This is still going to get cancelled by pretty much anyone who supports trans rights with any sort of integrity, as lack of involvement doesn't detract from her income for the licensing. I expect a large part of streamers will be reluctant to play this game publicly for fear of losing fans, because at the rate JK is going, she will have alienated anyone with an ounce of LGBT+ sympathy by the time this is released.

 

This is Harry Potter people will buy it anyway. People(Mob) on the twitter are a very loud minority. I talked to several individuals and they don’t care about what JK said. I’m not in the US though.

JKR isn't running around saying trans people are subhuman or anything, despite how a good portion of social media has reacted. That said, there's a reason she's being labelled as a 'TERF' or whatever. You're right though, this isn't the place to discuss it.

 

If anything, that's putting it lightly... I was momentarily excited about this, until I saw that Avalanche has solely been making Disney movie spinoff games for the last 15 years. I was blissfully unaware that the Cars movies or Toy Story 3 even had accompanying video games. Throw a big studio reorganization and a tight timeline in there as well, and my expectations are near nonexistant.

 

The OG Potterheads are now in their 20s and 30s. The hype for solid news of a Wizarding World RPG would be through the roof. Now, I don't frequent gaming news subreddits/websites much anymore (because gaming news outside YouTubers has been shit for years) but I'm certain something would get through the filter. I see nobody talking about it outside thin speculation.

A nobody-studio, no trailer, nothing substantial from WB... If this is released, I'd rather expect some $40 B-game at best rather than something in the AAA category.

The studio "feels anxious" because of JKR's Twitter. Lmao, what gives them the impression that the majority of gamers give a shit about woke Twitter outside of enjoying the trashfires? Topkek

 

Toy Story 3's video games was actually allright. All the Toy Story games were pretty good. I dont have much in the way of expectations (I dont really think a goood HP gave is even really possible), but there are a competent enough developer and WB Games generally deliver pretty high quality titles, often starting with average studios. Consider what kind of crap IO and Rocksteady were working on prior to their WB connections. Batman games, Shadow of Mordor series, and Mad Max are three slick, well made IP derivative games. I would think the HP title would match them (I hated the Mordor games tho)

 

Even if they weren't, because they suspected the demand market wouldn't care, they would have to act like this was the absolute height of their concern. I can't tell you how many tweets I've seen from fucking ice cream companies that say 'dismantling white supremacy is why we exist as a company'. They're doing this because other companies are doing it; if social media existed in the eighteenth century, you would see the same kind of thing about defeating the devil, or witches.
Re: Avalanche Studios, they made the Just Cause series, which I have really enjoyed playing; I think I have over a hundred hours logged in the second game; the third wasn't my favorite. I haven't played any of their other games, but I would be 100% willing to give this one a chance.

 

How they handle the Story and RPG elements are my greatest concern. My expectations for this are expecting something similar to perhaps Greedfall or Mass Effect Andromeda. (Aka low)

I know that sometimes amazing games come from unlikely studios, but previous games are an indication of their strengths and weaknesses. Just Cause is the furthest thing from my mind when I imagine a Potterverse RPG.

But really, we've given this news more attention than it deserves.

 

The is some confusion in the thread: Avalanche Studios and Avalanche Software are different companies.

This game isnt by Studios ( the Just Cause guys) but by Software (the Toy Stpry and Disney Infinite guys).

 

As far as concerns over the studio that's making the game, I'm going to let this breathe and wait and see. Everyone is so dramatic these days. Past performance isn't always a reliable indicator of future performance. Rocksteady, another WB studio, is a pretty good example of this. They had only made one average game before making Arkham Asylum. This could be a similar situation. Breathing life into a passion project can bring the best out of anyone, however if Harry Potter can't do it, it may be time to go into administration. Let's be real, making video game tie ins to Disney movies sounds awful.

 

I mean, making video game tie-ins for Disney sounds great if you’re a random ass studio in Utah. Probably pretty lucrative, and their most recent Disney game got solid reviews.

This game could be complete shit or it could be great. We don’t know enough info to really tell at this point. Also, the head of Avalanche is very much not ‘woke’- frankly, some of the things he’s said about BLM coupled with JKR does make me a little worried but we’ll see.

 

Oi! I‘ll have you know the first Cars game was actually pretty good. I have fond childhood memories of winning many a Piston Cup on PS2. The open-world map was really cool as well.

As for the HP game… I‘ll cross that bridge when I come to it. Still undecided on whether to order a PS5 until Black Friday season 2021 at the earliest.

 

Put it like this: only a minority of the population even know about JK's comments. A decent chunk of those who do agree with her and thus won't care, and an even larger percentage don't agree but also don't care. Then I'd say the majority of the people who both don't agree with her comments, and are vocally opposed to them, will still have their decision to buy or not buy based mostly on other factors, because lets be honest, everyone is pretty much a hypocrite. So that leaves what, 0.1% of the population who will have their minds made up by JK's twitter comments.

PS5 Showcase just showed a trailer for Hogwarts: Legacy, which is looking like the HP RPG that was promised. Tagline is "live the unwritten".

Graphics don‘t look mindblowing, but the art style is really pretty IMO. (Also not a launch title, being slated for 2021, but that suits me just fine.)
