At first I thought this was a joke, but it apparently isn't. What the hell.

    This seems excessive.

Sometimes I post that sort of thing because it seems like life itself is a joke. It's just where my sense of humor is right now.

Couldn't the university have told them to get hammer & chisel and get the rock out themselves? Would save money on heavy equipment, be a nice afternoon activity and feel more cathartic imo.

Let's just say that sometimes Dane County (in which Madison lies) isn't very reasonable.

The question is why they thought they needed catharsis in the first place. It sounds like this rock was referred to with a racist descriptor exactly once by a non-official source, almost a century ago. Nothing offensive was carved into it, it never served as a meeting place for racist organizations, it was never made into a monument or memorial for some old Confederate General, it wasn't named after a notorious racist.

Basically people got mad at an inanimate object for what a long-dead reporter called it once long before they were born. In my opinion it would be less ridiculous to demand that watermelon be banned in the U.S. because of the racial stereotypes surrounding it than to do this.

Also, I have to admit it makes me extremely curious to know just what they actually did with the rock after they removed it. That thing might actually be worth money if they ship it to one of a few Great Plains states that don't have many rocks. I live in one of those states right now, and people here pay surprising amounts of money on imported rocks and boulders to decorate their property.

It cost them almost $50,000 to move it, by the way.

EDIT: They didn't destroy the rock because it was estimated to be over 2 billion years old. Maybe they removed it just to keep it safe from protestors who would have harmed it.

Not going to lie, but I've been considering getting a replica of Leia's lightsaber. Damn thing is beautiful.

It really is. I think the only character sabers I like more are the curved ones (dooku, ahsoka, ventress), Mace Windu's pimpsaber, and Cal Kestis' weird fork saber.

The main reason I'll occasionally watch a tennis match.
