Slash, Harry/Ginny and a huge amount of shit fanfiction disproves that.

Yeah, but he unfortunately already wrote 300,000 words.

Seconding this recommendation. This story remains my favourite piece of writing in the fandom, ever.

It does have something special about it, that's for damn sure.

Strong YMMV on that one, believe me. Or Silens, if you prefer. It started out well, but it's unbelievably bad by the end of the series. I don't know whether the sequel series improved things.

Although sadly abandoned (presumably, not having been touched since 2007), The Sound of Sorcery is one of my favourite ever fics. The writing style is probably a bit Marmite, but I'd say it's well worth a read.

The Sword and the Sorcerer was shaping up to be damn good as well. It hasn't been updated for a while (the author was planning on writing a whole year of the story, then updating it over a couple of days; I assume that's still the case), but check it out.

Oh, I back the Sound of Sorcery. It's one of my favourite H/G pieces, even though (or probably rather, because) the pairing is barely there. And I loved the style when I read it.

If you're looking for romance stuff and don't mind some clichés, there's also Lord Dwar's Summer of Change (Harry/Tonks). I still look at it fondly :)

I'd suggest The Other Boy Who Lived by Kwan Li. I certainly enjoy it. I believe it is almost finished too, although there have been about ten updates since I read it last.

Agreed; parts of it still make me cringe, but I do like (re)reading it. :)

The part where Harry snaps, "Look, Uncle - no wand!" when he shatters his leg? Or when he calmy says, "Goodbye, Uncle. Avada - " and Tonks stops him?

    Good stuff.

That fanfic is amazing but it's abandoned.

Let's be honest, it's really not.

OP, I'd second Sitra Ahra. Amazing fic. Also, if you haven't read T3t's Thunderstorm, it's very much worth a read. It's a shame you asked for specifically lengthy fics, I'd have a lot more recs for short fics.

Yeah, it's just that I find myself finishing the shorter fics quite hastily, and have nothing to occupy myself with then...

Thunderstorm is good, but I couldn't get into Sitra Ahra when I tried to read it ages ago, but who knows now...

On the other hand though, anything that is actually blindingly good, even if it's shorter, I wouldn't mind knowing about. :D

Also, try Fisico's stuff, which is a rather AU sixth/seventh year piece. I did find myself wondering what was going on in the character's heads a few times (Harry acts like too much of a dick sometimes, as does whatsherface), but I enjoyed it.

Well, the best two oneshots I remember reading are Across the Universe by mira mirth, and Redemption by silentclock. And while I'm talking about oneshots, you might as well check out mine. Shameful to self-plug, I know, but whatever.

A longer and interesting fic is Causality Chain. It's not great, but I thought it was a fun read, and it's worth a try.

The truth. It has been spoken. I gave my own opinion in the post before Silens, and it wasn't quite as thorough, but I still stand by it. Avoid this series.

I really can't think of anything myself (unless, by some cruel twist of fate you haven't read Stranger in an Unholy Land, in which case get there yesterday), but I'm rather keen on finding a new few gems myself, so I'll watch this thread with great interest.

I disagree about Renegade Cause being a very good story. I think it feels more like a Michael Bay edited story where random plot twists, overblown drama, weird character decisions, omniscient characters aren't always noticed because of permanent tension, cliffhangers and hard boiled characters. The story has no pacing, characters don't really plan their moves. All just happens when it's needed for maximum effect for the next plot twist.

Nevertheless, it can be an entertaining story like Bay can occasionally release an entertaining film if you don't think too much.

Well, I wont lie, I've already read the series, and, while not the best piece of work I've seen, it's still decent.

I reckon I could liken it to a pack of cigarettes - you can smoke them after a few months, if you're really desperate, but it would be better to just go out and buy a new one.

Just finished reading this over the past few days... and its damned good. I can't believe I haven't read it before as a matter of fact, its in the Library after all and I thought I'd scoured through it fairly well...

The only thing I don't like about it is the extreme amount of angst. I mean holy fuck, that fic really takes it to a new level. Still... 5/5 from me.

I strongly agree with this recommendation. One of the best Dragon Age fics out there.
