I haven't read them all, and this isn't really a plot idea, but it's a significant part of fanfiction that REALLY pisses me off.

People making fun of Voldemort's name (Voldiepants, Moldieshorts, etc.). Whem authors have characters do this, it turns the entire story OOC. They take the whole 'Fear of the name' thing WAY too far. Being afraid of the name is stupid, but being afraid of the wizard is COMMON SENSE. And when they make people mock him and his name, it belittles the entire premise of the series.

One of my favorite fics, Unsung Hero, has moaing Mertle do that, and that just ruins the whole seen.

 

Agreed. The worst is when the author has someone like Ron, who feared the name Voldemort his whole life, calling him Moldyshorts to his face, yes I have seen it written

Something that bothers me is Custom wand especially when it has more than one core. I know brother wands don't fight against each other well, but Jesus, can't someone do something different? Can't Harry just change his wand in a way so that Priori Incantatum won't occur?

I've seen some that have been half a page long! Just conversations between characters and the author! What BULLSHIT!! Honestly, nothing makes me madder.

Thank you! God, that annoys me. I've always felt that a hero is only as strong as his villain, and pointlessly belittling said villain only serves to diminish the hero along with him. That's why I make it a point to treat Voldemort with respect in my stories.

Really it could go in both. AzkabanEscapee!Angsty!Widower!SingleFather!Harry is a pretty bad plot idea....

 

I hate the random coupling of otherwise decent plot ideas. I mean, singlefather!Harry isn't something I've really seen done, and I wouldn't mind seeing it done well.

 

Well, I suppose it would fit in worst Summaries, but I was mostly showing it as a horrible plot idea.

 

Harry being a fucking Gryffindor idiot, running into problems that could have been solved by thinking for a second. Slash is just a bastardization of JK characters, not that they were top-notch in the first place. Ron, I hate Ron, especially when he suddenly becomes Harry's near equal. I have always thought that Harry using a katana was just a stupid idea. Harry going to Japan always irked me.

 

On the other end of that spectrum, I hate it when the authors try and overcompensate by either creating an AU Harry Potter or makign him change his ways. You know what I'm talking about--when Harry thinks to himself, 'Hmm, this hasn't been going so well--time for something new!' and suddenly becomes the epitome of perfection, constantly belittling and laughing at the overexaggerated imperfections of everyone and everything around him.

Such terrible Mary Sue characterizations.

 

This has been pointed out before, I don't remember exactly by whom (Lorelei?, Tinn Tam?) but house placements aren't a measure of IQ/sophistication whatever.

Mordac- I think that lostbeing88 was referring to Britain abolishing slavery a long time before America did. And not having a civil war with it as a partial cause. Judging by Hermione's campaign, etc., house elves are the magical world's version of slaves.
