's fanfic, not sadism. A few of you need to stop being so fucking melodramatic. I'm looking at you, IdSayWhyNot.

    @ArtemisFei: awesome avatar.

For me, fanfiction is just something I don't bring up with 99% of the people in my life.

In the case of my family... while they read, they just so happen to read terrible stuff. As such, literary discussions of any sort... well, it's just best if I avoid it. I died a little inside when I saw my little sisters getting a book by Stephanie Meyers for Christmas.

In the case of my friends, they simply don't read.

The only exception really, is my elder sister (and best friend), with whom I discuss everything, and does not suffer the affliction of acute terribleness that the rest of my family does. Though, unlike the rest of my hobbies, her reaction/interaction with fan fiction is an amused shaking of her head, a pat on my head, and a quick, "Oh, you and your Harry Potter fan fiction...."

Every now and then she'll read a particularly good one that I recommend to her, though.

I'm not ashamed of the hobby, but talking about fan fiction with those whom do not partake of the hobby... well, it's a little like talking about MMORPGs with non-gamers. They don't get it. They can't contribute to the conversation, and frankly want to get out of said conversation quickly, and everyone involved just comes away from it a little perturbed. So, really, it's best, in my experience, to just...not.

Defiantly private. I referenced it entirely for the lulz the other day, the conversation went something like this.

Him: Damn that's not bad, man. You come up with that?
Me: Nah, I saw it on some random fanfic.
Him: Ha, that's so gay. Now I know why I saw you heading to that club...

We burn the shit out of each other all the time, but this would give everyone I know FAR to much firepower.
