I think the ideal Lux (or any ap burst champion really) build is to get 20% scaling cdr runes (all glyphs and 1 quint), the 5% cdr mastery that raises the limit to 45% cdr, thunderlords decree (or movement speed depending on your preference) and a morello.

45% cdr is straight broken on some champs, I really like it on Diana right now (with a nashors tooth instead of morello) and I think Annie has a 100% uptime on Tibbers with it.

It's not that hard to conserve mana with an extra dorans ring or blue buff, and the extra slot from not having Athenes is so worth it. Athenes is kind of shitty right now where it just doesn't give you enough damage to get it instead of Morello. I'd only buy it if their team is mostly AP and you can stomp your lane with the extra MR.

That is the biggest problem with all of these Lux players running out of mana. E should only be used to push when you are trying to hit an opponent as well. Q should be use pretty sparingly (not much before 6, and after 6 only when you have a good chance of actually hitting it and want to use your ult on them/kill).

Using ult to farm is probably the biggest waste as a Lux player. The short cd on Lux ult is probably the single greatest advantage Lux has in lane. Even if she can't instant burst someone from 100-0, the fact that she doesn't have to bother saving her ult and just using it (alongside Q) on the opponent to poke is ridiculously strong.

Do that, and while it's makes the laning a bit more restrictive, will help you actually WIN the lane, rather than having a safe farmer. Not rushing a Seekers against a Zed/Talon is really just asking for them to kill you, mana regen or not.

Using ult to farm is fine most of the time. Like obviously don't spam it on minion waves when just standing in lane. But if you wanna push out before backing or clear a wave when they're pushing against you.

I prefer having the extra mana regen from an athenes. It actually gives me much more lane pressure. I can push people in, force them to miss farm. I can harass much more freeely, I don't need to wait until the E is guaranteed. I can throw Q out pretty speculatively. It gives less burst obviously but you aren't gonna be solo killing anyone without a second item anyway, without them making a big mistake.

Imo having Morello make me play more passive, not less. It makes you basically have to wait for them to make a mistake and give you an easy Q or have a jungler gank.

You're right that it's fine to use ult on minion wave. Nothing bad will really happen to you if you do that. I disagree with it because it gives up a really strong lane pressure tool for something that could be accomplish with an E and several autos.

Landing Lux E is basically the easiest thing in the world (throw when they cs, etc), so it's not really a guarantee or not thing. The trick is to poke and hit minions at the same time in order to control the waves. Honestly, as long as like 75% of your E's hit, your opponent will run out of hp far faster than you running out of mana.

Don't get me wrong though. I'm not saying Athene's is a bad item on Lux. In fact, it's great specifically for the reasons you mentioned. Just that, it's hardly a "must get" item. And especially in cases where you are facing AD Assassins, getting blue buffs, need grevious wounds for some reason, want more ap, or anything else, there are many other options that work just as well.

So, should I be going for a complete item before starting in on a second or can it work to mix and match the various recipe ingredients to emphasise certain buffs (such as mana regen using both the Forbidden Idol and Chalice of Harmony)? An alternative would be to go for the Forbidden Idol and the Needlessly Large Rod, which would give me a decent mix of AP and Mana Regen for 1800g (as well as 10% CDR) and the option of taking Rabadon's Deathcap early in the match for those times when you just need to put someone down.

EDIT: Also, would the Ardent Censer be a good item for Support Lux?

As a general rule major items are much more cost efficient than their components are. So it will usually be better to just complete your items. There are exceptions, for example, if you want some cheap armour you can buy just a seeker's armguard then buy another item rather than completing the full Zhonya's Hourglass. Also sometimes you will go back to base without enough money to complete the item you want so you may want to buy a component of another item so you still get a power boost when you go back to lane.

If you play support Lux, you are by default tilting your adc and probably losing.

I'm probably going to have to quit league. Going from 90-100 ping to 30 ping and then returning to 60-80 is just too tragic.

Support Lux isn't that bad. Like there are plenty of worse things you can do. Plenty of better things too, but there are much worse things. And everything tilts you, Luckylee, I don't think you can blame it on the Lux XD.

It's been my experience that way too. Playing a non-traditional support is very likely to tilt your ADC, and many people who are playing a non-traditional support (upon seeing their ADC is not doing well) decide they should start taking CS because they are 'also a carry and can use it better'.

I haven't seen a support take an adc's farm like that in about 2 years. And if you get tilted simply by someone on your team picking something strange then the problem is with you, not them.

Are we allowed to tilt after they give two kills before 4 mins, or waste all their mana after three moves and force us out of lane by essentially 1v2 without the xp advantage?

Yeah but regular supports do that just as often as unusual ones do.

Lux does not offer the necessary utility for support champions, no sustain, runs out of resources very quickly, is nearly useless without a bunch of expensive items, and she doesn't have mobility either.

It's like all the worst aspects of several support champions condense themselves in one champion.

Yes, other champions can potentially be in the same situation. Lux is much more likely to be than not, though.

Hard CC on 1/2 people, one of the best shields in the game and a slow. That's more utility than some supports have. I see her as fulfulling a similar role to support Karma, but more pick orientated. She is definitely not useless without items, she is level dependent though. And most supports don't have any mobility.

I'm gonna guess you've never played with or as a good Lux as support. I'm not arguing it's the best pick but it definitely has some merit.

When I go support Lux, besides the support item, I actually just go my usual AP path. Getting support items like Ardent Censor will actually make you useless.

Support Lux's poke is actually pretty strong though. I generally run mana regen seals and it's more than enough. Hit either their ADC with about 3 E's and autos at level 1, save up mana at level 2, hit them with another 3-4 E's at level 3 and they will be low health and low on pots.

But yeah, I definitely agree it's not as strong as the "meta" supports, but it's usable and enough to win lane with.

Winning in spite of something speaks to your skill, not the wisdom of the decision. Someone could make fiddlesticks support work or [insert champion name here] support work, but that doesn't mean it's not a terrible choice. It just means that he's making the game much harder than it has to be for no particular reason.

No, I've never played with a good support Lux. Played with plenty support Lux though.

Lol, Fiddle support was legit meta for most of season 3 XD. People always say stuff like that before new support picks become meta, see Annie, Morganan, Nautilus. I'm not saying Lux support will become meta but you're being over dismissive.
