There have been two hints to wards Calypso knowing legilimancy that I have seen. Kira saying Calypso was worthless without her little trick, and her knowing that Harry was lying about where he learned to duel.

Both are circumstantial and hold little water. She probably can use legilimency, but without a wand she can only tell when someone is lying to her or pick up thoughts when someones emotions are running on high, like in a duel.

As to Harry being suspicious, yea he should be a little. I doubt he would put much thought to it until he speaks with Calypso about it since that is what he did with her research into his family.

I wonder if she does use it in duels, if Harry knowing occlumancy will allow him to beat her. If that does happen it would be an important piece of Calypso's character; how she responds to loosing in a duel with her friend vs a rival like Kira.

I'm interested in what memories Snape will see as he trains Harry in legilimency. Shit would hit the fan fast if Snape saw the memory of harry practicing dark magic on Calypso.

I'm pretty sure Harry's spell chain and the fact that Quirell, possesed by Voldemort, tutored him on it has already raised Snape's suspicions. I'm curious as to why he's keeping not giving the information to Albus or Tom.

Because Snape wouldn't give information away without reason.

I'm not going to quote anything specific, because I've seen many posts about this. But I want to say that I think you all are confusing just being a kid for being Book Dumb. Harry is a 12 year old kid, who left his school that his family has gone to forever because he didn't have any friends. He's going to want his friendship with Calypso to work to an extent that most of us wouldn't be able to relate to. He will look the other way on a lot of counts, trying to make up excuses for her. Most of us would be understandably wierded out over somebody making a chart on our family, and so was Harry, but he's willing to give Calypso the benefit of the doubt, not because he is book dumb, but because he is a lonely kid.

And on the subject of gambling, maybe its because Las Vegas is a constant ficture in American culture, or maybe because all Americans are prudes, but I've rarely encountered people who look favorably on gambling. I remember when I was 9 or so and god enthralled with black jack, my dad cleaned me out before making me promise never to gamble again. And up here in Maine, there have been multiple attempts to pass a vote to allow a Casino to set up shop, and on both attempts I see multiple T.V. interviews of old-timers telling us how they've seen their friends' and family's lives gambled away, and that a Casino is the Devil's home. So maybe Lily isn't being too original in her confrontation with Harry, but I would be even more surprised if she didn't bring the fear of God to Harry over gambling.

Also, on the note of Harry fessing up to easily to Lily over gambling the second time, I can say from experience, sometimes you just want to come clean / feel there is no way you can get away with it, if you've been raised by a competent disciplinarian, even when you are a preteen.

It's my (limited) experience, that yeah, it's pretty different.

When I was in England (at 20 years old) I remember being introduced to a friends parents and them asking me to call them by their first names. It freaked me the hell out.

Likewise most parents over there seemed a lot more comfortable with the fact that their kids were having sex and had been drinking underage before turning 18, neither of which flew at all over here.

I thought it was more where I was from in the States though, rather than it being a US thing. The South (& Bible Belt) can be rather stricter about that sort of stuff than other parts of the US.

    Wow, that is pretty strict.

In Australia its not uncommon for kids to smoke, drink, or have sex as young as 14 with parental knowledge. And its not really that big of a deal.

I also still reflexively call people sir and ma'am if they appear to be more than 10 years older than me.

And heaven forbid that you don't call EVERYONE that when you're under 16 or so.

This around here. You could be 25 and still be doing it. I'm having trouble addressing a former teacher by his first name.

Yeah, I'm 26 and I can't address any adults I knew in my youth by their first names without cringing. Only new acquaintances can I manage it with, and even then half the time I end up not calling them anything because I can't decide if I should call them Frank or Mr. Frank, etc.

Even when I was 7 at a friends house I would call his parents Nora and Greg, It never occurred to me to call them anything else. Just different cultures I guess.

Just reread the update and this memory just stood out to me.

    Calypso actually said
Was this an intentional statment about how memories fade overtime, or a mistake?

On a side note I really hope that Harry beats Grindelwald's record this year. Not because I care about how Harry compares to him. But because I dont want to read a redemption plot line where Harry missed it last year but his pride demands he gets it in his third year. It was a good filler plot line to use once, recycling it would get boring fast.

I'll second that. I'm hoping third year will finally kick in some action and some more involvement with Hogwarts beyond letters from his brother explaining canon events. The third year can't mirror canon if Sirius has been free and clear this whole time.

I think Harry should just tie with Grindelwald in this year. This way it doesn't make him seem like an uber-powerful super-wizard, it brings it back down to a more realistic basis (at least as far as fiction goes). This is just in my opinion.

tbh, i'd think it would be easier to score high in more subjects earlier rather than later in your academic career. If he's going to beat it now would be the time.

I think it would be cool if everyone took it for what it was, and realized that either way, it marks Harry as a very talented wizard and it's a literary device to foreshadow the parallels between Harry and Grindelwald as well as linking them closer in the minds of other characters, and that's about it. It's not like breaking the record means Santi has gone off the goddamn deep end with Uber!Harry, nor does not breaking the record mean that it will inevitably become the crux of the rest of the story...

Will he, won't he? It was a good plot device to show off some magic as well as 'guide' the year, but I imagine that by the time we get to the TWT, it will have as much an impact on the storyline as Percy Weasley's dozen OWLs. It'll just be part of an already fairly impressive portfolio marking Harry as a powerful wizard with an aptitude for study.

As for third year... my money's on it actually being a quiet year at Hogwarts, with the shit hitting the fan at Durmstrang. Whatever bombshell Calypso is preparing to drop, and whatever it entails.

That would be cool. And I can see Lily being happy that nothing happened to Nathan this year, only to discover that this time it was Harry who was in big troubles.
