For me, fanfiction is very public because what do 16 year old girls do better than read and write shitty fanfiction. My friends and I talk about it alot and I end up shooting their plot bunnys since I'm surrounded by writers. I can see why lots of people keep it on the DL since my brother is ashamed of me reading it.

 

I'm in the 'I don't care so I'll tell anyone' camp >_>. To be honest though, I come here more for the real life/politics sections and IRC than the fanfics so I've no real reason to hide my browsing.

 

Well, I don't talk about it - but that's more because of me being a private person than anything. My family and a friend who have read FF know, though I don't really consider it a conversation topic.

 

I know someone who is a HP fanfic writer about a year ago and i was going to say i read HP fiction as well until she said something about Harry/Snape, then for some reason i changed the subject.

 

My sister, but that's only because she reads HP fanfiction too. She likes Lightning on the Wave's massive Harry/Draco 7 year fic though. Eww.

And her fiance, but only because he's a huge nerd too and I don't feel weird about him knowing. We don't exactly talk about it, but I've read fanfiction on his computer when visiting them (they live in a different state).

 

Public, everyone knows it's one of my hobbies, aside from reading books. I have nothing to be ashamed about it.

I am widely known among my circle of friends as a Fanfic writer and they treat it like that, a hobby.


Personally, I think friends and families should know about a Fanficwriter's hobby, since it helps the writer become well balanced and not become too obsessed about it.

 

A few of my friends have found out (whilst searching through my internet history for embarassing porn sites) but I usually just point out that DLP takes the awesome idea that is the HP universe and squeezes all the crap stuff out of it.

 

Well I try to keep it private but I do'nt feel like I should be ashamed of reading fanfic, specially awesome works like those posted in here =)

My best friend doesn't know but my girlfriend knows, I had to tell her after she asked me why I was so slow in answering in messenger. My mother also knows but I don't think she actually understands what fanfiction is... she might think I read books online.

Although I have told a friend of mine about the fanfiction world. He has read a few fanfic's that I have recommended to him. But other than that he is not particularly interested in Harry Potter fanfics.

Other than him though nobody else knows. That is so because I do not know anybody who is crazy about Potterverse. And the few people who I know have read the Harry Potter books would consider reading or writing fanfic's a waste of time.

The closest I ever came to actually wanting to tell someone was an English Professor I had a few years back. The guy kept coming out with comments that led me to believe he was an HP fanfic enthusiast. Just little things that only one with the discerning eye would note. In the end I did the smart thing and kept quiet.

That being said, if my hunch was correct, I'd peg him for Harry/rare. My money's on him visiting this site before.

 

Whine incessantly about 16 year old boys. God I hated lunchtime in high school.

Semi-private for me. I have mentioned it to a few people, but it's not important or interesting, and I know no one else who does it apart from my sister. I don't go shouting it out.

 

You could drop him an email now, now that you're no longer in his class. He probably won't remember you anyway, so no harm there.

 

Only my sister knows because she introduced fanfic to me. but recently I found out she fell to the dark side and started writing slash. :/
Other then that I bury it as deep as possible and never bring it up. Also I act like I don't know much about HP when people start talking about it so they don't suspect anything.

 

I keep it fairly private, not because I'm embarrassed, but that it just never seems to come up normally in a conversation. A couple friends know because they read/write Fanfiction, but that's pretty much it.
