Aw, really, that bad? Didn't realize there was that much of a markup buying in UK, though I'd still say that those 3 Alienware PC's you linked are probably not worth it. As for what you should go for, I couldn't really say :(

You could try Novatech.uk. They're known for being a reliable brand and the prices seem reasonable for the UK.

Is there any reason it has to be a laptop?

I'm an international student in my third year, so the possibility that I might be heading home after 2014 is pretty likely. Having a laptop instead of a desktop computer would make moving preparations so much easier, plus I like having a laptop to play games on no matter where I am.

Welp, just chatted to one of the Alienware! used laptop boys, coming down to the flat in half an hour to show me his and make a decision.

This thing is the most gorgeous piece of hardware I've ever seen. :O

Ah, so you bought it then? Which one did you go with?

Alienware M17x. Really nice laptop, lad lied about the battery (only half the length he claimed), but otherwise in top shape with no problems. Not fond of Windows 8, but what can you do? Cost me 570 pounds.

Battery life is entirely dependent on what you're doing and the power plan you're using, so he may have only stretched the truth a bit.

He told me it was three hours normally, half that with gaming. I checked, and its 1.5 hours with powersaver. So that's some stretching.

I'm happy with Windows 8.1, so you should try updating. Or just install windows 7, you might be able to get it for free from your school.

The biggest difference between W7 and W8 is the metro UI replacing the start menu. Install StartIsBack or another equivalent and you can get rid of Metro and W8 will be awesome.

Glad to help. I know that was my main issue with W8 too, but now it's rare that I even see the metro UI. :)
