Yeah, I know, this is somewhat vague, but I'll be honest; I haven't seen a good, long fic in a long time. I don't know why, but I seem to have a weird affliction, where shit stuff keeps being thrown at me.

Perhaps some of you might have some good ideas?

    Please help. Please.

I usually trust you, but some of these placements are baffling. RC belongs in good, whereas Prince of the Dark Kingdom quite clearly passed into the YMMV category about 10 chapters ago.

Also Joe's Hero Trilogy is Indy so it's the second category depending on how well you deal with things that were the norm in 2006 when I'm pretty sure it was written.

Lastly, Timelands also by Joe is over 300k (I think), Wastelands of Time and Heartlands of Time are the stories, in that order.

Obviously I've read Joe's work. What do you take me for?

    Don't answer that.

    The Death Gate Trilogy
It's one of the first long fics I've ever read, and it's still one of the best. I've paraded it around here a few times to raise awareness of the fic, as the author isn't a DLPer, but it's a great story. At nearly a million words total, it should occupy a few days of your time.

There is also the R trilogy by Greengecko. Probably the only Severitus fic worth taking a look at (not saying much) it has some pretty awesome ideas. It's still a WIP, and is probably over a million words total. I haven't been keeping up with it, but I have heard that the most recent chapters in the third story are pretty lame, but IDK. The pairings change, but for a long time it is Harry/Tonks

On The Wings of a Phoenix is also another of my favorites. I've probably read it at least five times over the years.

All these stories have been talked about at one point of another on DLP, but they are not what I consider well known, so that is why I listed them. They are not for everyone, as I'm sure some of them will hit some pet peeves or cross personal preference boundaries, but as with a lot of stories, you will not know if you like them unless you give them a good try

Do you know of any long-lengthed fic's that have Harry with a lesser known secondary character, even if said character is a cliche like the 'Ice Queen' or a well-used one, such as Fleur?

Oh and of course this is another time to extol the virtues of The Phoenix and the Serpent, a fic so good I showed it to my grandparents (they're more "hip" than my parents) and they both loved it.

When people in their sixties who aren't terrifyingly weird like fanfiction, it's high praise.

How has no one made a penis joke about the title? I don't know whether to be proud of DLP or disappointed in myself.

I got through the first 10 or so chapters of this. The nature of the conflict was really intriguing, but Harry was such a bitch I had to stop reading. Does he ever stop being a pussy?

It's probably my favorite story of all time, but I wouldn't rate it more than a 3/5. There are a lot of things I would change about the story, and if I remember correctly, it really starts to pick up after chapter 12, but I could just be pulling a random number out of the sky since it's been awhile since I last read it. The thing with Harry is that his conflict is as much of a physical one as it is a mental one, and he cannot conquer one without conquering the other, and since he is torn up between what he should do, most of the time he just does nothing and just takes what's coming without caring. He does change though as his views of the world change and he slowly shifts to one side of the conflict.

I liked the beginning a lot. I wound up being put off though when Harry reached school. He's just too passive for me. Plus the characterization of Hermione in particular absolutely killed it for me. She felt entirely too stuck-up/arrogant etc. Plus the spontaneous Ron/Hermione.

I guess its just a personal peeve of mine. It takes a really well written fic to make me keep reading if it has Ron/Hermione in it.

But hey, to each their own.

Jbern has that really long Harry/Susan fic. It's pretty old, and a lot of the classic Jbern stupidity shows up in places, but it's still decent. You might have read it already though. http://www.fanfiction.net/s/2686464/1/To_Fight_The_Coming_Darkness

Is that story really any good? Its thread pretty much only has praise from 2005-2007. I've tried to read a couple of times, but the dialogue in the first chapter is just so goddamn stupid (and none of the characters feel like real people). I guess what I'm trying to ask is if it gets better than that later on in the story.

There's Regulus' R-series. I enjoyed it the first time I read it ages ago, but haven't read it recently.

My only problem with it is that his planning seems to take into account it being a 21-parter, and I don't know if he'll ever finish it. Luckily, he's split it into three seven parts - one covering Hogwarts years (R1), one covering Harry and his partners' child/ren through Hogwarts (R2, and I haven't read any of it), and some odd over piece, that he's only written the prologue of (I think that he calls it either S or W series, and there is a reason behind it, but I can't remember). But yeah, R1.1-7 are worth a read. And do stand alone, by themselves.

Louis IX has two longish, and completed, pieces. Mastermind Hunting I loved the first time I read it, but couldn't finish a second time. Strengthening Wounds was mrehish, but re-readable.

Doghead Thirteen is interesting. I LOVE his main work, but it is a crossover with EVERYTHING (Sailor Moon, Warhammer 40k, Harry Potter, Dune, Star Wars, Discworld, his love of bikes and guns, original universe stuff, and then countless cameos that I don't catch as I know nothing). And more adult than not. And the series is unfinished, but the first two pieces are done. If you read Naruto or Ranma, he also has some of those set in the same 'verse. Out of interest, would I need to be familiar with those settings to read those fics, or would I be fine?

It does. The first couple chapters are definitely the weakest part of that one.

Yeah, it's a good story overall, but there are some parts where you will ask yourself "How could he have possibly thought that was a good idea..." The summary also says 'grittier' which, in true Jbern style, is mostly contrived, shallow descriptions and characterizations, with a sprinkling of actual gloom and doom story telling.

Renegade Cause is definitely very good.

Try the Human Condition by C.K. Talons. It has aged very well and is just a special story, though not without its flaws. It [Ifeels[/I] special when you read it, and I haven't forgotten anything about it since reading it in 2008ish.

To Fight the Coming Darkness has fallen out of readability. Back then, readers mostly engaged themselves in stories; now, he stories have to do all the work.

Knowledge is Power is a 1/5 story, not even close to 3/5. The guy can barely write with zero semblance of style, to say nothing about the retarded shit that comprises 100% of that bloated piece of trash. A good writer wouldn't even include one goddamn idea and little plot bunny Fettucini used. Every single fucking thing there is so fucking retarded, the fact he stopped writing it proves that there's a benevolent fanfiction god.
