I disagree with LT. I like how the chapter started and really liked all the stuff with Blaise, my favorite character in the story. I hate how ginny acts. But i love how Ron is characterized, it is different, refreshing, and doesn't follow the cliches. Ron not falling head over heals in love with hermoine is also nice.

 

I'm pretty sure the proper term for that is 'being wrong.'

 

This story is decent, although the author abandoned it. He finds out he has a sister, blady blah blah stuff. Blaise shows him some back bone...which is what I like.

There are a few things about this story that make it unique, for me. Rather than being a by the numbers fanfic (1. Harry gets MAD POWERZ 2. Harry falls in luuuuurve 3. Harry kills everything that walks), there are some things here I haven't seen before

First, the way Jon is using romance (w.r.t. Harry) is fairly ironic... in most stories, shipping is used as something that makes Harry happy/completes him/power he knows not/whatever... here, all of Harry's relationships have ended up making him miserable (and have driven him steadily darker).

The focus on shipping really misses the point, though. The thrust of the plot right now is Harry's fight against his darker impulses (which he's losing). I tend to think of his partners as sort of a metaphor for his struggle -- at the beginning, when he was still fairly light, he was with Fleur [who is lightness personified]. He got darker and darker until Fleur couldn't handle him anymore, and the last few chapters he's been "with" a vampire [even if he doesn't admit it]. He's about to get a shitload darker, and his presumed romantic interest [for the moment] is possessed by a DEMON. You get the picture.

Focusing on who he's with at any given moment misses the forest for the trees. (Jon's not exactly an emo kid. I predict that Harry will eventually end up with the right girl) Anyway...

I've seen a lot of complaints about Ron's role, too. Jon's not setting him up to be the hero, try to think about him in terms of being Harry's foil (you can measure the extent to which Harry's life sucks by comparing it to Ron's. Who is having the Best. Year. EVAR.)

I guess that's about it. Jon had a nasty case of writer's block, which is why the chapter took so long to produce. Hopefully he can crank the next one out in less than a year.

Pretty sensible observations overall, I think. Anyway, like I said, I'm kinda hoping that the romance is just on the way out the door. Harry's descent into darkness is much more interesting to read about than his romantic woes. I do like the idea of his girlfriends being a sort of 'meter' through which to analyze his current level of 'darkness.' Of course, he can't go much lower than a succubus possessing Ginny, unless the author has him hook up with Bellatrix Lestrange or something totally off the wall. As for Ron, I want to agree, but really he's just coming off as being too powerful. A dragon animagus form isn't something that a guy like Ron should have IMO. He is getting way too much of the spotlight, to the extent that he's beginning to overshadow Harry a lot, which is somewhat annoying. Still, I think this is a good fic and will continue reading it. I do very much appreciate the fact that he's toned Mary Sue Malfoy down a lot in these recent updates.

 

Is it just me or does this fic look like its gunna end up as a H/G or some thing along those lines?

 

If by "end up" you mean Harry will "end up" with Ginny when the story's finished, I'd be willing to lay decent odds that it won't happen that way. (Jon keeps the future plot fairly close to the vest, but he's not a fan of that particular ship or of Ginny in general).

It seems reasonably likely to happen in the short term, though.

 

Bah I hope it doesent go to H/G ship at all, I really enjoyed this fic untell the last couple of chapters. I just dont get why Harry doesent just hook up with blaise, so what if she was useing magic. She is hot powerfull and puts out, what more could a teenager want?

 

i had thought harry knew blaise was using vampire magic the whole time when she previously tried to ensnare him...

 

I tried to read this story a long time ago but i couldn't stand the peace of it all. I stopped after a few chapters.

Ya that happend to me for a while, i think there are parts that are just unbearable, like i love Fleur, but in his this story i find her to be a nuisance, and for once i like fem!Blaise better.

When I saw it, thought it was gonna be an Author's note declaring Hiatus. This has got to be the first Harry/Fleur. Loved it and can't wait to read the new chapter.

 

This is an old fic. Its even older than Reign of Power and still going. Return of all the great fics that werent finished.

Thats what I am currently doing.

I am struggling through it just remembering that it was written before Special Power Harry was cliche so badly and Harry is extremely talented just doesnt use it became cliche.

Okay I finished it again. The first couple chapters were hard to read because of what are now cliches but after say chapter 4 or 5 it got much better and easier to get through. Its still one of the better fics out there.
