Riley, could you clarify what you mean in your last paragraph in the IC thread? It may just be my sleep deprived mind, but it seems to be venturing into 'Has anyone really been far even as decided to use even go want to do look more like?' territory.

I admit I am confused about Opportunities. What are they, in regards to BDH dice?

Since it concerns me I'd like some clarification as well please.

    They aren't related.

Big Damn Hero dice are gained when you roll at least 5 higher than the stakes that the GM has set (or rolled). You get one of the highest dice types (D4/D6/D8/etc.) to use later. When you want to use them, you spend a Plot Point and include it after you've already rolled. They're basically a last ditch attempt to save a roll that's gone wrong.

Opportunities are gained when the GM rolls a jinx. They let you step back a complication one dice type (see what I did for The Gorram Law as an example).

To clarify, is Money is Mighty Tempting an Asset I'll gain if I accept his offer?

Also, I'd like a more in depth explanation of opportunities. If I don't have any consequences to step back, do I just hold onto it, or is it just an unneeded opportunity?

No, sorry, it's a complication I gave you for your Jinx. Should have said. Take a PP.

Opportunities— if we were playing face to face, they'd be a one time deal. You'd spend the PP and step back the consequences. Because they're not that clear cut while we're taking turns, I'll say that you can hold onto them until the end of the scene.

Basalisk, I don't think you can try to recover from your new complication till this scene is over, man. I may be wrong, and sorry if I am, but that's what I think enembee was trying to say earlier. Maybe just drop the roll (which actually turns out better, honestly) and say something about trying to assess the damage without actually trying to fix it yet?

And I'll have a post up before the new day. Kinda waiting on Lamora, but I'll throw up a couple lines regardless.

I edited my post again because I realized I never explained what the roll was really for, whoops. That's all I added though, in parantheses.

You rolled a 19 there because you spent a Plot Point to bring in the Distinction Trigger.

You always get to roll your attribute (Mental/Physical/Social) and a skill (Notice/Fight/Know/etc.) as standard. Two of those are always rolled. If you want to include a Distinction, Asset, Signature Asset or Trigger you can roll them, but each extra die you roll does not count towards the total unless you spend a plot point for it.

Is that how that works? I assumed it was a plot point to create the asset (with special rules due to the trigger), and then another to add the dice to the roll.

    EDIT EDIT: Confirmed through rulebook.

You don't have to spend an extra plot point to include the Tracker-created Asset, because relevant Assets are always included once they're created (it costs a plot point to create one, so no point in paying extra after that).

You take the two biggest die rolled. 1 Plot Point to count another towards your result.

Just thought I'd get some clarification, when you roll your Distinction as a d4 you get a Plot Point, but when you do that it's because that Distinction could actually be hurting more than helping?

In the entry I just put up not long ago, I rolled the Veteran Distinction as a d4 in my dice pool because I needed some more Plot Points. Of the Distinctions I had, I thought that one would probably hurt the most in this situation, and that the disadvantage might be that the sheriff saw the fighting move and might suspect a military history or something like that. I just wanted to make sure my reasoning was good. And for that matter, whether I was the one who needed to provide reasoning, or whether that was the GM's job.

If you're just creating the asset, you don't need to roll at all. Otherwise I'm going to need clarification with precisely what you wanted to achieve with that roll.

    That's precisely it.

I've been lenient with this so far while we all get used to the rules, but I'm going to start asking you guys to be specific in future. The mechanics should inform the narrative and vice versa.

For instance, in your case you might have added the D4 for the Veteran of the Unification War and described that despite your intent to slur your words, you put that practised military clip into it, or that you realised despite your attempt to look drunk, your bearing was a little too prepared for violence, or whatever.

Aek did it well earlier when he described that Jo's lawful background made her feel uncomfortable with all these clandestine dealings.

This is also pertinent to rolls. Hopefully, you guys should be describing what you're doing in a way that could infer which dice you've used from the text. Not only does this make my job much easier, but it makes it nicer to read and will make you think more carefully about what you're writing.

I was trying to set a "Quarry asset" on the thief. Didn't realize I didn't need to role. Sorry about that. Do we just ignore the roll itself?

All right, I'll try to keep that in mind.

I'm going to let Riley post before I start typing up another entry.
