Anyone know of a reliable one? I'm looking for one that will just encrypt a folder instead of every individual file within it. I currently have AxCrypt which seems to work fine, but it does each file individually instead of just the containing folder.

    Truecrypt. [link]

You won't be able to encrypt a folder, but you can create a file containing new encrypted partition.

It also allows you to encrypt physical drives, including system drive.

Make a zip folder, put a password on it, and then rename the file type to something like .mp3.

    Just as effective...

I was under impression that he wanted to be able to access and work on files inside the encrypted folder, encrypted archive won't help with that.

Yeah sorry for not clarifying, but I want to continue to be able to access the files inside the folder and use them frequently.

I am kind of confused about how to do this, forgive my computer ignorance. I follow the directions and get a file that has 1gb to put things into. However, I am unable to put other files into it. How do I either make it to a folder type file or work with the type of file it creates. It's just a generic file.

After you create a TrueCrypt Partition you need to mount it. Use Beginner's Tutorial: [link]

    Really, Truecrypt is a godsend.

The one thing I am unsure about, is if there is any discernible benefit to using the most ludicrously complex algorithms that they have.

I first heard of TrueCrypt on 4chan. If you ever get caught by the police because you're a terrorist or something and there are evidences on your harddrive, they won't be able to get it (especially if it's well crypted) and you have every right not to divulge your password. That's what I understood.

If you want to hide your porn collection from your parents or sister then there's no point in using the most complex algorithm.

In aspect of brute-forcing - no, absolutely no difference. But you have to remember that encryption algorithms can be broken, so if you're using only one you might be unlucky. Risk of two or three being broken simultaneously is next to none, though. On the other hand, unless you are a terrorist, or a CP archivist, the speed toll is too big price to pay for using combos.

Also, another cool ability that truecrypt has, is that you can create a drive that appears to have random crap but in reality has whatever you want it to.

So say you have a flash drive (4GB). Well a small amount of space is used to make it look like the drive is full with stuff like random photos or whatever you want (not entirely sure if you select files or if the program has preset ones, I think you select them). These files then "cover" all your encrypted data. There is no way for someone to tell if you actually have anything that is encrypted. They only see the files which are there and appear to have filled the available space.

This is awesome for places like airports where they might try and confiscate your stuff.
