Inspired by Palindrome's comment in the how you find DLP thread about being traumatized at 13 by being subjected to library review.

What was first fanfic you ever wrote? Mine thankfully was never published: 30k words of self-insert pokemon fanfiction starring my brother and I. I started with a Bulbasaur and found a chikorita on route 1, and we ran into Misty and Brock (separately) in the Viridian Forrest where they helped us train and we caught twin pidgeotto.

I think 'An Alternate Path' while not my 'first' it was my first proper one.

Funnily enough I was in the process of doing a write-up of my old fics and a bunch of stuff about them. Here's the bit I did for AAP covering; Summary, TL;DR, Future plans, Problems with the story and the 'ideal remake'

    (2005) Naruto: An Alternate Path

    SUMMARY

A single action as you stare death in the face can have adverse effects. Instead of hate, Naruto grew up with the fear of Konoha. Now watch as he backed by the ninja population of Konoha leads his life ultimately to his final goal.

    TL;DR

My first attempt at proper fanfiction. There was something before this Harry Potter related, but it was just… bad. It was barely a few thousand words long and involved something about Harry Potter astral stalking Voldemort via their scar connection during a meeting.

The funny thing about this story was that I had never actually gotten first hand exposure to Naruto when I began to write it. Everything I knew had been from fanfiction.

The premise of the story was simple; Naruto couldn’t use proper jutsu because his coils were incorrectly formed due to Kyuubi. Specifically, they were too thick. Due to this conundrum, the Hokage sends Naruto to live and train with the Hyuuga for a few years during the academy and he picks up some bullshit set of pure chakra control skills.

Another key point was that I had switched around Hanabi and Neji’s family positions so that Neji was Hinata’s younger brother, and Hanabi was the cousin. Hanabi was the main ‘pairing’ that was slowly developed over the course of the series, though there were minor ones alongside it, like Hinata’s one sided crush and Tenten’s… something or other.

During the mission that replaced the ‘Wave Arc’, Naruto’s team got ambushed and he was taken prisoner by Orochimaru and subsequently experimented on due to his regeneration that allowed Orochimaru to do things to him that others wouldn’t have survived.

One prominent feature that Orochimaru ‘gifted’ Naruto was a special eye that slowed down his perception of the world and also allowed Orochimaru to control Naruto’s actions.

Oh, and apparently Naruto was on Kabuto’s team for a small while? Fuck if I remember that but it happened.

    FUTURE

I had no real concrete plans for this story from the get go, that much is obvious in both the progression of the story. That isn’t to say that one did not develop. By the time I had stopped writing the story I had an inkling of where I was taking the story.

Anyone with a passing recollection may recall that I had introduced the ‘Absolute Terror Field’ concept from Evangelion during either the surgery, or the chuunin exam.

I had intended to borrow other concepts from Evangelion as the story went on, specifically relating the bijuu to the angels.

I remember a scene that I had intended to write vividly, where Pain used the Gedō Mazō to create an expanding field that dissolved humans into chakra, similar to Second Impact. With each bijuu collected and added the statues power would have gotten stronger, until only Kyuubi remained.

In the culmination of it all, everyone except pain and Naruto would have been dissolved and fuelling Pain for the final confrontation with Naruto and Kyuubi for a climactic battle that ended with Pain pulling a mindfuck on Naruto like Evangelion’s last episode.

Through either conviction of will, or help from the fallen, Naruto would have been able to pull himself through it, return to the real world and kill Pain, absorbing the remaining 8 bijuu, the whole of humanity and becoming, for a brief moment, a god with the capability to reshape the world however he wanted, able to do anything, or be anything he chose.

The only thing her would have been unable to do, was bring everyone back.

There were two ways that I would have taken the story.

The first, Naruto sacrifices himself and the bijuu to bring the dead back to life and restore the world without chakra. Everyone suddenly finds themselves alive again, but without chakra. Then final chapter would have been from Hanabi’s pov. Life would slowly come to terms with the loss of chakra, no one aware of what had transpired beyond their ‘dissolving’. I’d have probably chucked in a reappearance of an amnesiac Naruto at the end to give a bit of ‘hope’.

I consider that to be the ‘good’ ending.

The ‘true’ ending would have been Naruto continuing on, alone, watching as over the eons life began to reappear, and then watching over the second rise of humanity.

    PROBLEMS

    Oh god, where to begin.

I definitely consider this story to be my ‘teething’ stage as far as writing goes. It was my first attempt and for the longest time, it was the most I’d written and committed to for a single story.

The first issue, and one that lingered long after, was my reason for starting the story. It was definitely a ‘wouldn’t it be cool is’ type of thing. I knew that I wanted to write a story, I knew what I wanted it to be based around, but that isn’t enough to go on, because you eventually end up with abominations like Chapter 7 & 8.

There was no real cohesive plot, just things that happened. Though, in the end I suppose that’s all that stories are, someone writing about ‘things that happened’. That’s fine for most people, but for a truly good story there needs to be a reason for ‘things to happen’. This story didn’t have one.

I started it because of ‘wouldn’t it be cool if Naruto couldn’t use jutsu and had to rely on pure chakra’ and it continued because ‘huh, I like how Naruto and Hanabi interact with each other’. It ended because I lost interest in continuing a story that was in all honesty, going nowhere fast.

Content wise, I consider me pulling a random jutsu system out of my ass to be bad form along with a multitude of other things I did along the way, most of which I can’t remember, either because of the time that has passed, or because of mental blocks.

    REMAKE

At this point if I redid the story there would certainly be a lot that I cut out, certainly most of the extraneous things.

I’d keep what I considered the core elements of the story.

    1. Naruto being unable to use jutsu and thus relying on pure chakra manipulation taught by the Hyuuga.
    2. Naruto’s relationship with Hanabi, alongside her jealousy of another more sociable girl trying to get closer to Naruto and dealing with Hinata’s crush on him.
    3. Orochimaru experimenting on Naruto and the consequences/fallout of that.

With the Naruto manga completed and all the pieces available, I was quite amused in retrospect with how ‘close’ I got the ending with this one. Certainly the details were entirely different, but the theme was pretty damn spot on. ‘Pain turns everyone into chakra to power himself’ vs ‘Madara uses the Shinju to make everyone into pod-people.’

With the remake I’d certainly centre it more on the relationship with Hanabi and use that as the tipping point as the trigger to push Naruto forward. I’m a bit leery with turning Hanabi into a ‘damsel in distress’ in a certain sense. I’d probably make it ‘the entire village’ just to avoid the association there, since reducing her character into ‘something Naruto fights for’ is a bit of a shame, especially when it can be avoided by turning it into the ‘whole village… and Hanabi!’

I’d want to keep some of the ‘Evangelion aspects’ regarding the Akatsuki, but at the same time, they aren’t really needed when you consider the canon material. I suppose that was part of the charm back then, being able to come up with stuff like that. These days the adventure is laid out from start to finish and I can’t really see myself writing for the sake of ‘telling an adventure’.

I think that shows in most of my writing. I write relationships—not specifically romance, but at the same more often than not.

Harry/Narcissa/Bellatrix smut on FicWad with the premise of it being a special treat for his birthday. AU obviously. :p

It was the first and only story I've ever published online. Probably ~1200 words of shit tier writing that has since been removed forever more.

Some horrendously shitty Inuyasha story with a gary-stu protagonist wielding, like, seven magical swords. Terrible the first time I wrote it, it got steadily worse because AFF kept signing me out and losing my post.

I don't even remember what name I wrote it under, but it's theoretically still there somewhere.

Actually, come to think of it the one I mentioned in that other post wasn't the first fanfic I ever wrote.

I found an ancient notebook sequestered away in a forgotten corner of my bookshelf not too long ago - in it, in felt tip pen, were my very first attempts at writing ever. From when I was nine. (Or possibly seven or eight) I didn't even know what fanfiction *was*.

The inside cover read 'Thank you mummy for giving me this book'. Not kidding.

The very first story was about a little girl who discovers she's a fairy or something. The second story was about a little girl and a haunted house, and everyone dies in a horrific fashion.

But the third story was a piece of fanfiction about a little girl who is the sister to the boy who lived, and her life in the cupboard of Number 4, Privet Drive.

That's right - I wrote a shitty girl-who-lived mary sue OC AU before I even knew that fanfiction was an actual thing. When I was nine. And the sad thing is, it might honestly still be better than some of the shit on fanfiction.net...

~5000 words Inuyasha fanfiction, back then in German. That was before I learned to put space after punctuation marks when typing.

An unfinished Star Trek story, taking place just after the First Contact movie, so probably written when I was 17. Picks up with the Enterprise returning Worf to DS9, then I had some vague notion of a psycho religious prophet causin' trouble. Never got past chapter 1, thankfully. And I've never attempted fanfic outside HP or Dresden since.

Unfortunately, the notebook is in another county right now - I'll try and make sure to pick it up when I next see it again for you though. And then I'll necro this thread back from the dead. ;)

I was writing a lot of 'original' stories when I was in high school to pass the time during classes. However, my first fanfiction is still on my ffnet profile I believe. It was in french, and was an introspective fic of Harry realizing that he's not a pawn but a king or something like that.

    God, it is atrocious.

I guess technically speaking my first fanfic was more of a James Bond screenplay that I wrote when I was in like the third or fourth grade. I didn't even realize I was writing it in a screenplay format I just sort of saw an example of writing that in a book that was like that and copied the style. I also had no clue what fanfiction was at the time.

My first fic that was in the style of a story came about because I was really bored one summer and anxiously awaiting the release of the Goblet of Fire. I think that's what also led me into fanfiction in general because I was searching for spoilers or something.

Prophecies, Secrets and Lies, which I originally planned as the first of a five story AU covering pre-Hogwarts to the end of third year, but somehow became the first of a (planned) seven story series just covering first year. It's still the only fic I've written that's made it into For Review, despite being mostly awful. Long since consigned to the Trash.

Wow, first fanfiction? I was ten, just after seeing The Empire Stikes Back, and it was first-person from the POV of Luke's and Leia's son, the subject of Yoda's "There is another" comment at the time. Said protag could wield white-colored light sabers with each hand and shoot blaster bolts out of his eyes. Needless to say, Darth Vader didn't stand much chance in their inevitable showdown.

My son's, for what it's worth, is an HP SI of a kid sorted into Ravenclaw with his best friend Tiptoe and an owl named Hoot. Tipetoe's pet is a rat named Speedy. He wrote it eight years ago, when he was six, and was very proud of keeping his text between the margins.

My first proper fanfic is my DC fic, Not So Blessed, quickly followed by it's expansion, A Blessed Lifetime.

However, many, many years before that, my first steps into the world of fanfiction had taken place

There are three candidates for my first ever piece of fanfiction writing. I honestly do not remember which one came first.

Almost 9 years ago I was part of a forum (IA2, a Star Wars modding forum) with limited membership. We few, we band of brothers over there on the site were good friends. Mostly. There were maybe 10 of us altogether. Some of that group were into writing, and they cajoled the rest of us into trying our hand at it.

I think my fascination with fanfiction began there. I was first introduced to the idea of exploring possibilities in more detail than just a stray thought was a viable thing to do. What I wrote for that forum were two things.

    a) An OC protagonist story about Manuke Shokum, a survivor Hapan Jedi Master who survived the purge and has been waging a small war on the Empire on the Outer Rim with his small armada and the help of his son, Zenn. (I still use the names Manuke and Zenn Shokum occasionally to this day in videogame characters, etc).

    b) The other thing I wrote in that forum was the story of Jasper Pearl, NSA agent, and the Men In Black That Are Following Him. I don't remember much beyond that.

At some indeterminable point in the past, I also began writing Naruto fanfiction. My first Naruto fic must have been around that same time (9, maybe 10 years ago) and in it Minato had survived, Naruto and Sasuke were friends along with Hinata and the three of them ended up in the same genin cell. Naruto and Hinata were, of course, together (complete with cringe lemon attempt). The three genin manage to keep Zabuza at bay with their combination moves and escape with their lives, unassisted. Naruto can use his massive chakra supply to form a chakra mech around himself like a blue Susanoo.
Also, Naruto and Minato are part of a clan and have a hitherto unknown eye bloodline limit, Bullshit-gan (I don't remember what I actually called it).

I wrote two more Naruto fics after that, one which was a crossover with Assassin's Creed and one in which Naruto has a bunch of 'masks' that he removes as soon as he beats and returns Sasuke to the Leaf, only for the villagers to turn on him for beating up their precious Uchiha. Danzo and the council -gasp- banish Naruto for his actions! Anger! Injustice! Vengeance!

I don't remember which of them (SW OC, Original thing, or Naruto thing) came first. If I had to guess, I'd say the Naruto one came first, if only because I vividly recall writing it in my Windows 95 computer one summer and being proud of it.

    Fun times.

My first is still up on ffn as a reminder how shitty of a writer I used to be.

    https://www.fanfiction.net/s/5469784/1/Harry-Potter-and-the-Unexpected-Changes

For a long time, it was actually the only story I managed to finish (though the sequel is unfinished). The sad part is, that that story is getting close to 1.5 million views, and I still get people leaving reviews on it saying how awesome it is and how much they want a sequel. The story is an unrepentant piece of trash that exemplifies everything that is wrong with the fandom.

The first fanfic I wrote was back in early 2006. It was called "The Life of Nicolae Edward Volante" and was about a half-vampire Russian wizard who was related to the Black family and became Voldemort's second in command.

Pretty much a Gary Stu SI fic. I can't find it anywhere, unfortunately - not online or any of my old hard drives. I wish I could just to see how awful the writing was. I'm pretty sure it had like 300 word chapters.

The second fic I wrote was much better but still really quite awful. It was called Mysteries of the Department and was about an AU Ravenclaw Unspeakable Harry who was part of a project to create a magical weapon of mass destruction, around which there was a mysterious plot involving members of the project getting murdered. The fic was going to end with the thing exploding and Harry being transported back in time for some HP/Rowena Ravenclaw action.

I think I still actually have that one lying around somewhere.

Third fic was Turncoat, which is readily Googleable.

It was a story about Harry becoming immortal and being trained at a secret school hidden under the ocean in a giant bubble. I was a terrible human being.
