I am trying to improve my German, and I'd hope to make it more enjoyable by reading good fics.

The most important factor is good grammar and spelling since the point is to progress... I'd also preferred to read short fics or OS first since my German is still horrible and my brain hurt if I read for too long.

So if some of the more German-speaking folks here have any recommendations I'd be happy to hear it.

    Thank you.

Lol. Uh. While I'm certain that the spelling and grammar is very decent, YMMV. I've got two writing studies there that were the first things I ever wrote, a fluffy H/G Oneshot, and the token H/G Canon-redo that was never going to get finished. Feel free to read, just be aware of what you're getting into >_>

I asked World, Mini, Sesc et al a while ago and I was told there's nothing.

    Nothing! :(

At least none that I know of - not having cared for German fanfiction ... ever, actually. In all the years that I have read fanfiction, I think I have read one German one.

And I actually remeber the author:

Beware though, there's lots of slash to be found there - you'll probably be more successful with the regular FFN search.

Actually, there is a large German site called Fanfitkion.de, organised like fanfiction.net.

Though - if you want to read to improve your German, do it like I did with English: Start reading real (childrens) books. That's why I started reading Harry Potter.

    I suggest Cornelia Funke, Tintenherz

Or Michael Ende: Momo, oder Die Unendliche Geschichte, though his language often is more complex

Oz, I didn't say there was nothing, I said there was nothing good. That's a difference :p

Thinking about it though, actually, there was one story I remember from my very first days in FF. I dropped it, because it was H/Hr, but if that doesn't bother @OP, I think it's quite readable: Loons' "Harry Potter und die Goldene Festung" (Harry Potter and the Golden Fortress). Not exactly short, but the best I can offer -- and, what's probably more important, the first half is translated into English, so you can switch back and forth.

Well thank you all for your recommendations.

I read Sces's Ein Abend am See from, found it too heavy with description to be enjoyable, meaning I had to check too often a dictionary...

I will try the others later.

@Dark Minion: I did the same to improve my English and it worked quite well. I am actually trying to read Bilbo the Hobbit in German, but at this pace I will not be finished before the film is out.

Pixie Bücher sound awesome, sadly I don't know it I want to read it badly enough to pay for it.

Textehexe has some oneshots, though there is a lot of (implied) Remus/Sirius; I enjoy her works, but many here would probably disagree.

I'm also seconding Dark Minion's recs (Tintenherz, Momo).

For other original German books, you could try Walter Moers, although that might
not be the best place to begin with depending on your language skills.

Well, yes. That's one of the pieces where I experimented with stylistic things; and it's indeed purely description. If it makes you feel any better: the vocabulary you'll need is definitely more advanced than your standard every-day words >_>

Also, I tried finding a few ebook-children's books, and came up blank :/ I fukken have them in my closet, but online? Nada :|
