Even in the real world, hallucinogens can do some pretty interesting stuff to our perception and cognition, and addiction to prescription/street drugs is pretty common.

In the HP universe, school-age children are given access to the ingredients and knowledge to make potions that literally make you happier and smarter and luckier. The potential for abuse seems tremendous.

I recall reading a couple stories that involved finding animagus forms through vision quests.

Have you read any good fics that have explored this concept (i.e. stoner!Harry)?

Huh, there's actually more to this genre than I would have thought at first glance.

Barb's trilogy has a brief potions abuse arc, though it doesn't involve Harry directly. The Fifth Element has a few brief mind-altering moments. The Shoebox Chronicles are Marauder-centric and have Gillyweed!Weed.

 

Flying Without a Broom is still one of my favourite comedy fics, despite it being abandoned half way through.

 

It's not Stoner!Harry so much as Stoner!Hermione, but Arsinoe de Blassenville's The Golden Age features abuse of mind- and mood-altering potions (they're a large part of how Hermione was ultimately able to tolerate Ron). The story is a blistering post-Deathly Hallows deconstruction of canon, one that leaves none of the principals looking very good.

 

I knew I was forgetting something... that fic made me very depressed for a few hours.

 

Read that for the first time a few months ago. Left me feeling wretched for days, thinking about all the ways the characters were twisted and their actions. That was one bleak, but amazing fic. That last chapter...
