Filtered Fanfiction

No more Harry/Draco or Harry/Severus or <insert hated pairing of choice> stories in your search

Please leave your feedback/comments/suggestions/whatever here. I'll be happy to get back to them. Keep in mind this is still a work in progress, and it's a project I'm working on in my spare time, but I'd love to hear what you think about it.

I should mention that I only targeted Gecko and Webkit browsers. If you're using Opera or IE.... A) The site may look a little funny. B) Get a better browser

• Searchable, Community-Driven Tag Cloud (looking for Grey!Harry or want to exclude ReadingTheBooks ?)
• Saveable searches (Links to the search page that fill the fields with whatever you want)
• Actually implementing Genre filtering [Done]
• Full-text search of author names, story names, and story summaries
  • This will be a good test of my query optimization abilities, but mostly it will depend on the quality of MySQL's full text searching capabilities.

 

Not sure about legality issues but awesome work.

 

I thought about that, and while I'm not a lawyer, I'm pretty sure this falls within the following section of their TOS:

I used this thing and... stories appeared. Stories I hadn't heard about, because they'd been hidden behind a mountain of shit. Remove Draco, Snape, Lucius, and Scabior and all of a sudden, stories!

See, THIS is what FFN should have. If they get their panties in a bunch over it, maybe it'll motivate them to do filtering properly. What do they have to lose by making it easier to find stuff that isn't noxious garbage.

Of course, this stuff could be garbage too, but it doesn't have Malfoys, or Snape.

If they'd run their searches like this, and just add a slash tag, with the option to filter out stories with that tag...

This is pretty great.

But when I select a character under Character A Exclude Selected Characters, I'm actually getting only stories with those characters. Even when I exclude them under Character B. I assume Character A should be Include Selected Characters?

 

Uh, no. There's actually a check box in front of the "Exclude selected characters" text. Checking that check box is what will turn your list into the black list. Otherwise it's just a white list of acceptable characters.

However, keep in mind the search engine doesn't care about the order that the characters are listed in, just whether or not its a possible combination from the lists you provide. IE, selecting all characters for Character A and excluding only Severus and Draco in Character B will still get you Draco x Harry and Severus x Draco. If you're familiar set theory and cross products, it might help. If not, just be conservative on your searching.

Do you take donations? I'm sure I'm not the only one who'd be willing to pitch in to keep this site up.

 

While I appreciate the sentiment, I make more than enough at the day job to host it on my own dime for now. Goodness knows that I get enough use out of the site to make it worth my own while to pay for it.
