At first I thought it was a bad translation, but then I saw the Japanese characters next to it and decided that it might just be legit...

One of those is not like the others. The top left animal is some kind of large rat.

I mean. Was it a crime back then? That was the whole issue wasn’t it.

Also the modern German nation has only existed for 30 years. So the first could be argued as true as well.

My wife's family (German) get pissy when I say my country is about 7 times older than theirs.

Well, that is simply not true, the modern German state was founded after the second world war, the eastern German states joined an existing sovereign nation. The modern United States do not start with the admittance of Hawaii to the union.

One can make a good argument, that the modern German nation goes only back to the unification of Germany in 1871, but even bevor that there was a concept and institutions of a German nation, but I would not call those modern.

    Remember, it's 2021 now; 30 years ago was 1991.

The reunification if Germany is not the start of the Modern german republic, the eastern German states joined the BRD.

Oh I just enjoy being dickish to them since they think history is the be all and end all of culture.

But in reunification Germany increased in size dramatically, shifted capitals, increased in population.

I think you either pick 1991 or 1945 as the start. The argument for 1871 is flimsy.

The BRD was founded in 1949. The argument for 1991 does not stand up to scrutiny, I would argue.

Also there is a good case to be made for 1871, many if our laws and institutions date back to 1871.
There is a difference between a state and a nation. The modern German state goes back to 1949, the German nation is a wholly different concept, which is much harder to pin down. But in praxis it dates back to at least 1871, but there are good Arguments for much earlier dates.

The french are in there fifth republic by now, and nobody would argue that the french statehood and nation sprang into being in 1958.

As I understand it, a lot of it was. Apparently a ton of Nazi war criminals that have been put on trial in Germany over the past decades have been both charged and convicted under the Third Reich's legal code, meaning that a good chunk of what the Nazis were doing was illegal by their own laws. In a way, it's a little funny how lazy they actually were about the legalities once Hitler was in power.
