There's one oft-rec'ced story in which the author delights in a continual angst-fest and within the first few chapters puts Harry in a wheelchair and then throws him off a skyscraper. I gave up after that, but he must have somehow survived, because there were thirty more chapters!

I once read a story where Harry is crippled by voldemort and each time he is on the verge of leaving the hospital wing something stupid put's him back in, he spent about a month inside a dragons egg which gave him a fire breathing ability that he never used.......not even once.
