The problem with excluding Voldemort, is that many stories list those two as the main characters without necessarily being slash. My story is like that.

So, I say an option where you can discard any fic that has the word "slash" in the description.

Minor problem - sometimes people will explicitly say "NO SLASH" or "NOT SLASH". So something that filters out "slash" when it's NOT "not slash" would be good.

On the subject of searching for non-slash stories: Crafting your character searches right will do most of the heavy lifting for now. Full-text searching will help some, but this is definitely where the community-driven tags will shine. Stick around folks. I got plans.

I basically went through and excluded every possible male character that could be included in a slash pairing.

Then I found I forgot some and now it's up to 111. :facepalm

And on a depressing note, excluding all possible male characters (ruling out slash), over 10k words, and over 40 reviews only gives me 3899 stories. Just...wow.

 

Watch out for those Harry/Flitwick fics.

This is a really great site. I got rid of most male characters, and you don't know the relief of finally seeing one page of non-slash.

For some reason I can't exclude more than one character in character boxes A and B, I would guess this is something to do with the fact I am using IE6?

Putting 'Harry P' in A and 'Daphne G, Gabrielle D, Ginny W, Hermione G' actually does, magically, return non-slash stories.

As to the blasphemy, I avoided that thread like the plague. Now I know.

I tried including Harry P. and excluding all other characters (except Harry P.) and nothing happened. Either way when including Harry P. actually.

 

It can definitely be filtered both ways - inclusion vs exclusion - but the inclusion feature is only helpful if I'm actually looking for something in particular. The point of my massive, semi-homophobic overkill exclusion list was to non-specifically look for stories without the possibility of slash.

 

This is an amazing filter. Well done! Is it possible for you to share the source code for the project so someone can figure out how to do it for other fandoms?

 

@ceebee: I put in a temporary fix that allows for pairings with an empty character in all searches for now. I'm in the middle of revamping the character select interface to make it a bit more intuitive, and when that's done it should make your request much easier.

@animekingmike: It's definitely possible. Send me a PM with a username/password of choice, and I'll get you set up with access to the repo. However, among the ideas I have for this site are expanding it to other fandoms (and crossover stories for those fandoms), at least for the fandoms where you'd actually get some use out of the searching (IE, those with >10k stories or so).
