Heyo, a while ago I read a fic about an indy!Harry that was fairly well written.

It follows the standard 'shit goes down in Privet Drive, Harry escapes out to knockturn or a manor etc and then gets better at magic' but it did have some pretty unique devices, the foremost of which was that at one point, Harry kidnaps Augustus Rookwood and using memory charms forces him to help Harry learn magic.

Rookwood is damn sarcastic, and he constantly berates Harry for sucking so hard. In one scene I remember, when Harry first learns memory charms, Rookwood tells him to 'hide' the memories in the worst memories people have. Harry tries the happiest memories, and when Rookwood comes to he says "In the happy memories? Through your ignorance, you've discovered a completely new branch of magic! Amazing!"

    Harrys like "Really?"

Rookwood then cuts him down with "No you idiot, people think back to their happy memories all the time, no-one ever just reminisces about the scary parts. Damn muggleborns, always thinking they can improve on proper wizarding tradition."

The story proceeds in this manner while Harry hides out in Knockturn.

Its fairly standard, but Rookwood is original and points out a lot of the flaws that indy!Harry usually makes, and why they're stupid.

Also, not sure if its the same story, but Harry also gets a book called "Anarchia", i think, which is charmed to have a sort of sentience, and all holders of the book are part of a society. All holders must post essays or confidential reports in a sort of forum-like manner at least once a year, and the more you post the more you can read. He tracks Dumbledore through this by some things only Dumbledore could have found out.

So, it would be greatly appreciated if someone could point out these stories. I'm sorry if I'm being kind of vague, but it was a while ago.

    Happy readings DLP

Yep, definitely that one. Probably has the most badly done Manipulative!Dumbledore I've ever seen, but I do remember liking it despite that.

Taking a look at it now, and thanks Pers, that scene had been bugging me for days.

Also, that was a quick response. Nice encyclopedic memory.

Edit: Sion, you said Dumbledore was badly written? I cannot believe that, he is an excellent parody of manipulative!Dumbledore, as is the entire story of indy!Harry fics. I mean, seriously, this line...

"Albus sometimes felt almost like God; Benevolent but all-powerful, all-knowing but mysterious, always there but never outright available. Just thinking about it gave him a slight erection."

Best parody ever. No way is that straight.

Ah. Well, it had been years since I read it last. My memory was a bit foggy. But yeah, now I can see it's deliberate. >_>
